5th Tour of Britain - 2.1Great Britain, September 7-14, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - September 11: Kingston upon Hull - Dalby Forest, 168kmBoasson Hagen’s does the double at DalbyBy Gerry McManus in Dalby Forest Edvald Boasson Hagen (Team Columbia) added another victory to his tally in the Tour of Britain when he sailed across the line with time to spare in Dalby Forest on Thursday. The 21-year-old Norwegian attacked Danilo Di Luca's (Team LPR) and Matt Goss (CSC Saxobank) to catch and pass Victor Hugo Peña (Rock Racing) in the last kilometre and win his second stage. These four riders had been part of a five man break that had been away for most of the 165km stage. The main field closed the gap to eleven seconds in the end and Geoffroy Lequatre (Agritubel) held on to the yellow jersey. There is no change in the top nine overall from yesterday. Steve Cummings (Barloworld) lies second overall at six seconds with Gabriele Bosisio (Team LPR Brakes) third at a further four seconds. "This seems to be my speciality," laughed Boasson Hagen, talking about his late move to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. "My team worked hard to get me into the break. I was lucky that nobody that was in contention for the general classification was in the break so the bunch didn't work so hard behind." Race leader Lequatre described his team's day: "It was hard again today for us. There were lots of attacks that we had to control. We had to keep checking the numbers of the riders in the break. We chased for maybe 40 or 50 kilometres and finally we let the little group go. The finish was hard too, the last climb was very steep but the team did a lot of work. I had Emilien Berges and Romain Feillu to help me and we got a good result today and we hope we can do the same again tomorrow. "Daniel Martin [Team Garmin-Chipotle p/b H30] attacked on the penultimate climb and he got away on his own but we didn't panic. There were other teams that wanted to chase [Martin] too and we have kept the yellow jersey. Today was important to hold on to the jersey because the run in to the finish was so hard." How it unfoldedTravis Meyer (SouthAustalia.com/AIS), Di Luca and Goss had made the early break and had a slender lead of 20 seconds. The Aussie duo had escaped the clutches of the bunch and Di Luca also managed to slip away to join the leaders. Team Columbia had missed the break had closed the deficit to 12 seconds on the outskirts of Beverly where Boasson Hagen and Victor Hugo Peña (Rock Racing) made the jump and latched on the leaders when they reached the East Yorkshire town. Team Columbia stopped chasing with their man in the break and the lead went out to two minutes. It took a little time for Agritubel to get organised but they looked impressive on the front of the peloton which was then stretched out in one long line behind them. They kept the breakaway quintet within a reasonable distance. None of the five were a major threat to Lequarte's lead providing the gap didn't grow too much. Goss picked up maximum points in the sprint at Barton and Boasson Hagen got the next two at Bridlington and Scarborough The going got a little tougher for the leaders when reached the North Yorkshire Moors where flat roads were replaced by energy sapping, undulating terrain. The twisty roads also hampered the chase with Team Garmin-Chipotle leading the bunch hoping to bring Julian Dean up for a sprint victory. Daniel Lloyd (An Post – Sean Kelly Team) was also on the front putting in a strong effort for teammates Dan Fleeman and Benny De Schrooder who are still in contention for the overall victory. Lloyd had been away in a do or die break with Giairo Ermeti yesterday but today he was playing the domestique role. Back in the break, Peña crested the summit of the first climb of the day at Falsgrave with Di Luca following the Colombian over the top. Di Luca put in a blistering attack on the second climb at North Side which saw Meyer and Peña going backwards and losing contact. Boasson Hagen and Goss struggled over the top but regained contact with the Italian on the descent. Di Luca dropped the duo again on the final climb at Dalby Forest but they fought their way back again. Peña had somehow managed to find the strength to drag himself back to the leaders and back into contention for the stage. He attacked the trio on the run in to the finish with three kilometres to go and managed to open up a useful gap. Boasson Hagen repeated his heroic escapade from yesterday by putting in another explosive effort with less than a kilometre to go to pass the Colombian and take a deserved victory. Peña was also caught by Di Luca and Goss who finished second and third respectively. He held on to finish fourth but only by half a wheel on the bunch led in by New Zealander Julian Dean. It is a flatter day tomorrow but there are still time bonuses at Harelaw, Morpeth and Seaton Sluice on the way to Gateshead, Newcastle and these alone could shuffle the pack again.
