5th Tour of Britain - 2.1Great Britain, September 7-14, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - September 9: Chard - Burnham-on-Sea, 185kmDay-trip to the seaside pays off for BergesBy Gerry McManus Emilien Berges (Agritubel) attacked his breakaway companions and time trialled his way to the finish in Burnham on Sea to take stage three of the Tour of Britain. Thanks to his victory he managed to wrestle the yellow jersey from the shoulders of overnight leader Alessandro Petacchi (Team LPR Brakes). The Frenchman proved to be the strongest on a tough stage in the Exmoor region of Devon after he escaped from a nine man group that had been formed in the latter stages of the race by riders jumping across to lone leader Geoffroy Lequatre (Agritubel). Lequatre had a little compensation when won the group sprint to take second spot ahead of Gabriele Bosisio (Team LPR Brakes) and Daniel Martin (Team Garmin-Chipotle p/b H30). Berges now leads the race by 29 seconds, ahead of teammate Lequatre with Bosisio third at 36 seconds. "We didn't really have a strategy for the stage," explained Berges. "We were very vigilant at the start as we knew there would be a cross wind and that the first hill was early but it wasn't as hard as we thought. We all rode at the front and Lequatre attacked a number of times and he gained a lot of time on the rest of the bunch. "Myself and Freddy Bichot got into the big group who got away on the main climb and I eventually got across to the leaders. Originally I was going to lead Lequatre out for the sprint because he had won all the time bonuses during the stage but I found myself alone on the front when I accelerated in the group and they let me go. Time trialling is my speciality and when I couldn't see any motorbikes behind me with 3km to go, I knew I was going to win." "Now we have the hardest part of the race because we have the yellow jersey and it is going to be hard to keep it," Berges continued. "We will have to be vigilant everyday. Nothing is won yet. The result today is very important for me. I have been close to several wins recently but they didn't work out." How it unfoldedThe weather conditions were truly awful as the field left the Somerset town of Chard. The rain was continuous and the temperature was warm but windy, Riders donned rain capes, arm warmers and overshoes to keep as dry and warm as possible. Ben Swift started his campaign to win the king of the mountains competition for a second successive year by taking the top points at the category two Staple Hill. The weather conditions didn't deter riders attacking on the relatively flat roads of Somerset. A group of nine riders had broken away early in the stage. The leading group included mountains leader Kristian House (Rapha Condor Recycling.co.uk), Great Britain's Ben Swift and Andy Tennant, Wesley Sulzberger (SouthAustalia.com), Magnus Backstedt (Team Garmin-Chipotle p/b H30), CSC Saxobank stagiere Jonathan Bellis and last year's winner Romain Feillu (Agritubel). The leading group managed to stay clear for a while with the LPR team riding tempo on the front of the bunch to keep the leaders within striking distance. Their moment of freedom ended as they reached the town of Tiverton. Geoffroy Lequatre (Agritubel) counter attacked as the break was recaptured and the strong Frenchmen proceeded to put over 6 minutes between himself and the main field as he reached the intermediate sprint point at South Molton. Daniel Fleeman (An Post - Sean Kelly Team) and Steve Cummings (Barloworld) took off in pursuit of Lequatre and began to claw back time on the category one climb of Mile Hill. The key break emerged from the bunch on the tough climb with 24 riders reaching the summit and homing on the leader and the two British chasers but without the yellow jersey Alessandro Petacchi (LPR Brakes) and his faithful lieutenant Danilo Di Luca. Cummings and Fleeman were the first to join the Frenchman at the 130km mark then Ian Stannard (Team GB) jumped across with Giro d'Italia stage winner Gabriele Bosisio (LPR Brakes) who was aiming to keep the yellow jersey in the team. The quintet had over a minutes lead at the final climb at Cothelstone Hill but the gap was down to 40 seconds with 20km to go. Reinforcements arrived in the shape of Daniel Martin (Team Garmin-Chipotle p/b H30) with reports saying that the Irishman had single-handedly crossed the divide with Frederick Veuchelen (TopSport - Vlaanderen), Berges and Benny De Schrooder (An Post - Sean Kelly Team) all in tow. Berges launched his race winning move with 5km to go and had plenty of time to celebrate as he sat up and punched the air in celebration. Roger Hammond (Team Columbia) just moves into the green jersey as points leader ahead of Petacchi who lost over 13 minutes on the stage and is out of contention for overall victory. House has a four point lead in the mountains classification over Swift and Cummings. Di Luca still leads in the sprints competition.
