32nd Giro Ciclistico d'Italia Internazionale U26 - 2.6Italy, June 15 - 23, 2002Stage 1 - June 15: Marsciano - Marsciano, 155 kmAustralian Team ReportBy Brian Stephens, AIS U23 manager The Giro d'Italia began in Marsciano, Umbria, with a 155km stage that proved to be pretty tough. The Australians (Scott Davis, Gene Bates, Dave McPartland, Adrian Laidler, Simon Gerrans, Peter Dawson) didn't give themselves the best start, missing a big split in the first 20km, but recovered after having to chase hard for the next 20km. By then a group of 10 was clear and this was later joined by another 3, making 13 that fought out the finish. Gene Bates in a group of 5 came within 25 seconds of catching them but over the last climb, the front group accelerated. The stage was won by Russian, Andrei Karpatchev riding for Maserati Synclean. Gene was 16th.
