Tour of the Southern Grampians - Tattersall's Cup #3 - NEVictoria, Australia, August 14, 2002Simon Walker wins third roundEgan overall series leaderBy Matthew Conn Former speed skater Simon Walker, won the 130km Tour of the Southern Grampians today. The race, held around Morwell in Victoria was the third leg of the five round, Tattersall's Cup Cycling Series. After placing in the top 20 in the opening round at Ballarat, Walker made up for a disappointing showing last week, by taking out the sprint in front of nearly 60 riders. An effort that is even more commendable when you consider that he has only been racing on a bike for 14 months. Walker finished the 130km race in 3:10.21, beating Victorian Drew Torney by 10cm, with Leigh Egan in third. Run in near perfect conditions, organisers were surprised that such a large group was together at the end of the race. Held over an undulating course, the route also included a second category climb that was expected to break up the field. Egan now leads the series on 57 points from NSW evergreen, Eddie Salas who is seven points behind. Currently in third place overall is 18 year old Tasmanian Institute of Sport rider, Bernard Sulzberger. Sulzberger placed 5th in the Grampians event to go with his sixth place in last weeks race. With the tough final round on his home turf in Launceston, the former Australian junior representative is in the front running for the Sid Patterson Rider of the future trophy, awarded to the best under 23 rider of the Tattersall's series.
