Tour of Latrobe Valley - Tattersall's Cup #4 - NEVictoria, Australia, August 21, 2002Phillip Thuaux wins race fourEgan still series leaderBy Matthew Conn Bernard Sulzberger looks like the man to watch in next Wednesday's Tour of the Tamar. The 18 year old Tasmanian Institute of Sport cyclist finished second to NSW Institute rider, Phil Thuaux in yesterday's fourth round of the Tattersall's Cup. Thuaux may well be Sulzberger's main rival when he comes to Tasmanian to defend his title in the closing round of the $25,000 series. Thuaux again showed just how tough a bike rider he is by attacking just 10km into the 130km Tour of the Latrobe Valley. Together with BJ McIntosh, the two riders built up what looked like a race winning lead, until they were joined at 7km to go by a select group including Sulzberger and newly crowned Tasmanian Road Champion, Karl Menzies. On the final climb of the race, Thuaux attacked the breakaway and only Sulzberger was able to follow. The young Tasmanian pushed the tempo in the breakaway and was forced to lead out the sprint by the experienced Thuaux, who sprinted past for his second win, following victory in the first round of this year's series. Menzies led home the remnants of the breakaway group to edge out McIntosh for third place. Victorian Leigh Egan managed to hold onto his series lead after winning the bunch sprint to claim a place in the top ten. While Sulzberger, now in second overall, is almost certain to claim the Sid Patterson Rider of the Future award, a top five placing in Tasmania next week could see him claim the series win.
