Tour of Belgium - 2.1Belgium, May 28-June 1, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 5 - June 1: Buggenhout - Putte, 185.1 kmQuick Step rules in BelgiumBy Brecht Decaluwé After winning the time trial and the overall victory with Stijn Devolder, the Belgian Quick Step team left another mark on the Tour of Belgium by winning the last stage in the bunch sprint with Tom Boonen. The overall victory from Devolder was never under threat today, and after taking back the experienced breakaway group the Belgian team tried to set up the bunch sprint. The breakaway consisted of five riders of which three were former Belgian champions: Niko Eeckhout, Geert Omloop and also Sven Nys who won that title multiple times in cyclo-cross. The other members in the breakaway were Kenny Lisabeth and Hervé Duclos-Lasalle. The group was on the attack for 150 kilometres but with five kilometres to go their attempt was neutralized. Quick Step stretched the peloton out in a line to set up Steegmans or Boonen in the bunch sprint. While Steegmans tried to sneak away solo in the final kilometre, it turned out to be Boonen who held off young Jurgen Roelandts in a power sprint. By repeating his performance from last year – when he also won the ultimate stage - Boonen claimed his seventh victory of the season. The attack from Steegmans in the final kilometre created chaos in the organization from the other sprinters' teams. Winner Boonen didn't know why Steegmans attacked the way he did. "Looking back it turned out to be a good manoeuvre. I was a bit boxed in and lost the wheel of my team-mates," Boonen said on Sporza. "It's a difficult sprint to control over here as they keep coming from behind. I had done my part of the work this week and felt tired in a good way. Winning a power sprint anyway is good for the morale," the strong Belgian one-day specialist said. Team-mate Stijn Devolder radiated confidence after his impressive performances this week, and after his good training week in the Alps last month. For the Belgian media and public he is now carrying the hope for a good performance in the GC of the Tour de France. The Belgian champion tried to remain cool and played down expectations. "Today was a calm day, except for the last nervous lap. Eventually we took two stage wins and the overall win, so it was good. My top form hasn't been reached yet, so I certainly need the Tour de Suisse to be at my absolute top in July. I'll try to take it easy over there, because the only thing that counts is the Tour," Devolder explained to Sporza. How it unfoldedAt the start in Buggenhout 122 riders lined up for the last 185 kilometres in the Tour of Belgium. After 17 kilometres Leif Hoste was involved in a serious crash while the peloton approached the Putberg. The Belgian rode into a low wall in a narrow alley with his right leg. Hoste – fourth in GC at 2'02" from Devolder – tried to continue but eventually abandoned the race with an injury at his right shinbone. "I had to avoid a wooden pole, got stuck in a ditch and ended up against a cobbled wall a bit further. The first thing I thought was that I had broken my leg, but it turned out fine," Hoste said on Sporza. Polazzi was the first over the Putberg, followed by Nevens, Lagana and Rooijakkers. Renders and Van Mingeroet tried to get away after the Putberg, but they couldn't hold onto their lead. Not only had Hoste abandoned the race, but Ken De Vaere – who crashed badly during the second stage – and Michael Vanderaerden also called it quits. With 154 kilometres to go the first successful breakaway was formed. It consisted of Sven Nys, Geert Omloop, Niko Eeckhout, Kenny Lisabeth and Hervé Duclos-Lasalle. The five quickly gathered a lead of two minutes and they kept developing their lead up to five minutes with 138 kilometres to go. The second ascent of the Putberg was led by Eeckhout, ahead of Nys, Lisabeth and Duclos-Lasalle. It was the last climb of the stage race and Devolder was certain of the overall win in this competition. The peloton didn't allow the five leaders to keep extending their lead and Silence-Lotto and Quick Step started to work in front of the peloton. The first Nissan Rush sprint was won by former Belgian champion Geert Omloop who needed to win the next two sprints to narrowly beat Polazzi in this competition. At the second sprint, with 54 kilometres to go, Omloop confirmed that he would have a go for the jersey as he crossed the line first again. The lead from the five men was now down to three minutes, but for sure they would make it to the last Nissan Rush sprint. In the peloton the two major Belgian teams received some help from the Italian Preti Mangimi team; which had won a stage this week with Boris Shpilevsky. As the peloton entered the local circuit in Putte, with 33 kilometres to go, the lead dropped underneath two minutes. Omloop took the points in Putte and he now equalled Fabio Polazzi with 24 points. The rule book stipulates that the rider who took the last sprint in case of a draw will win the competition; so Omloop it is. Too bad for 23 year-old Polazzi that he will not take the victory, but it is a nice win for Omloop. The latter didn't receive much competition from his breakaway companions though, nor from Bodysol, the team of Polazzi. Some more teams with sprinters in their ranks – like Skil-Shimano and Cycle-Collstrop for Van Hummel and Bozic- joined the work in the peloton, and with 20 kilometres to go the gap between the five leaders and the peloton was down to 1'10". During the passage at the finish line, when there were 17 kilometres to go, the gap had dropped to 51" and it seemed as if the peloton had calculated to perfection today. Eeckhout tried a late solo attack when there were six kilometres to go, but Nys and the rest bridged back up to 'Rambo'. Lisabeth was the next to attack, but a counter-attack from Eeckhout proved to be a little more successful. With four kilometres to go everybody from the long breakaway was caught back and the sprinter teams had to finish it. With 3,5 kilometres to go a crash spoiled the chances of some sprinters who were sitting too far back. With two kilometres to go Quick Step had set up their train and Devolder led the peloton at a blistering pace for 800 metres. Other teams disturbed the organization and Gert Steegmans tried a late solo attack in the last kilometre, but he couldn't hold on to his small lead. Eventually Boonen withstood Roelandts to take the victory in the last stage, just like last year.
