Ventura wins 2002 Tour de Tucson
El Tour de Tucson isn't exactly a race, but you wouldn't know it from the way US Postal's Robbie Ventura sprinted across the line after 108 miles on Sunday to take this year's event ahead of Jame Carney (Prime Alliance). France's Jeannie Longo was first woman across the line by a comfortable margin.
However, unlike the more usual 50 or 100-strong fields Ventura, Carney and Longo are accustomed to lining up in, El Tour de Tucson starts with over three thousand - and that's just for the 108 mile event. Add in the 81, 62 and 35 milers and the total comes to around 5000 riders in the US' biggest 'perimeter ride'.
Organised by the Perimeter Bicycling Association of America, the Tour de Tucson is one of a series of rides dedicated to the maxim that "One learns more by going around than cutting across." Robbie Ventura and 5000 of his closest friends clearly agree!
