24th Tour de l'Aude - 2.2France, May 16-25, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 9 - May 25: Limoux – Limoux, 71 kmArndt rains supreme in wet finaleGerman wins disputed sprint; Ljungskog confirmed as race winnerBy Ben Atkins in Limoux High Road team leader Judith Arndt took her team's third victory of this year's Tour de l'Aude by outsprinting her three breakaway companions in a rainy final stage at Limoux. The German former World champion proved the fastest from an echapee royale made up of the race's four favourites: race leader Susanne Ljungskog (Menikini-Selle Italia), Nicole Cooke (Great Britain) and Trixie Worrack (Nürnberger Versicherung). Cooke officially contested the result with the race's commissaires, claiming that Arndt had moved off her line, but the head of the race jury who had been right behind the incident ruled that Arndt had kept to a straight line and it was the narrowing finishing straight that made Arndt get closer to the barriers. The four had escaped on the main obstacle of the day, the first category Côte de Villardebelle halfway through the stage as Worrack attacked. The Nürnberger Versicherung leader was still angry at having lost her third place to Irene Van Den Broek (AA Drink) on the stage at Castelnaudary and this attack was intended to take back at least the six seconds that she needed. She was quickly followed by the other three but crucially not Van Den Broek and continued to apply the pressure right to the finish. The next group of eleven riders arrived at the finish line 59 seconds later, led by DSB Bank sprinter Angela Brodtka. In this group was Van Den Broek, who saw her third place slip away as both Worrack and Cooke overtook her. "I think I'm having a good season so far," said Arndt to Cyclingnews, "but if you don't do good at the Olympics, the whole season was s**t, so I hope I do a good race there if I get nominated. "Hey, but I'm not too happy about today," she continued, "because it doesn't feel to good to win like this, when somebody does protest and everything. Then I'd rather I don't win." Rather than work to keep the breakaway away which would have done her no good as all of her adversaries were in the group with her Arndt acted in the interests of High Road team-mate Ina Teutenberg, the holder of the green points jersey. She decided not to work in the hope that they might be pulled back in so that Teutenberg cold win the stage and keep the jersey. This tactic was unsuccessful though and despite Arndt victory Ljungskog's second place and Brodtka's fifth were enough for both riders to overtake Teutenberg in the points classification. The German who was third behind the High Road super-sprinter yesterday took the jersey. "We tried to defend the green jersey today," she explained, "that's why I didn't work in the breakaway because it wasn't good for us but I think we were not strong enough to defend the green jersey." "It was good because it was raining and I like this a lot," a delighted Trixie Worrack told Cyclingnews. "I think I have [taken third place from Irene Van Den Broek], because it was only about six or eight seconds." In fact, the 59 second gap that the foursome pulled out over the riders behind was more than enough to get the former German champion back onto the podium she'd been pushed off the day before, and also for Cooke to move up to fourth. "A little bit [disappointed] of course," Irene Van Den Broek said, "for me it was really good third place it was unbelievable, but fifth place: I'm satisfied with this. They were better, I went after Trixie the whole time, but she was just stronger, so I have to be satisfied with this. "They are the best those four so they deserve the best four places!" she laughed. Once the attack containing the favourites had gone thought, the young Dutchwoman never lost hope that they might et be pulled back due to the differing interests of the four riders. "I hoped that Arndt and Ljungskog didn't really want to ride with Cooke and Worrack" she explained, "and we were chasing behind them but it was not enough." For Claudia Hausler Worrack's Nürnberger Versicherung team-mate victory in the pink young rider's competition was sweet, but also whetted the young German's appetite for more victory. "It's always nice to win something," she smiled, "so I'm happy about this. It's the last year I can win this, and the next time I want to win something I think." For Hausler, and the Nürnberger Versicherung team, more important was the success in Worrack regaining that third place that she so unexpectedly lost two days ago. "We are really happy about this," she enthused, "because we were sad two days before because we didn't really realise that she's losing her place so we are really happy to get this back!" The next big stage race for Hausler is the Giro d'Italia in early July, but personal glory may well be put to one side in favour of the team. "We will see," she explained, "we have to defend the victory from Edita, so this is very important for us." Race winner Susanne Ljungskog can finally relax as she now keeps the jersey she has held since stage four's finish in Osseja, almost a week ago. "Feels very good, I'm happy and I feel a little bit tired now!" she smiled. With a virtually unassailable led going in to the final stage, Ljungskog had just one last attack to deal with from her main adversaries. "On the second climb, Trixie [Worrack] attacked and Judith [Arndt] was on her wheel," she explained, "and I was after. In the last 800 metres I knew it was really steep so I thought it was better that I make an attack because it's going down and I know Trixie is really good when it's raining, so it's better to have a gap there. I make an attack and I had [Nicole] Cooke on my wheel and we went together in the downhill but then Trixie and Judith came back and then Trixie went because she wanted third place overall." With nothing to gain for either Arndt or Ljungskog they already held the first two places in the overall neither rider contributed much to the pace of the breakaway. "We just sat on Trixie's wheel and had a nice time, enjoying," she added with a laugh. Having recently moved from the Flexpoint team to Menikini-Selle Italia, Ljungskog has had to get used to a new group of riders. She paid tribute to their efforts in helping her to secure her second successive Tour de l'Aude victory. "I think my team was doing a really, really good job," she said, "so I didn't have to do so much on my own. Of course it always takes a lot of energy to have the jersey, but I'm always thankful for my team." She later contacted Cyclingnews to specifically single out Australian Commonwealth champion Nathalie Bates as the rider who did the best job for her these last ten days. With Ljungskog's main goals this season coming later, an emphatic victory such as this may be seen as peaking a bit too early. For Ljungskog though, the result comes simply as a morale boost on the long road towards those objectives. "I don't think I'm too good," she said, "because now I'm going home to take it easy for some days, and I will not be too happy about this because I knew that this was just a big bonus. "I want to be the winner the Giro and I want to make a good Olympics, and for sure I want to be World champion again. That's my really big goal. This victory is very nice, but I have to be focused on the rest of the season." How it unfoldedEighty-six riders from 18 teams took the start on the town of Limoux, to the South of Carcasonne. The rain that had been threatening for the past few days finally came to the Tour de l'Aude and after a wet morning, the stage began under heavy skies. Sadly the race was to start without prologue winner Katie Mactier (Australia) who had abandoned yesterday's stage along with Charlotte Becker (Nürnberger Versicherung) and Magali le Floch (France). Not starting this morning was Susanne Ljungskog's Menikini-Selle Italia team-mate Sigrid Corneo. The first 19km contained two sprints, the first was taken by current red jersey holder Monica Holler (Bigla) and the second by Elodie Touffet (Gauss RDZ Ormu) the only rider capable of denying Holler the title. The second sprint served as a springboard for yet another attack from yesterday's second place Sara Carrigan (Lotto Belisol). She escaped the peloton alone and crossed the top of the second category Col du Pas de la Crousette alone. After a false flat, the climb to the first category Côte de Villardebelle Trixi Worrack (Nürnberger Versicherung) attacked the peloton and was quickly followed by Nicole Cooke (Great Britain), Judith Arndt (High Road) and race leader Susanne Ljungskog (Menikini-Selle Italia). On the descent back towards the start/finish town of Limoux, the four worked together with by far the lion's share being done by Worrack and they quickly opened a gap on the rest of the field. Crucially, current third placed Irene Van Den Broek (AA Drink) had missed the split and her slender six second lead over Worrack looked very precarious as the four pulled away. On the flat run in to the finish the gap from the four leaders was over a minute and it was clear that the stage winner would come from this group. As they entered the finishing straight Arndt led out her sprint close to the right side of the road and Cooke tried to come around her on the right side. In the final metres Cooke sat up and shouted at Arndt, feeling that the German had moved off her line towards the barriers on the right. This slowing allowed Ljungskog to come past on the line to take second behind the High Road rider. Worrack, exhausted from doing most of the work, finished fourth. The next group arrived at the line 59 seconds later with the sprint for fifth taken by Angela Brodtka (DSB Bank). The group also contained Van Den Broek who had now lost her third place to Worrack, and also been overtaken by Cooke in the overall classification. Brodtka's fifth place and Ljungskog's second gave them the points they needed to overtake Ina Teutenberg (High Road) in the points classification, with the DSB Bank rider taking the jersey. Also finishing in the second group was Claudia Hausler (Nürnberger Versicherung) who wins the pink jersey for young riders; Holler successfully held off Touffet to take the red sprints jersey; Arndt had already secured the mountains title and by finishing alongside her nearest rivals Ljungskog secures her second successive Tour de l'Aude yellow.
