51st Herald Sun Tour - 2.3Australia, October 18-27, 2002Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 7 - October 23: Mansfield - Bright, 186.3 kmBelgian Bart beats them in BrightBy Rod Morris in Bright Belgium is a country steeped rich in a history of producing top cyclists and today two more came to the front in the VicRoads Herald Sun Tour. Compatriots Bart Heirewegh and Danny In't Ven are also teammates this week, lining up in the bright red colours of the Carlton Midstrength unit. Heirewegh and In't Ven have appeared on the stage podium for three days in a row now and could have further success waiting for them before the 1030 km tour finishes in Geelong on Sunday. Heirewegh won today's longest stage of the tour, a 186.3 km journey from Mansfield to Bright in Victoria's high country and In't Ven showed he is all class by moving into a share of the lead of the East Gippsland Shire King of the Mountain Championship. The Belgian duo were part of a nine rider breakaway group, which signaled their intentions not long after the field left Mansfield. Of the breakaways, none posed a real threat to the leaders in the General Classification, which has Henk Vogels (Bicycle Superstore/Vic State Home Loans) in yellow, 2-seconds ahead of previous leader, Baden Cooke and his Jayco teammate Matt Wilson, who some tour stalwarts are predicting will be holding the winner's jersey come Sunday at 28 seconds behind. The best GC positioned rider in the breakaway was NSW beanpole Phillip Thuaux (FRF Couriers) who started the day in 19th, but a sizeable 12.48 minutes behind Vogels. With that in mind, the peloton was content to let the breakaways have their day in the sun. The lead group stretched the margin to 7 minutes at one stage, but when they crossed line at Bright it had been narrowed to 4 minutes and no real damage had been to the GC challengers. There are still 16 riders within 5 1/2 minutes of Vogels and unless something dramatic happens in the coming days, the winner should be among that group. After some complaints earlier in the tour, the commissaires panel ensured all riders and team managers were updated with race information and when news came through that the peloton had lifted their workrate and were closing the gap at around the 100 km mark, the breakaways put their collective hammer down. Heirewegh again threw out the gauntlet, daring others to go with him - some did, others didn't...or more precisely, couldn't! Italian Simone Mori (Morey & Hurford) was one of the casualties, losing grip on Heirewegh, Canberra's Peter Rogers (Rio Coffee) and New Zealand's Lee Vertongen (Pelaco), who went on to fill the first three placings. Vertongen's Pelaco teammate Scott Guyton struggled to maintain contact, but did hang in there to take fourth place, with Phillip Thuaux (FRF Couriers), In't Ven, Mark Renshaw (Jayco) and Klayten Smith (Coates Shorco Sykes) the next riders across the line. Thuaux's top 10 placing cemented his hold on the Best Australian Based Rider award, but he has now lost almost all cover from teammates with the withdrawal today of David Harrigan through fatigue. With the earlier losses of Brad Mills and Scott Dixon because of injury, the FRF Couriers team is now down to just two - Thuaux and Jonathon Davis. The Pelaco team has almost certainly stitched up the Shimano Sprint Championship with teammates Scott Guyton and Lee Vertongen running one-two. Pelaco won all 15 intermediate sprints on offer today, with Vertongen claiming 8, Guyton, five and teammate Ryan Russell winning the other two. The win for Belgian Heirewegh was the 177th of his career, 26 coming in his days as a professional and his 28th this year. "This win makes up for the disappointment of last year when I scored a second and a third," he said. "I won two stages in the 2000 Tour and this one is just as sweet." Heirewegh said the breakaway group worked well together, except for Italian Mori and Victorian Renshaw. "I don't know why Mori wouldn't work with us, but I can understand Renshaw holding back to protect his teammate Baden Cooke's GC position," he explained. Heirewegh is the current national amateur road champion of his home country and predicted his good form wasn't finished for this week just yet. The tour continues today with a tough 85 km climb from Harrietville to Omeo, a stage which includes three hill climbs and just two intermediate sprints.
