Australian team report

The last stage of GP Linz was good and bad for the Australians. Raced in atrocious conditions and over a tough course it was always going to be tough for everyone to make the tight 10% time limit in force for this race. The normal for a UCI race is at least 15%.
Mark Renshaw, aided by David Pell and Peter Dawson, went hard after the 1st sprint of the day to secure his sprinters jersey. He won the sprint but 500 metres later had to climb an 18% 2km climb. He was dropped in a group of around 12 riders with Peter and David. The group was working hard to limit their losses but with 40km remaining they were stopped when organisers enforced a 10 minute time limit set by the police and stopped the group and costing Mark his jersey. A total of 41 riders were withdrawn on the last stage. The 10% limit would have been 18 minutes.
On the bright side Rory Sutherland won the stage, out sprinting a group of 8 who got clear on the last climb. This closed the gap to the overall leader but not enough to overtake him and he had to be happy with an impressive 2nd place overall behind Austrian, Stefan Rucker. Simon Gerrans was 10th in a group closing in from behind.
