Tour of Belgium - 2.1Belgium, May 28-June 1, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - May 29: Eeklo - Tienen, 201 kmShpilevsky surprises as Quick Step train failsBy Brecht Decaluwé Russian Boris Shpilevsky (Preti Mangimi) won the second stage in a bunch sprint ahead of his team-mate Marco Zanotti. Sebastian Siedler (Skil-Shimano) claimed the final podium spot in the sprint, edging out Allan Davis (Mitsubishi-Jartazi). Belgium's Quick Step ProTour team had taken control of the bunch heading towards the finish down of Tienen. Quick Step's sprint superstar Tom Boonen led out Gert Steegmans in the final kilometre, but the strong team's lead out didn't go to plan. Steegmans was forced to jump out of Boonen's wheel with 150 metres to go as Australia's Davis boxed him out. Preti Mangimi capitalized on the fall of Quick Step's train to grab an unexpected one-two. Davis finished fourth behind Siedler while Steegmans had to settle for fifth place. For 25 year-old Shpilevsky the victory was his first of the 2008 season. "Unbelievable," the second year professional told Sporza/ "It was a tough day in the rain, but this win against big names gives me an enormous satisfaction." The Italian speaking Russian continued to explain how his Tienen victory came to be. "I was lucky," he admitted. "I could take profit from the Quick Step train and managed to finish it. Normally I work for Mattia Gavazzi, but he was ill and abandoned this morning." The Russian last won in 2007 while riding for the same team - then called KIO-ENE - where he bested some big names in the Firenze-Pistoia time trial last October. He also had an impressive run in last year's Flèche du Sud, where he took two stages and the overall classification. General classification leader Kenny Dehaes (Topsport Vlaanderen) was just one of many surprised by the stage's outcome. Dehaes managed to keep the overall lead he obtained by winning yesterday's opening stage. "No, I don't know who Shpilevsky is," admitted Dehaes. "It was a chaotic sprint, with a lot of pushing and pulling and that's not my cup of tea. It's good that I can keep the jersey, because the team worked hard for it. "Maybe it would've been better if they wouldn't have done that, then they could've pulled the sprint like Quick Step did," the Belgian added. Tomorrow the peloton heads to Belgium's southern, hillier regions where the general classification contenders will have a chance to shine. One sport where overall contenders might play a card is at the Mur de Huy, the climb where the Flèche Wallonne has its finish each year. Shpilevsky now holds second place on general classification, but is an unknown quantity when it comes to climbing. "I'm an allrounder," Shpilevksy said to Sport.be. "I don't 'know if I'm eligible for the overall win, but tomorrow's queen stage will be all important for the general classification. "I'm curious to find out how the legs and head will feel tomorrow morning," the Russian laughed. "Now I want to keep becoming stronger at Preti Magimi and then I want to move up to a bigger squad; Tinkoff would be great." How it unfoldedThe start in Eeklo was quick, with a high pace established as a lot of breakaway attempts were launched. After 25 kilometres a high quality group of seven riders jumped away. The group featured names like Tom Boonen (Quick Step), Johan Van Summeren (Silence - Lotto), Niko Eeckhout (Topsport Vlaanderen), Kevin Van Impe (Quick Step), Geert Omloop (Mitsubishi-Jartazi), Thomas Ongena (Profel Prorace Continental Team) and Roberto Ferrari (LPR Brakes). Six more riders join the escape, but the peloton couldn't let the 13 riders go as the group featured too many big names. Proving the peloton's pace, the average speed after the first hour was a blistering 48.1 km/h. Two riders jumped away with 150 kilometres remaining and the peloton allowed the pair to go down the road. Roy Curvers (Skil-Shimano) and Fabio Polazzi (Bodysol - Euro Millions - Pôle Continental Wallon) quickly built up a lead over the peloton and within 20 kilometres from their initial departure they had over five minutes on the peloton as the race reached the famous Muur in Geraardsbergen - known from the Tour of Flanders. Curvers was first over the climb ahead of Polazzi, followed by Jan Kuyckx (Landbouwkrediet - Tönissteiner) and Philipp Walsleben (Palmans Cras). Straight after the climb two Belgians went on the counter-attack. Johan Coenen (Topsport Vlaanderen) and Staf Scheirlinckx (Cofidis - Le Crédit par Téléphone) rode between the lead duo and the peloton for a while, but right after the second climb they were reeled back in. Curvers was the first over the Bosberg climb before repeating his efforts at the Congoberg climb, with 119 kilometres of racing remaining. His efforts ensured Curvers would claim the mountains jersey at day's end. Some 20 kilometres later Polazzi won the first Nissan Rush sprint from Curvers, with Greg Van Avermaet (Silence - Lotto) claiming third spot seven minutes later. As the peloton hit the sprint Boris Shpilevsky attacked his rivals in the main bunch. The Russian took about one minute on the peloton but was taken back 15 kilometres later. Topsport Vlaanderen, the team of general classification leader Kenny Dehaes, took control of the peloton with 60 kilometres remaining which saw the leaders' margin begin to reduce. Polazzi took the bonus seconds at the second Nissan Rush sprint, making him virtual leader of the classification. The lead from Curvers and Polazzi had reduced to less than five minutes just 10 kilometres later, considerably down on their maximum advantage of 8.20 minutes. With 30 kilometres to go Polazzi took the third Nissan Rush before Curvers, while Van Avermaet again picked up third place at the front of the peloton 3.30 minutes behind. As the riders passed the finish line in Tienen for the first time they were getting ready for a lucrative Super Sprint; again it was Polazzi who proved to be the fastest of the two, taking the 2000 Euro prize that came with it. The co-operation up front finished following this sprint as the peloton closed on the leader's heels. Jan Kuyckx (Landbouwkrediet - Tönissteiner) jumped away from the peloton with 20 kilometres to go, but the Belgian was quickly brought back. The two leaders were caught just five kilometres later. Kuyckx tried his luck another two times, but the sprinter's teams didn't allow him any space to get away. The peloton had to ride underneath a small and narrow bridge with nine kilometres to go causing problems for the bunch. While the head of the peloton had no problems getting through, riders at the back were forced to brake, with some riders even having to put a foot on the ground. With three kilometres to go there was an awful crash involving Ken De Vaere (Davitamon - Lotto - Jong Vlaanderen). The young Belgian was forced off the road and barely avoided crashing into a parked car, but then hit a fence before ending up on the ground. Miraculously he was able to continue and finish the race. The peloton was flying as the finish neared and it was Quick Step which did most of the work, together with LPR Brakes. Belgian champion Stijn Devolder (Quick Step) led the peloton until the last kilometre, when team-mate Boonen led out Gert Steegmans down the right hand side of the road. Unfortunately for Quick Step Steegmans waited too long to start his sprint and Allan Davis (Mitsubishi-Jartazi) swerved over from the middle to the right, boxing in Steegmans. The Australian was marked by Shpilevsky and the Russian stood tall as he took his first victory of the season.
