Tour of Missouri - 2.1USA, September 8-14, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - September 10: Branson (ITT), 18 milesVande Velde continues top season with 'hardest' TT winGC picture comes quickly into focusBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Branson, Missouri with additional reporting from Kirsten Robbins The top American at this year's Tour de France, Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Chipotle), is riding a wave in his best season ever. A fifth place at the Tour made the season for his team, a wild card entry. However, Vande Velde is not resting on that accomplishment. He placed third at the US professional time trial championships in August, behind his teammate David Zabriskie. But that still was not enough for him, saying that he was too cautious in the race and that he could have gone harder. Well he certainly went harder in the individual time trial at the Tour of Missouri, blasting the competition by a healthy margin to claim the stage and overall lead. "It was a surprise," said Vande Velde about the win. "I wasn't a hundred percent confident with myself because of the way I've been feeling. I've been dealing with this-and-that the last couple of weeks and I didn't perform that well in the national championships. Even yesterday with the lead out Mick [Rogers] gave [Cavendish] he almost killed me and my morale even more!" "It was a surprise but at the same time I rode the course in the morning and it motivated me to ride a good time trial. Time trials are always taxing even when you are going well and I always start out slower. I had Mick behind me which is always great motivation." Vande Velde said he heard from last year's TT winner here, Levi Leipheimer, that this course was the hardest time trial he had done - but did not actually believe him... until today. "Levi told me that it was the hardest time trial that he ever did - and I was like come on!' But I'd have to agree now that it is. I never really got into a big rhythm and I had to be very focused getting over all the climbs. It's so easy to just give up at the top of each climb." Vande Velde's result was impressive given that he bested a former world champion Michael Rogers (Columbia), the defending race overall champion George Hincapie (Columbia) as well as his own teammate and current US time trial champion David Zabriskie. "Today was a big deal for me to finish ahead of a rider like Mick Rogers, and there are a lot of good time trialists here," he said. Now with the race lead Vande Velde is looking to put a winning cap on an already successful season. Another impressive ride came from the current Canadian champion Svein Tuft (Symmetrics) who set the best time halfway through and remained in the hot seat until Vande Velde's finish. Rogers knocked him down to the third step a few riders later. "I rank this as one of the top five time trials I've ever done in my life," said Tuft. "I think Beijing gave me a lot of confidence as a rider. I did everything I could to prepare going into that and I could see that I could compete with some of the best guys in the world. It helped me to focus coming into this race and not mess around at all." Tuft said that the difficulty of the course made the strategy simple. "I did what I needed to do and stayed as fresh as possible going into today. There is no trick to this course; I just had to ride with everything I had. There was no point in conserving. I hit this course with everything I had all the way to the finish." "There is such a huge pace change because some of the climbs do get really steep. I think the rider who can stay on top of his gear going over the climbs and still pick up speed over the top is the rider that is going to do well. It all comes down to form and fitness. I used a 55/44 and an 11-23." The overall picture is essentially today's stage results, with Vande Velde taking the overall lead from double stage winner Mark Cavendish. The sprinter's face showed a hard effort to honour wearing the yellow jersey, but he only managed 41st. Columbia's Italian time trial champion Marco Pinotti had bad luck today with a rear puncture, while defending champion Hincapie finished fourth. Now the question to ask is will Columbia continue its impressive finishing displays now that the peloton control falls to Garmin-Chipotle? Or will they put their resources up the road to put pressure on Vande Velde to defend their lead? Second place Michael Rogers was upfront in answering this question. "Obviously it's going to be hard for things to change on the classification for us, but there are many more possibilities for us with a rider like Mark Cavendish," he said. "The pressure has been lifted off of us now. I think we wont be playing as much of an aggressive role in the last couple of days because it doesn't make any sense for Columbia to work on the front to bring [Garmin] to the finish. They are going to have to take the lead from now on. But like I said the race isn't over yet and anything can happen." Rogers cited the parcours as the main reason why there is not likely to be a change in the overall, with mostly rolling terrain the rest of the way into St. Louis. "There are no really decisive elements about the race, no big climbs or decisive mountain. Taking back the yellow is going to be no easy feat, these guys have experience and they are a strong team. Although the courses are undulating there are no decisive moment where we can make an attack. But certainly anything can happen." Garmin-Chipotle once again showed its focus on the time trial - putting four riders in the top ten with Tom Danielson in eighth and Danny Pate in ninth. "I've been working on my time trial position a lot this winter and my team has put a lot of effort into that. We don't mess around when it comes to warming up, equipment, wattage - and team Columbia is the same," said Vande Velde. "So it is no surprise when you see in a time trial these two team Garmin-Chipotle and Columbia are dominant in the top ten." "We've put a lot of effort in the time trial and Christian has really grown a lot in that respect," said Garmin-Chipotle director Jonathan Vaughters. "I think he's got a very good chance of winning the Tour de France next year and I think the next step to him doing that is making sure he is racing hard all the way to the end of the season." "It sets up properly for the next year where he can take a rest at the proper time of year and rest back up, as opposed to stopping right after the Tour and taking a break. It's hard because he wants to just take a rest after doing the Tour and the Giro. We've pushed all out guys to race hard all the way to the end of the season." Apparently Vande Velde is in agreement. "I finished the time trial in the Tour de France and I couldn't wait for it to begin again in 2009!" Rock Racing had a rough day with two riders outside the time cut, Justin Williams and Sterling Magnell, as well as every rider fined 100 Swiss Francs for wearing differently designed team kits. Elliott Cervantes (Tecos) was the only other time cut. Tomorrow's stage is a new route from Lebanon to Rolla, and reportedly has the toughest 'climb' of the tour -a 1.5-mile (2.4km) climb of 12 percent -which is one of three KOMs tomorrow. This will be a major factor in deciding the KOM competition, currently led by Dominique Rollin (Toyota-United). Cyclingnews will have up-to-the-minute live coverage, beginning at 11:00 a.m. CDT.
