51st Herald Sun Tour - 2.3Australia, October 18-27, 2002Stage 1 - October 18: Melbourne CBD Criterium, 31.5 kmMcKenzie opens with a winBy Rod Morris in Melbourne With the tag of one of the most prolific stage winners of the Herald Sun Tour, Victorian David McKenzie started this year's race in tremendous fashion. McKenzie (28) won the opening 30-lap criterium, held in Melbourne's Central Business District, holding off fast finishing American Kevin Monahan, who is riding for the Ballarat*eureka team and German criterium specialist Christian Lademann, who this week is representing Latrobe City. McKenzie is the captain of the iTeamnova.com unit, which this week is racing under the banner of Active For Life team and entered the tour's as the defending champion of the Melbourne criterium. "Its always hard as the defender, because the other riders tend to watch you more closely," McKenzie said. With a 20 second bonus for winning the stage and a further 5 seconds bonus coming from the intermediate sprints, McKenzie also claimed the much prized yellow jersey, which signifies the tour leader. "This is a bit of a surprise, as I wasn't really chasing the yellow, but more importantly looking to win the stage," McKenzie said. The iTeamnova.com outfit was developed last year and this week has a full team of five in-form riders. Allan Iacuone, a former winner of the Tour of Tasmania, recovered from a potentially nasty fall yesterday to claim fourth place, while teammates, Jamie Drew, Brett Lancaster and Trent Wilson made their presence felt at times. Drew in particular is being watched closely by his rivals after winning last weekend's Melbourne to Warrnambool Classic. McKenzie said he was surprised that few riders chased him down in the early stages of the race. "Our team's plan was to attack early and see what eventuated," he said. "I was surprised that very few chasers came with me, I think there was only about a dozen or so." "This win is not just down to me, its a credit to everyone associated with the team," he added. "Nearly everyone in the team are volunteers and if we (the riders) don't succeed, the team may not survive and that would be a crying shame for the amount of work they have done." "But a win like this is, brings so much joy to everyone involved and I would like to think may also attract the right type of sponsor that we need," McKenzie explained. On a tough 1050 m circuit, which included an extremely heady wind, the 80 riders were soon strung out over several hundred metres. Despite the wind, the field still managed to average a speed of almost 41 kph for the 30 lap race. Chief Commissaire Russell Miller of Western Australia had no hesitation in withdrawing a bulk of the field when the race hit three laps to go after McKenzie and his breakaway group had lapped the peloton. "If they can't win the race, they shouldn't be on the course," Miller said. All finishing riders admitted the course was tough because of the wind conditions. "It wasn't easy out there, not easy at all," Tasmanian Sean Sullivan (Carlton Midstrength) - the defending Herald Sun Tour Criterium Champion said. One of Australia's Tour de France stars, Baden Cooke (Jayco) claimed opening honours in this year's Criterium Championship. Cooke scored 14 points, including 2 wins, 3 seconds and 2 thirds from the 11 intermediate sprints on offer. Canadian cyclist Eric Wohlberg (Ballarat*eureka) was judged most aggressive rider on the opening day, while 19-year-old Victorian Joel Pearson has taken the early lead in the Best Australian Based Rider award. Another of the associated awards on the opening day was Best Team Worker, won by Lademann (Latrobe City). PhotographyImages by Tom Balks/www.tombalks.com
