Devolder outclasses competition against the clock

Stijn Devolder lived up to expectations by destroying the competition against the clock in Herzele. The 28 year-old Quick Step rider continued his domination in the Tour of Belgium, taking more than half a minute out of his nearest rivals in today's 16.8 kilometre time trial. Overnight race leader Greg Van Avermaet (Silence-Lotto) knew he didn't stand a chance against Devolder, but managed to hold second in the general classification ahead of Sergei Ivanov (Astana). Ivanov finished the time trial in third behind Jens Mouris (Mitsubishi-Jartazi), who had the fastest time for much of the day.
For Devolder it was his fourth victory of the season after two wins in the Volta ao Algarve plus the Ronde van Vlaanderen. The winner quickly recovered from his effort and explained that he wanted to test his legs today. "Yesterday was kind of a test already and of course I knew that there was a big chance that I would win the time trial," he told Sporza "Still, there are some other good time trial specialists like Leif Hoste. My form is very good and today I found the good rhythm right from the start, afterwards I managed to keep my strength.
"It's very important for me and the team," he added. "They worked hard for me all week long and I was obliged to go for the victory."
With the final stage from Buggenhout to Putte, the Tour of Belgium comes to an end tomorrow. And with a lead of 1'11 over Van Avermaet there's virtually no chance that Devolder will be forced out of the leader's jersey.

Stijn Huys was the first rider to take the start in Herzele. The 22 year-old Palmans rider was the 122nd and last rider in the general classification, 32'40 behind leader Greg Van Avermaet. His team-mate Matti Helminen managed the best time of the early starters; the Finn clocking a brisk 21'36 for the 16.8 kilometre course around Herzele, beating fellow time trial specialist Sébastien Rosseler (Quick Step) by more than 17 seconds.
Jan Kuyckx (Landbouwkrediet-Tönissteiner) - often in the breakaways this week - was also keen on a good result, but encountered mechanical problems and had to switch to a regular bike. Niko Eeckhout (Top sport Vlaanderen) didn't even bother to start with a time trial bike. Clearly not everybody was equally motivated for this time trial.
Cyclo-cross specialist Niels Albert (Palmans) showed that he has the ability to ride fast on surfaces other than mud. The 22 year-old had a good intermediate time and was inside the top-five until the favourites knocked him further down. Johan Van Summeren (Silence-Lotto) had the same time as Helminen at the intermediate split, but lost time on the Finn in the tougher second section.

Dutchman Jens Mouris was the first to beat Helminen's time, knocking 12 seconds off the Finn's mark. Astana's Tomas Vaitkus posted the fastest time after 9.7 kilometres with 11'32, but lost a lot of time in the second part and was 11 seconds slower than Mouris at the finish line and narrowly ahead of Helminen.
Some more strong times came from Carlos Barredo and Kevin Van Impe (Quick Step), Florent Brard (Cofidis) and stage two winner Boris Shpilevsky (Preti Mangimi), but none could threaten the best time of Mouris.
Local hero Staf Scheirlinckx (Cofidis) received a lot of cheers along the course, but the Belgian couldn't convert that enthusiasm into a great time and had to settle for a top-25 result.
Young Kristof Goddaert (Top sport Vlaanderen) showed he has what it takes to ride a good time trial. The 21 year-old finished ninth, only 23 seconds behind Mouris. Specialist Robert Gesink (Rabobank) couldn't match the young Belgian's time and was tenth at the intermediate check, and 27 seconds down on Mouris at the finish line.

While several riders bettered Mouris' intermediate time, few managed to convert their early pace into a top-10 result. That was until 2006 Tour of Belgium winner Maarten Tjallingii (Silence-Lotto) placed fifth, followed by Leif Hoste and a hammering Sergei Ivanov.
Hoste came close in the end, but still finished eight seconds down at the finish line. While Ivanov was going strong, it was clear one rider was steaming through the course around Herzele: Stijn Devolder destroyed the split times with 11'16 after 9.7 kilometres. Leader Van Avermaet couldn't turn himself into a time trial specialist and needed 11'58 at this point; he would be fighting for the second place overall against Ivanov.
Sergey Lagutin tried hard but disappointed with a result outside the top-10. His compatriot Ivanov came very close, but fell two seconds short of beating the time of Mouris. Soon afterwards, however, Stijn Devolder crossed the line and destroyed the previous best by 35 seconds, averaging 48 km/h on the slightly hilly course. Van Avermaet finished 1'19 down on Devolder but secured second place in the general classification ahead of Ivanov.
