51st Herald Sun Tour - 2.3Australia, October 18-27, 2002Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - October 22: Nagambie - Violet Town, 124.3 kmMacca takes his tenth stageBy Rod Morris in Violet Town Popular Victorian rider David McKenzie etched his name into the history books of the VicRoads Herald Sun Tour today when he claimed his 10th career stage win in the event. McKenzie (28) riding for the Active For Life team this week, is the regular team captain for Australia's national road unit, iTeamnova.com, a young team breaking into the extremely competitive European circuit. McKenzie won the 124 km stage from Nagambie to Violet Town in Victoria's high country and in doing so, strengthened his position in the top 10. McKenzie's 10th career win places him in elite company, as the legendary Barry Waddell is credited with an amazing 45 wins and Belgium great Jan Bogaert scored 25 wins throughout the 1990s. Waddell won an astonishing five successive victories in the Herald Sun Tour from 1964-68, although overall honours eluded Bogaert, who is with this year's tour as team mechanic for Carlton Midstrength. McKenzie first rode in the Herald Sun Tour in 1995 and apart from 1999 and 2000 (when he didn't ride) has won at least one stage every year. "Personally it's very nice to move into double figure wins in this race, as I love the event," McKenzie said. The affable Victorian won in a bunch sprint from Queensland rider, Jonathon Cantwell (VicRoads) and early tour leader, Baden Cooke (Jayco). That trio - along with the main bunch - missed an early break of riders - 11 in total - who spent some 85 km away. The breakaway started to disintegrate after going through Euroa and starting the first of two hill climbs for the day. Lanky Belgian Danny In't Ven (Carlton Midstrength) was part of the original break and he kicked again in the Cat. 3 climb, to score his first points in the East Gippsland Shire King of the Mountain Championship. By now, Trent Wilson (Active For Life) had bridged the gap between peloton and breakaways and along with South African Ryan Cox (Maffra Community Sports Club) and Finland's Kjell Carlstrom (Malaysia Airlines) attempted another brave - but ultimately unsuccessful - break. The bunch had lifted their collective workrate and just two kilometres outside of the destination point - Violet Town - swallowed up the leading quartet. McKenzie was like a hawk, staying close to the wheel of Cooke, admitting "He was the one I had to watch, I wanted to stick with him and then try and outsprint him at the finish. It all worked perfectly." Overnight tour leader Henk Vogels had his fair share of problems early to mid stage, at one point dropping more than 150 metres off the back of the peloton. But Vogels fought his way back and by day's end had scored seventh in the bunch sprint and held onto the leader's jersey. Vogels' lead has been narrowed to just two seconds, with Baden Cooke (Jayco) improving his status after his third in the stage. Cooke's Jayco teammate Matt Wilson, slipped from eight seconds behind in second place to third position and 28 seconds in arrears. There are still 17 riders within 5.34 minutes of the leaders and it is expected the tour winner is in that group.< That group includes seven Australians, who in fact fill seven of the top nine positions. Not since Canberra's Neil Stephens in 1986 has there been an Australian winner of the Herald Sun Tour, however, that looks almost certain to change this Sunday when the tour finishes in Geelong. New Zealand rider Scott Guyton (Pelaco) cemented his hold on the Shimano Sprint Championship. Guyton (26), a dual Kiwi Olympian, won the first four of five intermediate sprints on offer yesterday and now leads by 24 points from Canadian Eric Wohlberg (Ballarat*eureka). Trent Wilson (Active For Life) entered yesterday's stage clinging to a 1-point lead in the East Gippsland Shire King of the Mountain Championship - by day's end that lead had been stretched to 4-points from Baden Cooke. The day was not without drama, with the race commissaire's earning the UCI some petty cash by handing out cash penalties to riders for failing to wear helmets prior to the stage and then issuing 20-second penalties - and cash fines - to Klayten Smith (Coates Shorco Sykes) and Rodney Green (Maffra Community Sports Club) for riding in the slipstream of a vehicle - a similar crime that Vogels committed in Monday's fifth stage. The Jayco and Maffra Community Sports Club teams were also fined $240 AUD for pacing riders, while the Maffra South African unit was hit with a further $240 fine for failing to follow commissaire's orders. There has been much talk throughout the tour entourage over the pacing issue and Chief Commissaire Russell Miller from West Australia has called a team manager's meeting prior to the start of tomorrow's stage. The seventh stage will be the longest of the tour, a 186.3 km trek from Mansfield to Bright, including 15 intermediate sprints and 3 hill climbs (one at Cat. 3 and two at Cat. 4).
