Van der Helm cements overall

By Tommy Campbell, Irish Independent, Evening Herald, Sunday Independent

Ester van der Helm, the pre-race favourite for the TQ International Ladies two-day cycling event duly obliged by snuffing out the opposition over two days and three stages. The 21-year-old from Jouda in the Netherlands, a Cultural Science student at the University of Rotterdam, cemented her victory on Saturday when she won the two opening stages, a road race and a time trial. It was evident after the race against the clock that she had no intention of surrendering a title that she won twelve months on her first visit to this country. Yesterday, her colleague, Ingle Klep won the final stage when she clipped off towards the end of a demanding stage in North Co. Dublin thus nullifying any ambitions that Stephanie Gronow from Germany would rob her of victory. The German was her main rival and she will be pleased with her second place overall with Irish team leader Louise Moriarty finishing in third place, thus keeping up the tradition of Irish competitors doing well in the event which is sponsored by TQ Papers in Baldoyle.
