Tour of Missouri - 2.1USA, September 8-14, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Stage 7 - September 14: St. Louis Circuit Race, 79 milesCheeky Chicchi covers Cavendish in Missouri finaleVande Velde caps season with overall winBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor with Kirsten Robbins in St. Louis, Missouri The final stage of the Tour of Missouri, a circuit race around St. Louis, was more of a parade than a full race, as remnants of Hurricane Ike drenched the city overnight, leaving part of the course unusable. However, the shortened stage was still a fight for bragging rights as to who was fastest in the midwest, with triple stage winner Mark Cavendish the man to beat. Despite a perfect lead-out from his team, the final 200 metres were a little too difficult for him to hold the front and an opportunistic Francesco Chicchi (Liquigas) jumped around him for the win. Safely back in the field Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Chipotle) rode into the finish for the overall win. "We started on the train of Columbia; Mark didnt seem to want to launch the sprint so I did," Chicchi said. "I think I might have surprised Mark coming out to sprint that early due to the headwind. I got the edge on him and very fortunately Mark couldnt come back around me. I was very lucky to have beaten Mark today." "He flew past me tremendously," Cavendish admitted. "Its the first time someones gone past me in a sprint since March. So you know, it was shocking... but Francesco is really fast so what can I do?" Cavendish admitted that the final straight was the deciding factor and that he jumped too early. "I told they guys that they had to lead me as far as they could to the line because there was a massive headwind," he said. "I told them to deliver me as late as possible and I ended up coming off the wheel too early. Chicchi came past me at such speed that I had to eat my words a little bit. I was passed... I was beaten and thats that. Its upsetting after the work the team has done for me. They did a tremendous lead out." Cavendish kept his sprint jersey, while Dominique Rollin (Toyota-United) won the KOM competition. The best young rider of the race was Roman Kreuziger (Liquigas) while Jeff Louder (BMC) was named most aggressive rider for the week thanks to his long breakaway rides on stages four and six. How it unfoldedOvernight rainstorms courtesy of Hurricane Ike wreaked havoc on the city of St. Louis. As such Forest Park was partially flooded and the course had to be shortened accordingly. This lowered the overall distance of the stage from 70 to 53 miles (85km). So if Columbia had any plans of trying to unseat race leader Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Chipotle) it would have to happen quickly. However, before the race started Columbia's captain George Hincapie said his team was happy to keep the race safe and just try to win the field sprint with their ace Mark Cavendish. Nonetheless, attacks started as the race rolled off the line, with less time to establish a possible race-winning move. Toyota-United started hostilities, followed by Colavita-Sutter Home and BMC. Finally, two riders moved away and the field slowed its pursuit. Kirk O'Bee (Health Net-Maxxis) and Jeremy Powers (Jelly Belly) got a gap and were initially chased by Reid Mumford (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast). But he was not able to bridge across and the peloton felt confident that they could chase two riders down whenever they felt the need. Powers and O'Bee rotated well but strong winds made gaining much of an advantage difficult. The pair only managed a maximum gap of three minutes with half the race to run. At this point Garmin-Chipotle had held court on the front, but was eventually joined by Sparkasse to bring the gap back down. Liquigas later sent a rider up the road, as did Symmetrics and Colavita, which brought the gap down significantly. The field sat on the gap of a minute for the rest of the penultimate lap. Halfway through the final lap the deficit had dropped to under a minute as O'Bee finally made a desperate move, holding on solo until about 5km to go. The hard charging field soon swallowed him whole, however. Into the final kilometre, Columbia moved the front, but faced plenty of challengers after a hard week of racing. At 250 metres Columbia still held the front around the final corner as Bernhard Eisel dragged Cavendish to the line; his efforts were in vain as Francesco Chicchi (Liquigas) managed to hold Cavendish's wheel before ambushing the Manxman and coming around for the win. Perfect way to endAfter a fifth place in the Tour de France, Christian Vande Velde and his team can be satisfied with the year. However, losing the overall at the Tour de Georgia in April (to Team Columbia) the squad has to be satisfied with the win this week. "Everyones overall impression is that its been hard," said Vande Velde about this year's race. "Columbia started the race out early, taking control to bring Mark to his wins. I actually didnt expect to win the time trial. But it was a beautiful course down through the Ozarks. From there on it was game on - war - with everyone trying to throw everything at us to take away the 18 seconds I had in the time trial. It was a great race. I was thinking about it the other day... Im happy they gave us such a great fight!" The overall win for Vande Velde is his first since the 2006 Tour of Luxembourg. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here
