24th Tour de l'Aude - 2.2France, May 16-25, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - May 21: Toulouges - Toulouges , 112 kmTeutenberg takes one for the RoadGerman sprinter wins breakaway stage; overall unchangedBy Ben Atkins in Toulouges German super-sprinter Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (High Road) won stage five of the Tour de l'Aude after a 50-kilometre breakaway with compatriot Charlotte Becker (Nürnberger Versicherung). The pair broke away on the technical descent from the second climb of the day – the second category Col Fourtou – and they managed to stay away to the finish, despite the efforts of the rest of the peloton, led in the later stages by the DSB Bank team. After building up a maximum lead of around two minutes and forty seconds, the German pair saw their advantage reduced to just a handful of seconds by the final kilometres. As Teutenberg took what proved in the end to be a simple victory over an exhausted Becker, Monica Holler (Bigla) led the rest home in almost the same time. "I think we were lucky because I think DSB kind of lost everybody," a breathless Teutenberg told Cyclingnews after her victory. "At three K we had to go up this little bridge so I think they kind of lost their train. At two K to go they were nearly on us, and then all of a sudden I guess they stopped again with a kilometre to go." "I had to pull the last two kilometres," she explained, "so I was worried Charlotte [Becker] would outsprint me, but she was just really tired , too." In the end, Becker was too tired to put up much resistance and Teutenberg won an almost uncontested sprint against her compatriot. "[We attacked] just after the second mountaintop, on the downhill," she continued. "There were constant attacks and then there was a lull in between and we kind of got the gap. That was perfect, really. We did everything we could, luckily we just [held] on at the end." At no point during their breakaway did the pair's advantage reach an insurmountable margin, and with a concerted chase from an organised team it reduced rapidly to the point where they surely should have been caught. "I think [the gap went up to] 2'40," said Teutenberg, "but then DSB started chasing and it came down pretty consistently in the last 30 kilometres. "I think my cold has gone!" she added with a laugh. Dutch rider Adrie Visser (DSB Bank) described the team's chase to Cyclingnews and the reasons for its ultimate failure. "With 10 kilometres to go we heard it was just 30 seconds, so we decided to close the gap," said the winner of the 2007 Ronde van Drenthe, "only the sprint girls made a bit of a fault… so we just had one for the last 700 metres. Then the whole peloton took over…" Once the rest of the peloton had come past, the DSB Bank team found itself swamped and Angela Brodtka was beaten to the line by Bigla's punchy sprinter Monica Holler. "Otherwise I think we'd close the gap," she said of the final kilometre mix up that so disrupted the team's chase. "Work for nothing!" she said with a philosophical smile. "Yes, it was a good day," stated maillot jaune Susanne Ljungskog of her first day in yellow. "It was a fast day. There was a lot of attacks from the girls, and it was quite hard." A hard day chasing her rivals has emphasised to the former two-time World champion that, despite holding a lead of more than three and a half minutes over her nearest rival Judith Arndt (High Road), the race is far from won. "[They attacked] a lot," she continued, "so it's going to be a hard four days, I have to watch out." Ever optimistic, Amber Neben (United States) was on the attack again, both to try to make up time on Ljungskog and maybe to make up a few places in the overall classification. "There's a few people in front of me [in the general classification] and then a bigger gap," she explained, "so I don't know, I was just looking for opportunities. I figured people would be a little bit tired from yesterday; you know what: you never know, so you give it a try." "I got away but then Susanne [Ljungskog] came up," continued the 2005 and 2006 winner, "it was probably in the last 25k, there was a little climb we had – it was on that. Sharon Laws was there and [Nicole] Cooke and an AA Drink [rider] so we rode a little bit, but it was chased back – I'm not sure who chased it back. But, give it a go," she smiled. "I think we still try to win the Tour," a determined Judith Arndt told Cyclingnews after the stage. "I think every day is good, but I think the longer we wait the more tired Ljungskog will be." With everybody on overall contention finishing in the same time, the general classification remained unchanged at the top. Ljungskog will once again have to defend the maillot jaune against her rivals in tomorrow's stage over three first category climbs between Rennes les Bains and Axat – the only stage in this year's race that finishes in a different place to where it started. How it unfolded100 riders from 18 teams took the start in Toulouges to the west of Perpignan under almost cloudless skies. The wind that has had such a huge part to play in the earlier stages had thankfully all but disappeared. The field was sadly without Brooke Miller of the United States National Team and Florence Girardet of the French National Team, who both failed to finish yesterday's tough mountain stage. Also Andrea Graus (Bigla), Nikki Egyed (Australia) and Rebecca Much (Webcor Builders) didn't take the start today. The peloton stayed together for the first few kilometres, but the high average speed once again put a number of riders in trouble on the Col de Llauro – the first of the day's climbs. On the beginning of the ascent to the Col Fourtou – the second climb of the day – a small crash saw Sharon Laws (Great Britain) – fifth in yesterday's stage and sixth overall – hit the deck, bringing down team-mate Jessica Allen. The peloton passed the top of the climb together once more. However, the technical descent saw a number of attacks from many of the overall contenders, but all were brought back. Part way down the long, winding descent an attack from Charlotte Becker (Nürnberger Versicherung) and Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (High Road) with just over 50 kilometres to go finally broke the elastic and the two German sprinters pulled clear. Together, Becker and Teutenberg continued to build their advantage to a maximum of around 2'40 as they crossed the third and final climb of the day, the third category Col de la Bataille. On the predominantly flat final 30 kilometres the pair saw their advantage cut considerably, as the effort of being in front of the race began to tell. A brief breakaway formed with around 25 kilometres to go, containing seventh placed Amber Neben, Laws and her Great Britain team-mate Nicole Cooke, who is lying in fourth. However, it was soon neutralised by maillot jaune Suzanne Ljungskog. The attacks in the main group cut the leading pair's gap considerably and 10 kilometres before the finish it was down to around 30 seconds. Sensing a possible bunch sprint the DSB Bank team moved to the front to try to bring back the escapees. Their organised chase cut the pair's lead to just six seconds as they passed the flamme rouge and entered the final kilometre. With 700m to go the DSB chase was disrupted as it crossed a railway bridge and the German pair up front pulled out another two seconds advantage. As Becker and Teutenberg rounded the final bend with 200 metres to go, the bunch had them in sight, but it was to no avail and Teutenberg took an easy sprint victory over an exhausted Becker. Monica Holler (Bigla) led the peloton home immediately behind the pair from Angel Brodtka (DSB Bank) and Elke Gebhardt (Germany). All of the overall contenders finished in the main peloton, so there was no change to the top of the general classification.
