50th Ronde van Overijssel - 1.5Nertherlands, May 4, 20022000 Results Results Past winners Lancaster claims victory in the NetherlandsAustralian Brett Lancaster, has claimed his first win for iteamNova.com in the 199km Ronde Van Overijssel in the Netherlands (UCI 1.5). The 22 year old, who has represented Australia on the track in World, Olympic and Commonwealth Games competition, proved too strong on the final uphill sprint crossing the line in 4:46:48 ahead of Arno Wallaard (Domo U23) and Rabobank sprinter Kenny Van Hummel. "I put on my big gear to grind up the uphill finish but at 200 metres to go I got out of the saddle for the sprint and I cramped my legs," he explained after his win. "So I sat back down and just kept my gear going and they couldn't get across." Lancaster admitted he didn't like his chances when he lined up for the Ronde Van Overijssel because he was still feeling the effects of last week's Circuit des Mines in France. "It was a really hard race in France and I didn't really feel good at today's start," said Lancaster. "But as the race went on I felt better." Early in the race a lead group had broken away in the wake of one of numerous crashes caused by the wet conditions but iteamNova.com's Scott Guyton and Trent Wilson helped in the chase to reel them in. Several riders tried to bridge the gap to the lead group which had a five minute advantage with 80 kilometres left. Two riders broke away from the lead group at the fifth Hot Spot but the pressure was now increasing in the peloton. By the time the lead pair rode into the finishing town of Rijssen, with 20 kilometres to go to the finish line, their lead had been whittled down to 25 seconds. They were caught six kilometres later. Lancaster and Rabobank's Koen De Kort broke away with a little more than ten kilometres remaining but eight more riders joined them soon after. As the ten leaders headed toward the finish the rain stopped and the games began. With three Rabobank and two iteamNova.com riders in the lead group of ten, Guyton and Lancaster knew they would have to soften up their rivals if they were to have a chance of victory. Guyton and Rene Obst (Team Berlin) attacked putting the pressure on Rabobank to chase them down. But with one kilometre remaining Rabobank wasn't closing the gap. 500 metres from the line Arno Wallaard (Domo U23) drove hard to reach the lead two with Lancaster right on his wheel. Guyton assessed the situation and put in a final kick to make sure Lancaster had a clear line to the finish. The Victorian didn't disappoint getting past Wallaard and holding off Van Hummel to claim the win. "It was clear Rabobank weren't getting across so I decided to go for it but they (iteamNova.com) did some good work (because) when I caught them his team mate (Guyton) pulled a gap and he (Lancaster) got over me easily," said Wallaard after the race. "Scott had been going all out in his escape, but he still managed to help me in the sprint," said a grateful Lancaster. "This is my first season of focusing on road-racing and I'm still learning every race," he said. "I get a lot of help from my team-mates and of course some good advice from our team manager Sean Yates."
