54th Bank Austria Tour - 2.2Austria, June 10-16, 2002Main Page Results Previous stage Stage 7 - June 16: St. Michael/Lungau-Graz, 200 kmGlomser finishes in yellow after dramatic finaleSunderland wins in GrazAustrian Gerrit Glomser (Saeco) has finally won the Tour of Austria, after a dramatic final stage from Lungau to Graz won by Scott Sunderland (EDS-fakta). Glomser beat his compatriot Hans-Peter Obwaller (Austrian National Team), who led by just one second coming into the stage. After Glomser took one of the early 3 second time bonus sprints, the jersey was safely his, or so he thought. At 200 km long, this seventh and longest stage of the Tour of Austria was to the liking of riders like Sunderland, with two hard climbs, the Gaberl (1st cat) and the Wenisbuchplatte to shake off most of the field. "The team had been up there all week, fighting for a win. Jorgen Bo Petersen and Lennie Kristensen finished respectively 4th and 6th Overall, we won the Team classification gloriously, the only thing missing was a stage victory," a delighted Sunderland told Cyclingnews after the race. "I knew there were going to be constant attacks after the first sprint bonification was taken, after 42.5 km of racing. So, I went with every one of them and eventually a group of 15 got a gap secured. We rode like mad to establish a decent lead and took up to 5'50. " The group was: Claudio Astolfi (Acqua & Sapone), Alessandro Guerra (Index Alexia), Evgeni Petrov and Dmitriy Muravyev (Mapei-Quick Step), Andrey Mizurov (Mercatone Uno), Dennis Haueisen (Lta-Quattro Logistics), Harald Morscher and Jürgen Werner (Nürnberger), Jørgen Bo Petersen and Scott Sunderland (EDS-fakta), Boris Premuzic (Perutnina Ptuj), Fabio Bulgarelli and Ondrej Fadrny (De Nardi), Bernhard Kohl (Elk Haus), David McCann (Volksbank Ideal), and Martin Moser (Team Gericom Bikedrive). There were several well placed riders in this group, including Petersen (6th at 1'46), Morscher (10th at 4'02), and Petrov (11th at 4'12), and there were plenty of reasons for them to work together in order to move up on GC. As the gap grew to a dangerous 5'50, as the Saeco and Austrian National teams started to mount a chase in the peloton. As they approached the climb of Gaberl, several riders had problems following in the leading group, including Guerra, Werner, Fadrny and Haueisen. Fadrny was able to get back on and stayed in contact over the climb, with the break holding a 4'30 lead over the top of the 1600 metre pass. "My team mate Jorgen Bo and myself got yelled at by the rest of the group to slow down, because we were leading and gave it all we had: no way we were going to get caught there. We reached the top of the climb, 12 men strong and with 4'30 left," added Sunderland. However, they lost several minutes over the next 30 kilometres due to the continued efforts of the peloton to chase them. "The peloton kept chasing us vigorously because a few guys contesting the General Classification, including Jorgen Bo, were in our breakaway group. By the time we crossed the finish line for the first time it had started raining. Because it had been hot all week, the road was very slippery and in the last corner; something like 200m before the line a Mapei rider went down. Jorgen Bo, my team mate fell too and I felt bad I had no time to wait. We had another 14 km to go and only 1'20 spare on the chasing peloton." But by that stage, Glomser was once again in yellow and Petersen ended up finishing back in his group. Sunderland continues: "Then came a 3 km long climb, of 14 %! After that, we were five riders (Sunderland, Petrov, Mizurov, Premuzic, and Bulgarelli) fighting it out for the sprint after the seriously dangerous descent. I felt really strong today and chased down every one of the numerous attacks that followed on the 6km long flat towards the line. In that final corner, I was in 3rd position. I kicked in for the sprint and my back wheel slipped. I had to stop sprinting and start all over again but I made it first across the line." "It feels fantastic to win today as the team rode great all week. I'm happy I can show people I'm back. This one means a "hi, I'm back!" to all my supporters!" It was a welcome come back to form for the Australian, whose early season was ruined by a broken leg in the Tour Down Under in January. His team didn't quite take the overall honours, but they certainly didn't let the Austrians win easily. Petersen ended up finishing in the peloton, and keeping sixth overall behind Glomser, Obwaller, Luttenberger, Kristensen and Hempel in the final GC.
