Fellowship Of The Wings

By David Jacobson

It is rare in sports to see such happy runners-up.

But here at the finish line, Team SAS stands tall and proud and beaming uncontrollably. Looking out over the Gulf shimmering silver under a full moon, they bask in applause for their effort.

Urs Koenig, Marc Russenberger, Urs Schmidig and Jurg Schweizer listen to the Swiss national anthem and consider their accomplishments. Stephen Masters, crew chief of the victorious RAF team, climbs the stage to congratulate them, and then the champagne sprays.

Lon Haldeman presents a $2,500 check. Asked how the team will spend its newfound wealth, Koenig says, "First, a beer." That's all the urging Masters and the RAF need. They usher their fellow competitors, still in drenched uniforms, off to the bar. It is a perfect example of the fellowship of RAAM racers and what separates this sport from so many others.

It is easy to understand why the runners-up are so happy.
