Stage 1 - September 7: Track racing - Day 1

Records tumble on cycling's opening day

The Laoshan velodrome proved to be as fast for the Paralympians as it proved to be last month for the Olympians, and the British continued their dominance on the track. Between the teams from Great Britain and Australia, three world records were set on the first day of the competition. The British edged out the Australians in the gold medal tally 3-2 to give the English-speakers a sweep in the first day's events.

Britain's Darren Kenny set the pace carving a full six seconds off his own world record in the Individual Pursuit (CP3) heats and then went on to out-class his opponent Jin Yong-sik from the Republic of Korea in the final, overtaking him just one kilometer into the 3km event and winning the title outright without having to go the full distance.

More records fell in the next races, first to Italy's Paulo Vigano in the LC3-4 kilometre time trial with a new world best in the heats, then to Australia's Kieran Modra in the Individual Pursuit (B&VI 1-3) heats. Modra and pilot Tyson Lawrence followed that up by clipping a further 0.8 seconds off the time and striking gold in the final. Determined not to be left out, Britain's Simon Richardson smashed the Men's kilometre tine trial (LC3) world record. Australia hit back with an LC4 class world record by Greg Ball in a time which led Ball to the overall event bronze medal.

Britain's Aileen McGlynn and pilot Ellen Hunter secured the third gold for their country in the B&VI 1-3 kilometre, going under 1 minute 10 seconds for the first time ever to push the two Australian squads into silver and bronze.
