The 20th-anniversary edition of RAAM pits 53 competitors against each other in a race from Portland, Oregon to Pensacola Beach, Florida. The route traverses 2,992 miles of America's most scenic backroads through Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

Considered by endurance-event experts as "The World's Toughest Race," RAAM provides a taught eight-day drama of sporting strategy and tactics. As in any good sports event, there are stunning individual performances, comebacks, lead changes, blowouts and records set and broken.

Each racer must push beyond his or her physical, mental and emotional limits with solo riders pedaling more than 300 grueling miles per day, averaging just two hours or less of sleep, for eight to ten days, with leading teams averaging more than 500 miles per day to finish in five plus days.

To celebrate RAAM's 20th anniversary, three of the four original RAAM racers: current race director, Lon Haldeman; Michael Shermer, now director of the Skeptics Society; and John Howard, will will race to the first time station.
