42nd Vuelta al País Vasco - 2.HCSpain, April 8-12, 2002Main Page Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 3 - April 10: Vitoria - Alasua, 170 kmAitor Osa takes overBy Martin Hardie, cyclingnews.com correspondent Aitor Osa (iBanesto.com) has taken over the lead in the Vuelta a Pais Vasco, after winning today's 170 km third stage from Vitoria in the province of Araba to Altsasu in Navarra. Osa beat his breakaway companion Bingen Fernandez (Euskaltel), with Rabobank's Bram De Groot taking the sprint for the next group of riders, 1.28 behind. The peloton finished at 3'48, meaning that Osa is now the leader of the race. The third stage continued through the valleys and hills of the Basque Country, crossing today El Alto de Opakua (Cat 1), el Alto de Urbasa (Cat 2) and el Alto de La Cadena (Cat 3º) twice. The anti doping controls were conducted at a sensible time, between 7:00am and 8:15am with blood extracted from 7 teams and 48 riders. Subject to the controls were: Alessio, Ag2R, ibanesto.com, Kelme - Costablanca, Lampre-Daikin, Lotto-Adecco, Saeco and Telekom. All riders were declared "fit". 139 riders commenced the day in cold and rainy weather but this did not stop Cédric Vasseur (Cofidis) and Pietro Caucchioli (Alessio) attempting an early escape as they passed the town of Gereñu at the 23 km mark. The two managed an early gap of only 20 seconds which they extended to 57 seconds as the foot of the Alto de Opakua. Four riders moved away from the bunch on the climb but did not quite reach the two escapees. The climb saw Joseba Beloki (ONCE-Eroski), Aitor González and Di Luca (Saeco) in trouble off the back. Beloki soon abandoned as did Sabaliauskas and Spezialetti (both of Saeco). On the descent the leading pair changed with Pietro Caucchioli losing his partner Vasseur but gaining the ever-present Unai Etxebarria (Euskaltel). They had a gap of 20 seconds. The mountain prime of the Alto de Urbasa was taken by Caucchioli, followed by Hamilton and Kivilev. A group of 15 formed and quickly created a gap of 2'50 on the peloton. Between the group and the peloton were Rik Verbrugghe, Bingen Fernández and Igor Astarloa all on the same time as Beat Zberg the leader on GC. Over the next few kilometres there were constant changes at the head of the course with Toledo (Jazztel) and Unai Etxebarria (Euskaltel) setting the pace. Etxebarria soon escaped on an adventure of his own, maybe thinking yesterday's attack was a little too close to home for victory. He was chased by Toledo. Behind, a group of De Groot (Rabobank), Cioni (Mapei), Latasa, Osa and Vila (iBanesto), Bingen Fernández (Cofidis), Olano (ONCE - Eroski), Caucchioli (Alessio), Igor Flores (Euskaltel), Garmendia (Coast), Astarloa (Saeco) and Maestre (Relax) maintained their distance from the peloton and drew Toledo back. Over the next thirty minutes Etxebarria opened a gap of 1'20, with Iñigo Chaurreau (Ag2R) 3'35 behind and the peloton 5'11 behind. By this time, the Basque, Igor Astarloa (Saeco) was the leader of GC on the road. At this stage the local press were referring to Etxebarria's magnificent display of force. With 30 kilometres left, Etxebarria had a lead of 1.33 on the group of 14 who were still 5'30 ahead of the peloton which had caught Chaurreau. Big changes may occur today in the GC. The Banesto members of the break started to lift the pace and soon reduced the gap to Etxebarria to 58 seconds. Aitor Osa (iBanesto) was looking strong, being one of the three of the 14 who had started the day on the same time as Zberg; The others being Bingen Fernández (Cofidis) and Igor Astarloa (Saeco). So the stage leader on the road and the three GC contenders at this stage are all native Basque riders. The work of the group behind soon had Etxebarria looking behind, the gap falling to 21 seconds in the face of the climb of the Cadena. Aitor Osa attacked with Cioni and Bingen Fernandez following. They caught Etxebarria and quickly Osa and Fernandez moved away alone. Osa took the mountain prime with Fernandez saving his energy. The group fell apart on the climb with the first following 30 seconds behind the others at one minute behind. The peloton still 4.50 behind. Osa and Fernandez worked together braving the bad, cold weather as they headed towards Alasuna or Altsasu as they entered the last kilometre they still had a one minute gap on their pursuers. Osa led out the sprint, Fernandez attacked down the left but Osa was strong and held him off to take the stage and the yellow jersey. The pursuers were led in 1.28 later by Bram de Groot (Rabobank).
