Tour of Belgium - 2.1Belgium, May 28-June 1, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Stage 1 - May 28: Eeklo - Eeklo, 180.5 kmDehaes fast as a hareBy Brecht Decaluwé Belgian's newest sprint ace Kenny Dehaes (Topsport Vlaanderen) won the bunch sprint in first stage of the Tour of Belgium in a convincing fashion. The first stage of the Tour of Belgium was coloured by the formation of echelons during the second hour of the race, and then a long breakaway effort from the trio David Boucher, Sergio Lagana and local rider Steven De Neef. With seven kilometres to go they were caught back due to the work of the sprinters' teams. In a disorganized final kilometre, the 23 year-old Dehaes overtook Australian Allan Davis (Mistubishi) just before the corner with 300 metres to go. The slim Belgian sprinter stood tall and allowed nobody to return, taking the stage and the first leader's jersey of the Tour. Davis held on for second place ahead of Quickstep's Gert Steegmans. Dehaes pulled a string of strong results recently with a great bunch sprint victory over Thor Hushovd in Dunkerque as crowning glory. Today Dehaes - whose name means 'a hare' in Flemish - seemed to have no difficulty at all to capture the victory, as he was freewheeling and lifting his hands in the air way ahead of the finish line. "This is really fantastic," Dehaes said to Sporza. "The wind made it a hard stage, but the team worked hard for me. Niko Eeckhout delivered me at one kilometre from the finish," Dehaes explained. "In the build-up to the sprint Walter Planckaert [director sportif] told me to keep an eye on David. When he started the sprint I followed his wheel. I knew Boonen wouldn't sprint today. Steegmans had to do it, but Quick Step didn't get their train on the rails," Dehaes talked about the sprint. "This Tour of Belgium is already successful for me." Tomorrow Dehaes can have another shot for glory, but from then on the riders with climbing power in the legs will take it over from the sprinters. How it unfoldedA peloton of 142 riders took the start in Eeklo for a loop around Gent and then back towards Eeklo, totalling 180.5 kilometres on a flat course. Tom Criel, Sep Vanmarcke and Daniel Lloyd were the first riders to get away from the peloton, but the trio wasn't allowed to get very far and after 14 kilometres they were caught back by the peloton. Six kilometres further another rider attacked. The French breakaway specialist David Boucher (Landbouwkrediet-Tönisteiner) wasn't joined by anyone, and a couple of kilometres further his lead was already up to one minute. Due to a crash in the peloton, the chase on Boucher was set on pause for a moment. After 40 kilometres there was another crash from Berik Kupeshov (Astana). The Astana rider ran into a signal man. He would continue but then abandon the race with 75 kilometres to go. With the peloton on hold, the first Nissan intermediate sprint after 41 kilometres was won by Boucher. In the peloton it was Tomas Vaitkus (Astana) who took the next of the sprint points ahead of Kenny Van Hummel (Skil-Shimano) and Tom Boonen. The speeds remained high and despite the average of 45 km/h two riders managed to join Boucher up front: Chris Horner and Tom Criel. Soon after those two made the juncture, Niek Van Gestel (Profel) closed the gap on his own and joined the three leaders as well. The advantage of the four riders fell, and after 48 kilometres Boucher and Van Gestel were caught by the peloton, while Horner and Criel jumped away just before the group was caught. Three kilometres further this duo was caught as well and the peloton was back together for a moment. Echelons were formed against the strong winds and a lot of riders were in trouble at the back. After 60 kilometres a group of forty riders were distanced by the peloton at 30". The race was full on at this stage and the peloton had shattered into several groups. Belgian champion Stijn Devolder was distanced as well, but after 75 kilometres his group managed to move back towards the front. Five kilometres further the battle was over and everybody was back in the peloton, except for 12 riders who were more than two minutes behind. The average speed after two hours in the race was a blistering 46 km/h, and still a group riders tried to get away with 87 kilometres to go: Vaitkus, Kevin Hulsmans, Wim De Vocht, David Boucher, Kevin Neirynck, Sven Renders, Floris Goesinnen, Tom Veelers, Borut Bozic, Bas Giling, Jarno Van Mingeroet, Jens Mouris and Proch. This big group built up a lead of twenty seconds, but the peloton closed down the move four kilometres later. The peloton had enough of the attacks, and called for a sanitary break. That was the sign for three riders to jump away, and peloton allowed the break to go and finally a cease-fire was achieved. Nineteen riders who were dropped earlier were happy as they could join the peloton again. The lead group consisted – unsurprisingly – of Boucher, together with the Italian Sergio Lagana and Belgian track specialist Steven De Neef. The co-operation up front was good and the trio started to build up a safe lead. Chris Horner – in the earlier attack – abandoned the race at the first feed zone. At the second intermediate sprint, it was Lagana who finished first before Boucher and De Neef. Seven minutes later it was Carlos Barredo who led the peloton past the line of the sprint, with 70 kilometres to go. The maximum lead of the trio went up to 7'20". Under impulse of the Quick Step team the advantage of the leaders started to fall. The Belgian team was joined by the Skil-Shimano team, and just before the third intermediate sprint, 36 kilometres from the finish, the lead dropped back to three minutes. De Neef won the sprint ahead of Lagana and Boucher. With 32 kilometres to go the Topsport Vlaanderen team joined the work in the peloton and a lot of riders were in trouble at the back. Among them were Sergey Lagutin and Michiel Elijzen. It was clear the lead trio wouldn't make it today as with 15 kilometres to go they were only one minute ahead of the peloton. Finally at seven kilometres from the finish their adventure was over. In the final kilometre there was a late attack from Jan Kuyckx (Landbouwkrediet-Tönisteiner), but the Silenco-Lotto train quickly caught the Belgian. Despite the Belgian team's efforts they lost the lead to Astana, for Vaitkus, but with 500 metres to go no team had control over the peloton. Allan Davis started the sprint before a slight corner with 300 metres to go, but Kenny Dehaes overtook him just before they hit the corner. The Belgian had no trouble at all to maintain his position and claimed the victory in Eeklo.
