5th Tour of Britain - 2.1Great Britain, September 7-14, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - September 12: Darlington - Gateshead, 156kmPetacchi wins the Gateshead gallopBy Gerry McManus in Gateshead Alessandro Petacchi (Team LPR Brakes – Ballan) exploded down the finishing straight at Hillgate Quay in Gateshead to win his second stage of the 2008 Tour of Britain. The Italian sprint star held his position in the tough run in to the finish. The final kilometre had two tight turns with the peloton travelling at speed over a bridge spanning the river Tyne and Petacchi powered his way past Rob Hayles (Team GB) to take the honours. A fast moving Edvald Boasson Hagen (Team Columbia) tried to go around the outside but had to settle for third place after netting the previous two stage victories. Geoffroy Lequatre finished safely in the bunch and now leads the race by six seconds to Steve Cummings (Barloworld). Daniel Martin (Team Garmin-Chipotle p/b H30) gained the most in the overall classification stakes when he finished in the 18-man front group and moved up to third overall and only 14 seconds behind Lequatre. "It was perfect for us today," said race leader Lequatre. "Garmin and LPR helped us to ride. The finish was nervous and a little bit difficult with the rain. It was very slippery but I kept a good place in the peloton and finished in the first ten in the sprint. It began to get dangerous when it started to rain about 20-25km away from the finish and there were a lot of crashes. Tomorrow is probably going to be the biggest day. If I can make it through tomorrow OK, then Sunday will be good but the race is not finished yet." Stage winner Petacchi described the final sprint for the line. "Today was very very difficult," said the Italian sprinter: "Because the last 10 kilometres were not very fast because of the wet roads. O'Grady (Stuart) did a lot of work on the front and I stayed in the wheels. I started my sprint very early at 300m to go. I had Boasson Hagen and Rob Hayles on my right so I attacked down the left. It was difficult because of the cold and the wind and my legs were not very good. The team did a lot of work for me today. Di Luca, Spezialetti, Bosisio and Ermeti worked for many kilometres to go and I wanted to win the sprint for them." How it unfoldedThe whole race was quite simply today. Scotsman Evan Oliphant (Plowman Craven RT) attacked just as the neutralised section ended at the start of the stage. Bradley McGee (Team CSC Saxobank) and Pete Williams (Pinarello CandiTV) joined Oliphant and the trio pulled out a ten second gap over an Agritubel led bunch. Diego Caccia (Barloworld) saw the opportunity and jumped across to the leaders but he had to work hard to make the connection. None of these riders were a real threat to Lequatre's lead but the main field rode tempo to limit the leaders margin. The four riders proceeded to grow their lead to over six minutes. Oliphant took the maximum king of the mountain points at Langley with Williams taking the next at High Barns and the sprint at Harelaw. The special primes were largely ignored by the quartet who were working together for the stage victory rather than waste energy fighting each other. Caccia won the sprint in Morepeth and Oliphant took the final one Seaton Sluice. LPR and Team Garmin-Chipotle were leading the charge and the gap started to fall dramatically as the finish in Gateshead loomed. Caccia crashed on a descent and he was caught by the charging Barloworld led bunch. Williams attacked twice as the gap to the bunch came down to under 30 seconds but was brought back by McGee and Oliphant. McGee put one last effort in as the bunch caught the other two and the former prologue winner of the Tour de France tried to time trial his way clear. McGee dangled precariously off the front with only 100m lead and his bid for glory was over when the bunch swarmed past him with three kilometres to go. The peloton split under the combination of speed and the twisty final kilometre and Petacchi showed his still rules as king of the sprints. Hayles and Boasson Hagen did make it difficult for the Italian who had to lunge for the line and had no time to celebrate his victory. There was no change in the mountains of sprint competitions today but Di Luca pulled on the green jersey as points leader. Saturday's stage features a tough 153km stage from Glasgow to Drumlanrig Castle. The Menock pass at 109km is the toughest category one climb in the race and nearly 10km long. If Martin has the legs on the day to seize the opportunity and stay clear to the finish, he could be in yellow tomorrow night.
