5th Tour of Britain - 2.1Great Britain, September 7-14, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - September 10: Worcester - Stoke-on-Trent, 156kmBoasson Hagen snatches victory in Stoke on TrentBy Gerry McManus in Stoke-on-Trent Edvald Boasson Hagen (Team Columbia) narrowly snatched victory away from Giairo Ermeti (Team LPR) in the potteries town of Stoke on Trent on stage four of the Tour of Britain. The 21-year-old from Norway powered away from the break of the day as the bunch closed in, catching and passing the lone Italian leader on the uphill finish to win by a bike length. The Norwegian time trial champion used his talent well as he jumped across to Ermeti and used his sprinting strength to power around the twisty finishing straight to take the chequered flag. The duo finished four seconds ahead of Danilo di Luca who was punching his bars after his LPR team missed out on a second stage win in Britain. Di Luca held off the challenge from Julian Dean (Team Garmin-Chipotle p/b H30) and Kristof Goddaert (TopSport – Vlaanderen) who finished fourth and fifth respectively. Yesterday's hero Geoffroy Lequatre (Agritubel) finished ninth at nine seconds and takes over the yellow jersey from teammate Emilien Berges, who was unlucky to puncture and lost over a minute to the stage winner. The pack was reshuffled again with Barloworld's Steve Cummings now in second place six seconds behind Lequatre and Gabriele Bosissio (Team LPR Brakes) third at ten seconds. 35 seconds separates the top nine riders. "I was waiting until somebody else started the sprint," said Boasson Hagen: "But nobody did and I knew I had to go to catch Ermeti but it was close. I knew the sprint was uphill and it wouldn't be a very fast. I took the last corner a bit wide and it was lucky that I caught him. I heard on the radio that the bunch was getting closer and I heard Roger (Hammond) screaming 'Go Go Go' from behind in the peloton so I attacked." "This was my fifth victory this season. I hope this will be good preparation for the World Championships." Race leader Geoffroy Lequatre had mixed emotions wearing the yellow jersey. "I am happy because I am the yellow jersey but a little bit sad because the yellow jersey was on my wheel and he had a puncture," said Lequatre. "I am happy because the jersey is still in the Agritubel team. It was hard for us today because yesterday we were first and second and today nobody would help us. There was an LPR rider in the break who was only 1min 56secs behind. The boys did a really good job today and perhaps tomorrow is not going to be easy to control." How it unfoldedBen Swift (Great Britain) and Kristian House (Rapha Condor Recycling.co.uk) were busy fighting for position for the first king of the mountains prime at High Habberley and had been away for a short while in a small group. The leaders were caught as they approached the climb with Swift attacking on the third category ascent followed by Wesley Sulzberger (SouthAustalia.com/AIS), Ermeti and Boasson Hagen. A leading group formed over the summit with David Millar (Team Garmin-Chipotle p/b H30) setting the pace on the front of the bunch behind. Stuart O'Grady (Team CSC Saxobank) Serge Pauwels (TopSport – Vlaanderen), Daniel Lloyd (An Post – Sean Kelly Team), Santiago Botero (Rock Racing) and Rob Hayles (Great Britain) had seen the danger and joined the move as it formed. Millar saw the danger and put the hammer down to jump across to make the leading group 10 strong and their lead increased to two minutes as they shared the workload. Ermeti had won both intermediate sprints at Wolverhampton, Bedlam and Stone and Swift took maximum points on the climbs at Jiggers Bank and the Saddle of Wrekin. He finished the day in the sprinters jersey as some compensation for missing the stage win. The gap was down to one 1min 20secs with 25km to go and tumbling fast as the Agritubel team strung out the bunch in pursuit of the leaders. There was a flurry of attacks as the bunch bore down on the leaders inside the last 10km with Ermeti taking flight and lookin certain to take victory. Boasson Hagen was using all cylinders as he chased and passed the Italian in style. Tomorrow's stage could see the time gaps stretching with three climbs coming in quick succession at the end of this 168km stage - 138km Falsgrave (cat 2), 152km North Side (cat 3) and 155km Dalby Forest (cat 4). Ben Swift now has he mountains jersey he won last year and Roger Hammond is still leading on points
