24th Tour de l'Aude - 2.2France, May 16-25, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 8 - May 24: Bram - Bram , 116 kmTwo-tenberg strikes again!Second victory for High Road sprinter; Ljungskog enjoying yellowBy Ben Atkins in Bram Team High Road powerhouse Ina Teutenberg showed that anything Zulfia Zabirova (Bigla) can do, she can do better with victory in the 2008 Tour de l'Aude's first bunch sprint in the small town of Bram. The German sprinter powered up the centre of the road in pursuit of Olympic champion Sara Carrigan (Lotto Belisol) who had started her sprint with 200m to go. Teutenberg managed to beat Carrigan by around half a wheel with Angela Brodtka taking a close third. Teutenberg led home a group of 37 riders, which included all of the overall contenders, but the sprint finish was by no means a certainty as strong attacks from the DSB Bank and Bigla teams in the final 10km forced the High Road team to work hard for the victory. The stage was dominated by a solo attack from Adrie Visser (DSB Bank) who was smarting at having missed out on victory in yesterday's stage at Castelnaudary, where she had only just been able to follow the wheel of Zulfia Zabirova (Bigla) as she rode away to victory. Visser managed to build a maximum lead of more than two and a half minutes before accelerations within the group of overall contenders and an untimely puncture saw her caught with 20km to the finish. "I was a bit lucky," said Teutenberg to Cyclingnews after the finish, "Carrigan closed the right side so the sprint on that side was blocked and I had a free run to the line. It was a bit tricky, it didn't look like it before the race, but the little chicane made it a bit tricky." The pace of the stage itself, especially on the day's major obstacle the first category Col de la Malapère was such that it put paid to the chances of a lot of the peloton's fast finishers. Teutenberg though managed to stay in: "I was pretty tired," she admitted. "I pretty much kicked my butt up that last hill trying to stay in front group, which was good that I did because that other group didn't make it back. We were very quick, but I didn't do anything else all day. "It was a pretty power climb, so they go fast but it's probably easier for the sprinters to get up a hill like this than if it's longer, and 5km long." In the flat run in to the finish, things were far form simple and a sprint finish far from inevitable as a series of attacks had to be chased down. Teutenberg though had the services of one of the strongest riders in the race for this. "Judith [Arndt] pretty much closed everything single-handedly in the last 5km. Linda [Villumsen] helped at the start a little bit, but then she faded a bit, and then Judith covered Bigla who were probably the most active there at the end. Then I just had to make my position and find my way in the sprint." Sara Carrigan had been one of the more active riders in the early kilometres of the race, trying to escape the peloton on more than one occasion. She still managed to find the energy to muster a fast sprint that Teutenberg could only just overhaul. "I took off with 200 to go and Ina just came over me with half a wheel length in the end," explained the Olympic champion. "Bit of a b****r, but I'm happy. I've been feeling better and better as the Tour goes on; for me this year it's been a bit of a confidence-gaining thing. I've really gained a lot of confidence in the Tour, which is really good. I think it's been more of a head thing for me this year that physical." Despite being almost 25 minutes behind Ljungskog in the overall classification, early attacks from Carrigan were pulled back. Something she couldn't quite understand. "It's been really weird this Tour," she continued, "things have been chased down that don't really need to be, and things that should have been chased down say like the break yesterday with Irene Van Den Broek who's now third overall, it was really weird." "You know, you've got to try, and if you don't try: at the end I always feel worse than not trying," she smiled. Angela Brodtka (DSB Bank) finished third behind Teutenberg and Carrigan, and adds this result to her second place behind Zabirova into Lezignan Corbières. The German sprinter is still positive that the team can go one better before the race is over. "We still have one day, so I think we can take the win," she told Cyclingnews optimistically, "but I think we did the team really good today, we had maybe four times one girl on the front and it looks really good, but the other girls closed the gap. I was still there for the sprint, and I tried to beat Ina but she is really strong so she won again. That's okay." DSB Bank is used to organising sprints usually for former World champion Marianne Vos, who isn't at this race this year but instead the team chose to attack in the closing kilometres and force others to chase. "She [Sharon Van Essen] attacked in the last 10km so it was really good for us," explained Brodtka, "We didn't need to make a train or something, we just had to take a look and she was caught back in the last 3km or something." Before the final run in to the finish in Bram, the stage had been dominated by Adrie Visser's solo attack. Ultimately, bad luck and an accelerating peloton meant that her day's effort was to no avail and she was caught and finished in the second group 5'11" behind Teutenberg. "They caught me 20 from the finish, I think," the 2007 Ronde Van Drenthe winner told Cyclingnews. "I got a flat tyre on the top of the hill, I thought they gave me [a gap of] 1'25", and then I did the descent an I think I got a stone or something and then I thought it's flat and then I wait and then: 'yeah, it's flat', and I stopped on the descent, but the man on the moto was so bad, he was so slow." After suffering a puncture, Visser's chances of victory were all but over, but her presence in the lead meant that the rest of her team-mates could continue to sit in the bunch and get ready for the finish. "Then I get [told that the gap is] 26 seconds, and then I'm only chasing for the team because we have Angela there and maybe she could win the peloton sprint," she explained. "Then they don't have all the attacks for 20km from the finish. And then Sharon attacked and she had 5km for the finish, but I think we did it for the team; we did it really well. "I'm only a bit sad for me, because it was a good escape," she smiled. "I was a little p***ed from the day before [when she couldn't quite manage to go with Zabiriva]. I was good that day and now I want to do it better. "It was just angry," she laughed, "I said it in the beginning, I'll survive the first hill then I try, so I did!" For Susanne Ljungskog, this was a relatively quiet day: "After the second climb there were attacks," the race leader told Cyclingnews, "but that was after 70 kilometres so no worries. I had my team before that, so only 40km alone so that was okay. There were attacks but " "The legs seem to be very, very good, so I'm still enjoying this race!" she laughed. Ljungskog now just has one more stage to enjoy in this year's Tour de l'Aude before she can be crowned the winner for the second consecutive year. Tomorrow's final stage covers just 71km in Limoux to the south of Carcassonne, the race will be no procession though, as it still takes in one second category and one first category climb before the finish. How it unfolded90 riders from 18 teams took the start in Bram, just to the west of Carcassonne under cloudy skies. The morning's rain thankfully cleared and although the roads were wet in the first few kilometres of the race, they soon dried as the skies cleared. The race started without Olga Slyvisareva (Menikini - Selle Italia) and Marina Duvnjak (Swift Racing) who didn't finish yesterday's stage and Emma Pooley (Great Britain), Nadezda Vlasova (Fenixs) and Gabby Day (Swift Racing) who finished outside the 15% time limit. The high speed set saw the peloton cover 39km in the first hour this despite the inclusion of the second category Côte de Fanjeaux after just 9km. Despite the fast pace, several attempts were made to breakaway from the peloton, most notably from Sara Carrigan (Lotto Belisol), but none were allowed to succeed. After 40km, Adrie Visser (DSB Bank) who had been part of the breakaway in yesterday's stage to Castenaudary escaped the peloton and began building a lead. By the foot of the climb to the first category Col de la Malpère with just over 40km remaining Visser's lead had grown to almost 3 minutes. An increase in pace in the main peloton mainly to put pressure on each other than to catch Visser meant that by the summit her lead had been cut to around a minute and an untimely puncture for Visser cost her further time and she was caught with around 20km to go. Attacks in the final 10km by Visser's DSB Bank team-mate Sharon Van Essen and the Bigla duo of Noemi Cantele and Zulfia Zabirova were cancelled out by High Road, notably overall second placed Judith Arndt. The front group reduced to 37 by the pace on the final climb arrived inside the final 4km together and the high pace meant that this year's Tour de l'Aude's first sprint was inevitable. Carrigan opened her sprint with 200m to go, but Teutenberg proved to be the strongest and overhauled the Australian on the line. Visser's and Van Essen's DSB Bank team-mate Angel Brodtka came in third. All of the overall leaders finished in the front group, which means that Susanne Ljungskog keeps the yellow jersey and her 3'39" lead over Arndt going into tomorrow's final stage.
