Double the Orange - Etxebarria takes his second stage in a day
Osa gives Banesto their first in 11 years

As the times came in for the final riders in this afternoon's time trial in the Itzulia, first it looked like a Boogerd victory, then Bayarri's, but in the end it was the hard man of Abadino, David Etxebarria who descended in fury and "indartsu" to take his second stage of the day. Julian Gorospe's men may be disappointed that they missed out on the overall, but the two victories on the final day will surely sweeten the orange armada's taste buds. Eskerik asko they said (thank you very much) as Etxebarria signalled his intentions to do better than last year in his next main appointment - Liege-Bastogne-Liege.
Aitor Osa was able to maintain his overall lead losing fifty five seconds to Etxebarria. It was the first time Director, Eusebio Unzúe (yes, another Basque) has led his team to victory in the Itzulia in eleven years of trying.
At the start of the time trial there were only seventy seven left!! One hundred and eleven riders have pulled the pin during this five stage tour - incredible, the weather, the course and the pace taking its toll in a big, big way. So it was, as those brave enough faced the afternoon time trial.
The first two kilometres of the Time Trial roll out of Elgoibar, and it is at the two kilometre mark the climb of this morning's fog covered Azkarate starts. The climb itself is around six kilometres long with an average gradient of 6.3% and a maximum of 8.5 %. the road travels through forests of oaks, chestnuts and pine trees interrupted by pastures allowing views of the valleys below. The course, again tree covered, then loops back and down to Elgoibar with the final kilometre uphill.
Second placed David Etxebarria (+ 3.31), third and fourth placed Bayarri and Boogerd (+3.45) and fourth placed Evans (+ 3.55) were sure to provide the interest this afternoon. Only 24 seconds separated Etxebarria from Evans.
The first rider, Marcel Strauss (Gerolsteiner) left the start at 4.00 p.m. with Osa due to leave at 5.47 p.m. The best early intermediate time was set by Kurt Van de Wouwer (Lotto) with 15.33.18 and the best at the finish was Angelo Lopeboselli (Cofidis) with 27. 33. 32. Soon Alejandro Valverde (Kelme) came in with a time of 26.14, and he was quickly overtaken by De Paoli (Alessio) coming in at 26.02.
There will be no Operacion Triunfo for Juan Miguel Mercado (iBanesto) this week but half an hour before his teammate Osa is due to leave the start he clocked the best provisional time: 25.14. At the coming of the hour of truth, tensions started to mount as Boogerd and Evans were on the road and Etxebarria prepared to leave the starting ramp. Boogerd came in quickly with the best time of the afternoon and dashed some of the Australian hopes, his time 25.13.
After Boogerd's time and the fact that Evans had not shown up, things settled in until Bayarri shocked all with what was said by the Basque Paper, Diario Vasco, the ride of his life. As provisional times were posted and Bayarri had blasted Boogerd out of the winners position with a time of 24.57, 16 seconds ahead of Boogerd and 17 to Mercado, the times changed again.
Abadino's finest David Etxebarria risked all on the descent and then sprinted the final metres to finish with a time of 24.54, three seconds inside Bayarri's time. The only question remaining was how far ahead of Osa he would finish. A few minutes later Osa came in with a time of 25.49, fifty five seconds behind Etxebarria, but still enough to comfortably take the overall GC.
