57th Jayco Herald Sun Tour - 2.1Australia, October 12-18, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - October 14: Inverloch to Warragul, 118.1kmCSC continues in controlO'Grady wins stageBy Cyclingnews staff Stuart O'Grady has made a career from often being the strongest in a pack and proving his mettle in the final kilometres. It has netted him wins in some of the world's biggest races and today's second stage of the Sun Tour was no exception. CSC Saxo Bank's experienced captain burst out of the field in the finale in Warragul to take his fourth stage win at this race and the overall lead. The stage was made for a rider such as O'Grady - someone who can stick with the right move all day and have the legs to capitalise on the tiring bodies of those around him. That's how the day eventuated, and throughout the 118.1km from the seaside town of Iverloch the attacks were constant. The terrain along the Victorian coastline gave rise to the punchy, tough style that O'Grady thrives on, although he was made to work hard for the win. "My last win was Paris-Roubaix; I only win the big ones," OGrady said after the finish. "Its been a long time. Pretty much every other race, like Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders, I ride for a teammate. Even in the last couple of days Ive been working for the little whipper snapper in Gossy [Matt Goss] but its nice to be out there and going hard and to win." His team-mate, Matt Goss, has taken the first two day's honours and wore the leader's jersey throughout the stage; it can be argued that the Tasmanian is a junior version of his compatriot - both have a fast finish and are deadly in a small group as they have the strength to match the speed in a tactical finale. And that's exactly what was required as the group of 16 approached Warrangul this afternoon. With 20 kilometres to go a sustained effort put the selection in front by nearly a minute. In the last 10 kilometres it was O'Grady who demonstrated why he's such a fearsome competitor, shooting off the front of the escape to win by six seconds. His team-mate Lars Bak had told Cyclingnews last Friday that the race may be decided by a day's break, and that may indeed prove prophetic, with great results for CSC Saxo Bank. "I called upon all my experience today to go for the win and it paid off," OGrady said. "We thought wed take the tactics a little bit differently. There was a lot of tactics. It was a constant chess game. A few times we got in trouble but then wed go on the offence and in the end everything worked out perfect," said O'Grady before adding that, "Ive gone pretty deep the last couple of days. I think well just take it day by day from now." Trailing O'Grady in the first group to cross the line after him were Kazuhiro Mori, Will Routley, Hugo Sabido, Stuart Shaw, Lars Bak, Chris Jongeward, Benjamin Day and Simon Clarke. They all benefited from the day's labours by moving into the top ten overall, with the likes of talented youngsters Jory and Clarke riders to watch once the race heads up the tough slopes of Mt Buller. They'll be looking to cause an upset given they can maintain their high placing tomorrow. Tomorrow's stage is a fairly straightforward 137km romp through to Marysville, with one notable KOM in the final 20 kilometres that shouldn't pose too many problems for riders.
