51st Herald Sun Tour - 2.3Australia, October 18-27, 2002Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - October 21: Bendigo - Shepparton, 140.9 kmClarke takes sprint finish; Vogels moves into leadBy Rod Morris in Shepparton Western Australian rider Henk Vogels snatched the prestigious yellow leader's jersey in today's fifth stage of the VicRoads Herald Sun Tour, but not before race commissaires took valuable time bonuses away from him. Vogels was second in the 141 km Bendigo to Shepparton stage and replaced Victorian Baden Cooke as overall leader. But Chief Commissaire Russell Miller and his panel, which includes Alec Dustan, Bill McMahon and Neville Williams, fined Vogels, who is riding for the Bicycle Superstore/Vic State Home Loans team - along with Jan Koerts (FRF Couriers) and Simone Mori (Morey & Hurford) 50 Swiss Francs ($60AUD) and more importantly - imposed a 20 second time penalty. The stage was won by Victorian Hilton Clarke (Ballarat*eureka), after he had scored two minor podium placings over the previous two days. Clarke beat Vogels in a bunch sprint with talented Belgium rider Bart Heirewegh (Carlton Midstrength) flashing home for third. Vogels said of the stage finish, "Second sucks, but moving into yellow is a big consolation." Clarke was third in the Bacchus Marsh and Bendigo kermesses on Saturday and Sunday respectively and yesterday's win was sweet revenge. "I've been hanging out for a win, but really this win is just as much the team's as it is mine," he said. Clarke paid particular praise to Chilean teammate Luis Fernando Sepulveda for his work on the road. The trio of Vogels, Koerts and Mori were penalised for riding in the silpstream of a vehicle, or being pushed from a team vehicle. That arose when Vogels punctured and was in danger of losing contact with the breakaway group. The penalty, however, did not stop Vogels from taking over the much sought-after leader's jersey. Vogels now leads the Herald Sun Tour by eight seconds from Matt Wilson (Jayco) while overnight leader, Baden Cooke (Jayco) is now 12 seconds adrift of Vogels. A slick group of 13 riders made a break early in the stage and at one position were more than three and a half minutes ahead of the peloton. As riders went through Rushworth, some 90 km from the start and 50 km from the finish, the breakaways had been joined by a chasing group of 21 riders - but the familiar yellow top of Baden Cooke and his nearest rival, David McKenzie (Active For Life) were not among them. Once the riders hit the 20 km mark, a further break was made and it was a matter of the strong surviving. Meanwhile back in the peloton, Cooke had been provided with the wrong information thinking that the breakaways were only one minute up the road, he informed team-mates not to bother chasing too hard as no damage would be done to his leader's position. That one minute should have been trebled and when Cooke finally touched home base, he had lost 2 minutes 56 seconds - plus the bonuses that go with the top six riders. Cooke eventually went from first to third, 12 seconds behind Vogels and 4 seconds behind Matt Wilson, who is now looking to record one of his best ever finishes on home soil. One of the day's biggest improvers was Swedish rider Jonas Ljungblad (Malaysia Airlines), moving from 15th position at 4.05 minutes behind to outright fourth and just 1.09 mins behind Vogels. Ljungblad was fifth in the bunch sprint and along the way picked up a further 12 seconds in time bonuses. He is now the leading international rider in the field, which has been reduced from 80 to 74 after the illness withdrawal of Tim Decker (Bicycle Superstore/Vic State Home Loans) and the crash-affected Scott Dixon (FRF Couriers) and Ian McLeod (Maffra Community Sports Store). Dixon and McLeod both came down going through part of Victoria's wine growing district yesterday and the former was transported to Shepparton Hospital with concussion and cuts and bruises to his face and hands. New Zealand dual Olympian Scott Guyton has won over many critics during the last two days' racing, dominating many of the intermediate sprints and he is now the outright leader in the Shimano Sprint Championship, 12 points clear of previous leader, Canadian Eric Wohlberg (Ballarat*eureka). Tomorrow's sixth stage will be a 124.3 km "sprint" from Nagambie to Violet Town and then the following day the 200 strong tour entourage will travel from Mansfield to Bright.
