Tour of California - 2.HCUSA, February 14-22, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - February 17: San José - Modesto, 167.7 km/104.2 miHushovd and co. click in wet CaliforniaLeiphimer holds onto gold despite rude awakenerBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor with Kirsten Robbins in Modesto Thor Hushovd (Cervélo TestTeam) has recorded win number one for 2009 with a powerful sprint on the wet streets of Modesto at the end of stage three. Cervélo rode the perfect train to deliver Hushovd to the line, ahead of Oscar Freire (Rabobank) and former teammate Mark Renshaw (Columbia-Highroad) after an uncomfortably wet and cold day in the saddle. "Hayden Roulston started it with a little more than one kilometre to go, then Dominique Rollin pulled into the last corner," explained Hushovd. "Then Brett Lancaster took over after the last corner, and I passed him with about 150 metres to go. Our team did a great job today, and I am really thankful. It's the first time we've worked together and it went well, so that was a good start. Cervélo's leadout was textbook; they lined up three ahead of him before the final kilometre and delivered him precisely to the line ahead of a disorganised peloton, something the experiened Norwegian paid tribute to. "I know that with these guys, we may be one of the best lead-out teams in the world, and I think today that we showed it," he said. One of the sprint favourites, Mark Cavendish (Columbia-High Road), had trouble getting to the head of the race, despite having Mark Renshaw at the front. "Today's finish was extremely dangerous with the little cat head reflectors [bots dots] in the road and the wet turns," said Renshaw. "With probably a kilometre to go I figured Cavendish was behind me. As we turned into the final straight I looked behind but he wasn't there. Mark was having a tossle with a rider from Rock Racing. I had a rider between me and George Hincapie, and when the sprint started he dropped the wheel." Renshaw said that the team was hoping for a win in the first true sprint stage of the tour, which is why his team pitched in to bring the break back. "We had to commit a few guys early on to bring back the break which I think sacrificed a little at the end. It's a little bit dissapointing for the team, we put a lot of work into today. We didn't get it together today but we'll have another chance." A four-man effortThe stage came down to a sprint despite the valiant efforts of four men who spent almost the entire day off the front. Bauke Mollema (Rabobank), Brian Vandborg (Liquigas), Jeff Louder (BMC Racing) and Brad White (OUCH-Maxxis) broke away before the very first climb of the day, Sierra Road, which began just 7.2km into the stage. At times, the peloton lagged five-and-a-half minutes back, but the sprinters' teams got hungry and drove the ultimately successful pursuit to recapture the escapees. "OUCH brought me on this year because of my aggressive style of racing," said White. "I wanted to bring the team some recognition today. The conditions were a lot better than they have been in the last two days but they still weren't all that great. The wind made it really hard for the break, but it was a good day, all-in-all." "I wanted to get away before the climb because I knew I wasn't going to get away on it," Jeff Louder told Cyclingnews. "I know that climb and I know Sierra Road. White attacked and I followed him. Later Mollema came across and Vandbourg came soon after." Louder was the one to initiate the attacking onto the circuits that broke up the break with the peloton closing in, using the slight rise of an overpass to his advantage. "It was just my turn in the rotation and I saw that Mollema was the strongest and that White was was getting tired. I've raced in Belgium a long time and you gotta attack on the bridges!" Leipheimer's scary momentGeneral classification leader Levi Leipheimer kept his position at the top of the standings, but not without a few scary moments. During the stage he crossed paths with a teammate and crashed, but was not seriously injured and was back underway after a speedy bike change. His teammates pulled him safely back up to the peloton, where he remained for the duration. "I just looked down for a second and wasn't fully concentrating in that moment - it was windy out there so it was hard to hold a straight line in the peloton," said Leipheimer. "I looked down, the guys moved over a little bit and we crossed wheels. It happens. It hurts a little bit. I can feel it on my butt - that's where I landed. I've done it before, it's no big deal. "It was one of those crashes that only hurts for a second and then it went away, like when you stub your toe, only bigger then that. I think thats a good sign," he added. Of the conditions heading into the finish, Leipheimer said, "With the crashes today, I thought it was better they cut [the finish circuits] down. These circuits are very nerve-racking. It's the first time we've done one this year... so it's back to racing. I forgot how hectic it can be!"
