Demet In Yellow
Team RONA report
Dede Demet (TalgoAmerica.com) played her cards well to pocket bonus seconds and take over the yellow jersey after the second stage of the Tour of Greater Montreal. The stage, a lively criterium held in Montreal's Little Italy, was won by Laura Van Gilder (Trek Plus VW), who climbed to the seventh spot of General Classification.
Entering the third and last stage tomorrow, Demet will have a five second lead over Montreal's Geneviève Jeanson (RONA) relegated to second place of GC. For lack of a yellow jersey, Jeanson could find solace in holding on to her best Espoir (aged 23 and younger), best Canadian and best Quebecer jerseys.
Five RONA riders rank among the first 13 places of GC. Lyne Bessette (Équipe Québec) is ranked fifth after the second stage.
The play-by-play
From the gun the pace was fast, as the girls completed the first lap at more than 40 km/h. The peloton stayed together for a few laps and the front rows were occupied by those who had their eyes on yellow – Demet, the teammates Clara Hughes (Équipe Québec) and her teammate Lyne Bessette, and Jeanson, surrounded by her private RONA guard. Katrina Berger (Team T-Mobile) opened the way and imposed a fast tempo to the field, but she was not a threat to Jeanson's coveted yellow jersey.
The RONA guard did their job and prevented any breakaway or attack to become a serious threat. Yet at the 10-km mark, when Berger won the first intermediary sprint, Demet finished third and pocketed one little bonus second, which was enough to make her the virtual leader of the race – she had started the stage with a 0.7 second deficit on Jeanson. Then another second at the 30-km mark, in a time-bonus sprint won by Van Gilder.
Two-thirds into the race Bessette attempted to escape. She stayed in front for four laps, but the gap never exceeded four seconds before the RONAs brought the field back. Then it was the turn of Sara Symington (GB Nationals) and Clara Hughes to attack. The field allowed them a three-second lead for four laps, then RONA reeled them in.
The last two laps were a run-for-your-position affair. Experience won. Van Gilder served a powerful finish, while Millward and Demet edged their way to second and third places. Jeanson finished fifth, in the same time as Van Gilder's.
"I'm disappointed for my team", said Jeanson after the race. "The girls worked hard and well tonight. They rode a superb race, but I couldn't crown their work with a victory. Oh, well, that's bike racing, I still have some learning to do. But we had fun."
