Another win for Sullivan

By Matthew Conn

Evandale cyclist Sean Sullivan, has scored his second international road race victory in as many weeks, taking out the 1.6 ranked Challenge de Hesbaye in Belgium.

Sullivan rode for more than 90km in the front of the race after joining a group of 7 riders around the halfway point. At 50km to go a group of 25 riders formed at the front and after a series of attacks on the finishing circuit, the Tasmanian Institute of Sport scholarship holder again rode clear in a group of eight.

The small lead group contained riders from both the Rabobank and Domo-Farm Frites development squad, but it was Sullivan, wearing race number one, who broke clear in the final kilometer.

Yesterday's victory followed on from an equally strong display in the Gent - Ieper semi-classic last week for the 24 year old Tasmanian, who is riding with the form of his life, for the Dutch Blokswieler Team.

Speaking from his home on the Dutch/Belgian border, Sullivan said that finally his years of sacrifice were paying off.

"I haven't done anything different this year to previous years, but last week's win gave me the confidence to race at the front all day today."

Sullivan is in his second season of amateur competition in Belgium, following four years of racing in Italy, including a year as a professional with De Nardi in 2000.

While these two victories have kick started Sullivan's campaign for a professional contract, and taken some pressure off, he is now the favourite for this weekend's Zesbergenprijs. The 1.5 ranked amateur event races over parts of the course for the professional E3 Prize, finishing in the same place around an hour before the pros arrive.
