5th Tour of Britain - 2.1Great Britain, September 7-14, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - September 8: Milton Keynes - Newbury, 145kmGoss shines as the big guns fail to deliver
By Gerry McManus Australian Matt Goss (Team CSC – Saxobank) swept aside all before him as he won stage two of the Tour of Britain in Newbury. He upset the odds to hold off the powerful team Columbia sprinters Julian Dean and Chris Sutton to win the stage and go into second place overall behind Alessandro Petacchi (Team LPR Brakes – Ballan. Petacchi finished fifth on the stage to stay in yellow for at least another day. Goss is now on the same time as the Italian, courtesy of the time bonus for the stage victory. "The last 10km was very difficult," said stage winner Matt Goss: "The team did a great job keeping me up at the front. We had everyone up there in the last five kilometres and I had an easy ride with no stress sitting behind those guys. It certainly made my job easy when I was left at the front with 200m to go. We kept it fast so that guys couldn't ride up around us. There are a lot of good sprinters here and getting a win is a big boost to my confidence. Having some big names in the field makes it feel a little bit better." How it unfoldedDanilo Di Luca (Team LPR Brakes) was very active again today, going clear after 10km and winning the intermediate sprint at Winslow ahead of Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing) and Emilien Berges (Agritubel). Di Luca was part of five man break who gained over a minute by the time they reached the ascent of the third category climb at Oving. Russell Downing (Pinarello CandiTV) sprinted clear at the top to take maximum points ahead of Kevin Evans (MTN Energade). The leaders were still clear when they reached the provincial town of Aylesbury with Di Luca taking maximum points and another three bonus seconds in the sprint. The break was finally reeled in and Ian Stannard (Great Britain) took the opportunity to launch himself with maximum effort to build up a solo lead of over three minutes. Stannard even managed to extend his leading margin had as he climbed the second category climb at Streatly Hill, no doubt spurred on by hundreds of spectators cheering him on. Kristian House (Rapha Condor Recycling.co.uk) had started the day in the mountains jersey and he won another six points in the competition as he led the bunch over the summit. Stannard's lead dwindled rapidly when the LPR Brakes team took up the chase on the run into Newbury. Stannard's team mate Ben Swift managed to take some valuable KOM points from House on the third category climb at Shefford Park. The TopSport – Vlaanderen team did their best to spoil the sprinters' chances by attacking in numbers in the final 10km with the bunch splitting into two under the pressure. Goss sprinted home for his first win of the season. This is the second Tour of Britain stage victory for the 21-year-old from Launceston, Tasmania who won stage three into Wolverhampton in 2007. It is still all to play for in the general classification with only 10 seconds between Petacchi and 84 riders. House now has a 10 point lead in the E.ON King of the Mountains competition but faces a severe test of his ability tomorrow when the race loops into Exmoor with the toughest test waiting for the peloton at the category one climb at North Molton Ridge after 94km. Petacchi also leads the points competition and Di Luca has the sprinters jersey to show for his combative efforts in the first two days. Ian Stannard explained that his 40-mile solo break was not planned despite the stage starting in his home town. "It was nice to start the stage in Milton Keynes," said Stannard: "But I treated it the same as any other stage. The opportunity came and I took it. I was keen to get away. Looking at the results in past few years, a break had stayed away and more or less decided the overall general classification. I was banking on teams sitting up but it didn't happen today."
