RAAM Wraps Up

By David Jacobson

With the arrival of the last official finishers--the tandem team of George Thomas and Terri Gooch, followed by soloist Michael Lau--the 20th-anniversary edition of RAAM has concluded. The intense focus of racers, crews and officials now disperses. We return to the mundane, but with a new perspective, forever changed by this experience.

Time will blunt both our pain and our glory, but a new form of mental and emotional knowledge will infuse all we do. We will forever be affected by memories:

John Howard putting the hammer down.

Byron Rieper's crew RV stuck two feet deep in gravel outside Maupin.

The piney aroma and absolute silence of a 2 a.m. Oregon mountain.

Wolfgang Fasching walking like John Wayne to a Snowville, Utah hotel room after 41 straight hours on the bike.

The awful music emanating from Fredi Virag's support van.

Rob Kish smoothly passing the Tennessee Pass sign.

The warmth of Stefan Lau's crew.

Dave Green's gory shattered elbow eliciting no expression of pain except that of being prevented from remounting.

Team SAS on the podium beaming smiles as bright as the midnight moon shining on the Gulf.

Allen Larsen riding up the finish ramp in his "traction contraption" and sobbing as he held his wife and daughter.

A heart swollen with gratitude for being accepted as family, with awe at witnessing such heroism, and in anticipation of RAAM 2003.
