51st Herald Sun Tour - 2.3Australia, October 18-27, 2002Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - October 20: Bendigo Kermesse, 69 kmCooke continues Australian assaultBy Rod Morris in Bendigo Another Aussie trifecta signalled the very real possibility of a home grown win in Australia's premier road cycling race, the VicRoads Herald Sun Tour. Entering the fourth stage holding the yellow tour leader's jersey, Baden Cooke strengthened his grip by winning the 69 km Criterium held in Bendigo. The 20 second bonus that goes with winning the stage - his second in as many days - means Cooke will take a healthy 1.26 minute lead into today's fifth stage, a 141 km climb from Bendigo to Shepparton. Cooke - riding for the powerful Jayco team - won the stage in a bunch sprint from fellow Aussies, Mark Renshaw (Jayco) and Hilton Clarke (Ballarat*eureka), his second podium finish in successive days. In fact, Australians filled the first five positions, with Henk Vogels (Bicycle SuperStore - Vic State Home Loans) and David McKenzie (Active For Life) the next two across the finish line. Cooke explained the race quite simply, "It was hectic out there and it was really hard to keep tabs on which riders were in the breakaway groups. I'm sure it looked easier than what it was." The stage was held out around a picturesque 2.3 km circuit surrounding Lake Weeroona - but with the field lapping at between 2.58 minutes and 3.19, riders didn't have time to enjoy the scenery. A group of five riders, New Zealander Scott Guyton (Pelaco), American Kevin Monahan (Ballarat*eureka), Queensland's David Betts (Fitzroy Cycles - Australian Abalone Exports), New South Welshman David McPartland (Coates Shorco Sykes) and Kiwi Jaarod Poad (Rio Coffee) made the early break and stayed away from the field for 16 laps, collecting the bulk of the bonus points on offer. At one stage the tough working quintet had opened up a gap of almost 30 seconds and because they posed no real threat to the tour leaders, the peloton didn't appear too concerned. However when things became a little more serious, the GC challengers lifted their workrate. David McKenzie (Active For Life) was being watched closely by Cooke and his fellow Jayco team. Every little challenge was thwarted and the Aussie hero of this year's Tour de France may be headed towards a slice of history. It has been 16 years since an Australian (Neil Stephens, 1986) has won the Herald Sun Tour, but with five Aussies in the top 10 as we near the half way stage of this year's 1029 km race. Added to Cooke's list of awards this week is the fact that he is also leading the Active For Life Criterium Championship, while German rider Eric Wohlberg (Ballarat*eureka) leads the Shimano Sprint Championship. There was no change to the East Gippsland Shire King of the Mountain Championship, with Trent Wilson (Active For Life) clinging to a one point lead over Cooke. The Herald Sun Australian Based Rider Award is being led by NSW beanpole Phillip Thuaux, while New Zealand's Jaarod Poad (Rio Coffee) collected yesterday's Most Aggressive Rider award. The hard luck story of the stage must surely belong to 20-year-old New South Welshman Scott Dixon, riding for the FRF Couriers team. Dixon broke his chain on the start line, but an unbelievably long mechanical change - 17.30 minutes - cost Dixon 6 laps. Eventually he finished 22 minutes down on the winners time and fell from 69th in General Classification to officially last. No doubt he would have had stern words with his mechanical crew last night.
