Tour of California - 2.HCUSA, February 14-22, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - February 19: Visalia - Paso Robles, 216.1 km/134.3 miCavendish delivers the double in CaliBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor with Kirsten Robbins in Pasa Robles, California Mark Cavendish delivered a second stage win to his Columbia-Highroad squad in the fifth stage of Tour of California, once again getting the better of Quick Step's Tom Boonen in the bunch sprint. Rabobank's Pedro Horillo filled in for his fallen leader Oscar Freire, who crashed out in Wednesday's stage, with a fine third place finish. "This was the stage I was targeting since we got here, it worked out perfectly," said Cavendish. "The guys worked so well for us. It was touch and go whether we were going to get the break back. Again it was George [Hincapie] and Mark Renshaw - once I get dropped off in that position there's no way I can do anything but win." "My team and the other teams worked really hard to bring them back," said Cavendish of the break. "I had the best team in the world to lead me out. I had Big George in the last kilometres bringing me down [to the] the last kilometre which was a little downhill. Renshaw went again just before 500 metres to go and I was dropped off at 200 metres to go. There were loads of other teams there from Cervélo, Liquigas and QuickStep. It was a battle of the teams, really. Fortunately we came out on top." Notwithstanding Cavendish's description of the battle of teams, he maintained his confident tone from yesterday's win. "I could see a shadow to my right and I thought it was Tom [Boonen]. I was looking at the video after and I realised it was me - I was racing against my own shadow! When I saw my shadow I kept going because yesterday I sat up early and he was close." Once again Tom Boonen (Quick Step) was actually in Canvendish's shadow, this time almost by a bike length as the Columbia sprinter waited a little longer to start his celebration. "It was pretty fast and chaotic in the last kilometre but once we got through that it was ok," said Boonen. "I think we all did a really good job and there wasnt anything else we could have done. The guys kept speeding up but it was impossible to pass." Even though the Belgian is zero from two on the sprint stages, his trip to California is not all lost, as the first few days gave him good training for the races he is really targetting. "The early weather in this race helped me a lot [for the Classics]. I feel great now after racing two or three days in the rain!" Levi Leipheimer (Astana) finished the stage well up in the top 20 to maintain his lead in the overall classification. With no KOM climbs on the day Francisco Mancebo (Rock Racing) effectively had a day off in defence of his KOM lead. He lost the sprint classification jersey lead to Cavendish however, with the Brit taking 15 points in that competition courtesy of the stage win. The long road homeStage five from Visalia to Paso Robles was the longest journey of this year's Tour of California, and as usually occurs when the peloton is facing a long day in the saddle, the early break was given a long leash. Familiar with this protocol, teams which have not scored a stage win went on the attack from the gun. At mile seven, the six lucky men formed the day's breakaway: Pieter Weening (Rabobank), Jeff Louder (BMC Racing Team), Cameron Evans (OUCH p/b Maxxis), Matthew Crane (Jelly Belly Cycling Team), Curtis Gunn (Fly V Australia) and Glen Chadwick (Rock Racing). They built up a 6:50 lead on the long, pancake-flat valley roads of King County. The parcours for the day was more of a transition stage to get the race from the Sierra Nevadas back over to the coast and as such, the first two-thirds of the stage were long flat roads, with only seven turns in the first 100km. "It was pretty boring; we were trying to make jokes just to pass the time," Chadwick told Cyclingnews. "The best [joke] we saw was a 'dangerous descent' sign out there [on the flat.] That was probably the highlight of the day!" The kiwi stalwart laughed when asked why he always ends up in the long breakaways. "It always seems that way. Rudy [Pevenage] told us we had the day off, but I said I would see what happens. I told everyone we weren't doing anything today, but I got into it nice and early - 200km off the front. Long roads and they were pretty rough. I thought I was in Quebec doing the Tour de Beauce, they were that rough!" The break added another minute on the way up to the highest point of the stage at mile 95, putting Weening into the virtual overall lead. The Dutchman picked up time bonuses at both of the intermediate sprints: three seconds in Cholame and two in Shandon behind Evans. "We worked really well together all day," said Matt Crane. "It took us 30 kilometres to get going and accustomed to where the wind was coming from. We rotated all day and in the last six kilometetres we started attacking each other. That started to break us up." Louder and Gunn were dropped from the breakaway on a small climb in the final 20 miles, but the other four persevered, still holding 1'30 with 10km to go. The chase was touch and go, but the leading quartet failed to cooperate on the rolling approach to Paso Robles and were caught with 5km to go. "I don't know how they do it but the ProTour teams always know how to time it," said Chadwick. "It's like a minute for every ten kilometres. So we had three minutes at 30 kilometres to go then two minutes at 20 kilometres to go!" Astana controlled the peloton until an attack by Tim Johnson put the pressure on the sprinters' teams to get the race under control. Columbia-Highroad and Liquigas took the front of the peloton as Jens Voigt (Saxo Bank) bridged up to Johnson. A Liquigas rider also joined the brief breakaway until Columbia closed it down to set up the sprint for Cavendish. The peloton split on the wide highway finish, with Cervélo setting up on the right and Columbia on the left, but another massive leadout by Mark Renshaw delivered Cavendish to his second consecutive stage victory.
