Tour of California - 2.HCUSA, February 14-22, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 7 - February 21: Santa Clarita - Pasadena, 143 km/88.9 miAG2R fights for limelight in the Rose BowlBy Kirsten Robbins in Pasadena, California Rinaldo Nocentini put a little sun into AG2R La Mondiale's Tour of California with a win in Pasadena following what was a hectic day full of attacking riding. The Italian outsprinted what was left of the days' break, having survived everything thrown at him by the elite selection in the finale. Noncentini's AG2R La Mondiale team hasn't been featured during the week, and against the likes of Fränk Schleck, George Hincapie and Pieter Weening - all of whom have won Tour de France stages - it looked like that might continue for both Noncentini and his teammate in the break, Martin Elmiger. The French team's new recruit only Italian proved to have the fastest legs on the finishing circuits, and used them to outkick the remnants of the break - Cervélo's Hayden Rouslton and Rabobank's Weening. "This is our first victory of the year so I'm very pleased about it," said Nocentini. "I think this might be my most important victory. We had two riders in the front group and I'm really happy with how we played our tactics." "Today was impressive, and overall it has been a hard tour," he continued. "Today was a beautiful route but it was a difficult climb. The mountains are very hard for me. For me this race has been a little difficult, with crashes and the bad weather. I stuck through it and today I'm very happy with the stage win." Nocentini and his teammate Martin Elmiger cleverly timed attacks against their mid-race breakaway companions on the final five finishing circuits. The other eight riders included with Fränk Schleck (Team Saxo Bank), Markus Zberg (BMC Racing Team), George Hincapie (Team Columbia - Highroad), Hayden Roulston (Cervélo TestTeam), Chris Baldwin (Rock Racing), Pieter Weening (Rabobank), Addy Engels (Quick Step), Martin Elmiger (AG2R La Mondiale), Christian Vande Velde (Garmin - Slipstream). AG2R was the only team with more than one rider in the break, and it worked its numbers to its advantage. All eyes were on the winner of this stage last year, George Hincapie, but he was a marked man - not allowed to escape and forced to chase the attacks of the others. As the experienced American grew tired of covering attacks from Zberg, Elmiger and Weening, the dangerous Schleck escaped over a crucial two kilometre climb located just after the start-finish line. His manoeuvere lasted one full lap, long enough to split the break in half. "Every day I've been feeling better and better," said Schleck. "In the end we all saw that it was going to be a very tactical race. With the two American's Hincapie and Vandevelde in the break, everyone was trying to get away from them. But, the two really knew that they had to take care of me. It was pure tactics today." The bunch regrouped for one last hurrah, however, but then on the final lap, Nocentini, Roulston and Weening got away from the rest of the break, and they managed to hold their slight lead until the end despite some last-minute cat and mouse action. Team Astana reduced the break's margin to a manageable two minutes by the finish, and consequently there was no change to head of the overall classification. Levi Leipheimer stays in the golden jersey, 36 seconds ahead of David Zabriskie (Garmin-Slipstream) and 45 seconds ahead of Michael Rogers (Columbia-Highroad). At only 143 kilometres, the penultimate stage was the shortest jaunt of this year's Tour of California. What it lacked in length was made up for in difficulty because teams sitting further back took a shot at flowing into an early break along the foothills of the snow-capped San Gabriel Mountains. The speed of the peloton quickened with every attack but no break got loose until the day's only KOM located on the Millcreek Summit. "It was a hard stage in the beginning; there were a lot of attacks from riders dangerous to the GC," explained Leipheimer. "We always had to chase them down, and it took a while before there was a breakaway on which we could agree." The decisive 10-man escape formed at the base of the day's lengthy ascent, with the summit rising to 4,900 feet. Hincapie and Schleck were the highest-ranked riders in the overall, but sitting 6:30 back from Leipheimer, neither posed a threat to the race lead until the break grew to its maximum of 4:30. "My teammates were riding on the front all day and then we were told the gap was more than four minutes so I told the guys that they had to speed up," said Leipheimer, who was comfortable allowing the break to have a three-minute advantage. "But then I was like woah, woah slow down that's too fast.' I wanted them to leave a little left in the tank for tomorrow." The event's KOM leader Francisco Mancebo (Rock Racing), who also took the stage 1 victory, crashed along the 24-kilometre fast plunge to the Rose Bowl finishing circuits. The Spaniard hit a rock on the side of a rough patch of pavement. According to a team press release he was taken to the Huntington Memorial Hospital where he is believed to have suffered a concussion plus a broken hand and elbow. Jason McCartney (Saxo Bank) followed Mancebo in the KOM competition and assumed the jersey lead. As the break away blasted down to the finishing circuits, Vandevelde flatted a rear tyre. After what may have been the fastest wheel change in the history of bike racing, he was back in the front group before anyone realised he was missing. "I knew it was going to be aggressive from the get-go, and our team wanted to get someone in the breakaway," said the Illinois native, who contributed to the race tactics. "Our team was aggressive trying to get in there because we knew it would eventually snap," he continued. "But it was super hard - it took 35-40 miles before the breakaway was established, and that was not fun. But once we got away it was a really strong group and we knew it was going to stay away." Vandevelde noted the thousands upon thousands of fans cheering for the successful break away during the final laps. "The fans were unbelievable down there," he continued. "Frank Schleck came up to me and showed me he had goosebumps all over - it was a neat feeling to race through a throng of fans like any Grand Tour stage." The ultimate stage of the Tour of California will showcase a point-to-point road race from Rancho-Bernardo to Escondido. There are four climbs en route including the most difficult climb up the slope of Palamar Mountain, a 19-kilometre ascent to the top. Astana will have their hands full containing the plethora of climbers that follow him close behind in the overall. One thing is for sure, upon the finish line a 2008 Tour of California winner will emerge.
