24th Tour de l'Aude - 2.2France, May 16-25, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - May 22: Rennes Les Bains - Axat, 117 kmWhitelaw lays down the LawsAussie takes breakaway win; Ljungskog attacked but holds onBy Ben Atkins in Axat Vicki Whitelaw (Australia) has taken her team's second win of this year's Tour de l'Aude - after Katie Mactier's prologue victory - by beating old friend Sharon Laws (Great Britain) and Regina Bruins (Netherlands) in a three woman sprint. Ten kilometres earlier, Whitelaw had bridged up to the two others, who had already been away for almost 30 kilometres. As the trio approached the uphill drag to the finish line in Axat, Bruins faded and Whitelaw proved the fresher of the other two riders, beating Laws by several lengths on the line. Lithuanian former world champion Edita Pucinskaite (Nürnberger Versicherung) slipped clear with six kilometres to go, and although she managed to finish clear of the peloton, she was unable to catch the leaders. "There was a bit of a lull in the bunch and my director Nico said 'if you want to go, go now'," explained Whitelaw to Cyclingnews. "I'd been chasing all the way down the descent with a group of six, and I was like 'yeah, I'll just go'. When you're feeling weakest, you just pull out an attack! "I bridged across and I was just reeling them in, nice and slowly, not trying to blow myself up," she continued. "I was told I should attack them, but I didn't have the legs for that so I though we'll carry all three of us to the line and backed myself for the sprint." Because stage six is the only stage in this year's Tour de l'Aude that does not finish at the point that it started, many riders had no idea what to expect in the final metres of the race, Whitelaw included. "I had no idea what the sprint was like," she went on, "I hadn't really checked out the profile that much - because I wasn't really expecting a stage win! I was asking the director 'what's the sprint like?' and he said 'don't sprint too early' so I figured 'okay'. He was giving me a k to go when I saw 500 metres on the road and I'm thinking my best power comes from a long sprint - I'm not a short distance sprinter - so I gave it a fairly long sprint at about 400, up the hill." That long sprint proved to be just enough to beat old friend and adversary Sharon Laws, who had been off the front of the peloton since the descent of the final climb with around 40 kilometres to go. This proved at last to be a successful attempt to escape the peloton after may earlier attempts. "I just wanted to see what I could do really," Laws told Cyclingnews. "I didn't attack on the second climb and was a bit frustrated with myself that I hadn't, but I just wanted to make sure that I could get enough of a gap. I tried once on the last climb, and then went with Ljungskog when she attacked, in the hope that that would stay away - and that still didn't work. "Then, after there had been some attacks on the descent, Julian [Winn, GB Director] said to keep it up, so I thought I'd go and I must admit I didn't think it would stay away. Luckily there was a big Dutch girl! [Regina Bruins (Netherlands)] So we just worked together. "I still wasn't convinced it was going to stay away. It was just when Vicki [Whitelaw] caught us up - I know Vicki from Australia - that she'd be keen on the win, and that she'd work." For the second day in succession (after Ina Teutenberg (High Road) pulled an exhausted Charlotte Becker (Nürnberger Versicherung) to the line on stage five), a breakaway rider found herself too exhausted to contribute. "Then coming into the finish," said Laws, "the Dutch girl stopped working; I couldn't work out if she was going to come past us at the end or whether she was getting tired. "It was a good day," she smiled. "I knew today had to be my day if I was going to do anything, because of the climbing. I've beaten her in the hills before," she said of old friend Whitelaw, "but not in a sprint finish. I must admit, I missed the one k marker, so it was a bit closer than I thought it was." Before Laws and Bruins - and later Whitelaw - had finally escaped the clutches of the fast moving peloton, the day had been marked by a series of attacks and counterattacks from the leaders in the overall classification. A succession of attacks from most of her rivals over the three first category climbs made this the hardest day so far for race leader Susanne Ljungskog (Menikini-Selle Italia), as she explained to Cyclingnews: "There was a lot of attacks from Judith [Arndt (High Road)], and Trixie [Worrack (Nürnberger Versicherung)] and [Nicole] Cooke [Great Britain], and everybody, and so I can feel my legs now!" exclaimed the Swedish rider. "The first [climb] was pretty hard, but not that bad. I tried to attack in the last one, and I had a gap, because I think it's more easy to be alone than to take the attacks. But they catch me... But I try..." Ljungskog will have to defend against attacks from these same riders for a further three stages, starting with tomorrow's rolling 108km in Castelnaudary to the west of the Aude capital Carcassonne. How it unfoldedNinety eight riders from 18 teams took the start from Rennes les Bains under partly cloudy skies. Rain in the morning had made conditions far from ideal, but the weather had cleared up and riders could expect to stay mostly dry - save from a few showers - throughout the race. Amanda Spratt (Australia) and Emilie Blanquefort (France) didn't start the stage. Almost immediately the climb began to the first category Col de Valmigère, the high pace caused a number of groups to be dropped from the back of the peloton, but all of the main contenders crossed the summit together. On the descent many of those dropped managed to regain contact, but after a while a group of three riders broke clear: former world cyclo-cross champion Maryline Salvetat, Olympic champion Sara Carrigan (Lotto Belisol) and Erinne Willock (Webcor Builders). The three were not allowed to get very far though and were reeled in before the second climb by a combined chase from High Road and Nürnberger Versicherung. Just as the second climb - the first category Col de la Fage - began, an attack came from German champion Luise Keller (High Road) who has seemingly recovered from her crash on stage three. Keller's attack was quickly reeled in by the peloton and the entire Nürnberger Versicherung team began to wind up the pace for the benefit of team leaders Trixie Worrack and Claudia Hausler. As the main group approached the summit the overall contenders attempted to put maillot jaune Susanne Ljungskog (Menikini-Selle Italia) into difficulty with a series of attacks, but all were reeled back by the Swedish former world champion. Almost as soon as the descent was over, the ascent to the final climb of the day - the first category Col du Paradis - began. In order to pre-empt the attacks of others, Ljungskog put in an attack of her own. She was joined by a number of others, including Sharon Laws (Great Britain), but this was soon reeled in by the other favourites. On the steep descent that followed, Laws managed to escape with former Dutch time trial champion Regina Bruins with around 40km remaining. The two worked together to build a small lead over the rest of the bunch. With around 15km to go, with Laws' and Bruins' lead at around 40 seconds, Vicki Whitelaw (Australia) escaped the bunch during a brief slowing of pace. Over the next five kilometres she managed to steadily reel in the leading pair and joined them with around 10km to go. Together - with the fresher legs of Whitelaw - the three increased their lead to over a minute, with the main contenders behind seemingly willing to let them go. With six kilometres remaining former world champion Edita Pucinskaite (Nürnberger Versicherung) attacked the main field in a late attempt to bridge to the three leaders. Ultimately Pucinskaite's effort was too late, however, and the three escapees entered the uphill 500 metre finishing straight together with a healthy lead over the Lithuanian. As the sprint began, Bruins faded quickly and it was a head-to-head contest between Laws and Whitelaw - a repeat of many past encounters. Ultimately, Laws was no match for the slightly fresher Whitelaw, and the Australian took the victory a few lengths clear of the Briton. Bruins followed in third place six seconds back. After a gap of 36 seconds, Pucinskaite crossed the line to take fourth on the stage. She was followed by the main field seven seconds later as Tina Liebig took fifth place.
