24th Tour de l'Aude - 2.2France, May 16-25, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - May 20: Osseja – Osseja , 101 kmLjungskog climbs to Pyrenean glorySwede takes stage and maillot jaune on Tour's queen stageBy Ben Atkins in Osseja Former two-time world champion Susanne Ljungskog (Menikini-Selle Italia) struck a huge blow to her rivals today in the Tour de l'Aude's queen stage. The Swede put in a devastating attack that none of them could follow on the second of three big climbs, caught and dropped lone leader Sara Carrigan (Lotto Belisol) and continued alone to finish more than three minutes clear of the other GC contenders. Earlier in the stage strong work from Trixie Worrack's Nürnberger Versicherung domestiques and Ljungskog's Menikini-Selle Italia team had whittled the peloton down to the main players, most of whom had at least one team-mate for company. Carrigan had escaped in virtually the first concerted attack of the day, but Ljungskog's fierce acceleration on the first category Col de la Llose proved decisive. With little or no concerted or organised chase in the group behind her, Ljungskog powered away taking minutes out of her rivals. She quickly reclaimed her time deficit on race leader Judith Arndt, then set about building her own race leading advantage. "It was a good day. Yeah, I must say that!" joked Ljungskog to Cyclingnews after her victory. "Yes it was a plan to go very hard today." Behind Ljungskog was a group containing most of the race's big favourites including the current top three going in to the stage: Judith Arndt, Trixie Worrack and Nicole Cooke (Great Britain), but none seemed willing or able to respond to the Swede's acceleration. "I'm a little bit surprised," explained Ljungskog, "because I think it was a good attack but not super-good, that was a little bit strange because they couldn't follow. But maybe I had a good day!" Along with the stage victory, Ljungskog has taken the maillot jaune and a sizeable advantage, both in terms of time and psychologically. She doesn't feel in any way though that the battle for the overall victory is over with the race just halfway through. "No I don't think. It's still going to be hard. Five days and they're going to attack like hell - the other ones. "But, you know I have a good team," she continued, "and I have to keep my eyes open and be alert." After victory in the Tour de Berne World Cup earlier in the month and this devastating victory today, Ljungskog's form seems to be coming together nicely for her main target of the season. Any victory on the way to that target though can only be a good thing for the Swede's confidence. "This was not really my goal," she explained, "to try to win it, because I want to be the winner of the Giro [d'Italia]. But if I win this it's a big bonus. "It's good to have it - if I win - because I feel more comfortable," she laughed. Finishing ninth behind Ljungskog, among the main contenders, was the holder of the pink jersey for young rider: Claudia Hausler (Nürnberger Versicherung). The young German explained to Cyclingnews what she felt had gone wrong on the stage and her team's tactical plan. "I think today we are not very happy with what happened," said Hausler. "Our plan didn't work, so we must see the next days." Despite the Nürnberger Versicherung team not having any success, Hausler also looked to the teams who were also present in the main group. Teams like High Road, Australia and Great Britain were there in numbers and whatever plans they may have had to deal with Ljungskog were equally unsuccessful. Nürnberger Versicherung remains a very strong team however, and with some tough stages to come, the pink jersey holder remains optimistic. "It's not only ours - there are others in front with their tactics - but it didn't work how we wanted, but in the next days it should be better." One of those Australians in the main group of contenders was young rider Carla Ryan, but as a relative newcomer to this level of racing, she was happy to be merely staying with the favourites. "Today it was great to get in some hills and get into the road racing after the weekend and the first few stages," she told Cyclingnews, "but I suffered today! "It was just a matter of hanging in there and getting in with the front group today, I managed to do that, so I'm looking forward to finding some better legs as the Tour progresses." Despite suffering so much staying with the leaders on the biggest climbs of the Tour so far, Ryan attempted to get away in the closing stages. "I tried a little bit towards the end," she went on, "but I think it took me like 80 k's to maybe get some legs today - after all the climbing was done, unfortunately!" After finishing strongly in the Tour's toughest stage, Ryan keeps her high position in the overall classification, and remains poised behind Hausler in the battle for the pink young rider's jersey - especially with the German's commitment to team-mate Trixie Worrack. "You have to fight on sometimes," said Ryan, "I would hate to give in and settle for second group. You've just got to fight through it and if you want to keep on getting better and progressing, I'm only young to it so I've just got to fight through the hard times and hopefully come through with the goods sometime!" Ljungskog now takes her leader's jersey to the rolling fifth stage at Toulouges, just to the west of Perpignan. As the course moves back towards the coast the wind that was such a factor in the early stages may come into play once more. How it unfoldedOne hundred and five riders from 18 teams took the start in the Pyrenean village of Osseja, just a few kilometres from the Spanish border. The early kilometres were mostly downhill and a frenetic pace was set by the teams at the front. Despite this, there were very few crashes, the most notable brining down a number of riders including Diana Ziliute and Rasa Polikeviciute (both Lithuania). Before the first climb of the Col du Calvaire officially started there was a 20km drag, and both the Menikini-Selle Italia and Nürnberger Versicherung began to increase the pace, most notably from riders Nathalie Bates and Eva Lutz. This pressure had the result of dropping a sizeable number of riders, the biggest name of which was French favourite Elodie Touffet (Gauss RDZ Ormu). Near to the top of the first climb a group broke clear, including the Great Britain trio of Nicole Cooke, Sharon Laws and Emma Pooley and High Road's Linda Villumsen. The group never achieved a notable gap and was soon reeled in. An attack from Olympic champion Sara Carrigan (Lotto-Belisol) managed to break clear though and she set about increasing her lead. The main group of favourites all came together on the technical descent, except for Carrigan who continued alone. As the top of the second climb, the first category Col de la Llose, approached Susanne Ljungskog (Menikini-Selle Italia) attacked and left the group in pursuit of the lone Carrigan. No one in the main group responded despite all of the favourites having at least one team-mate present. Ljungskog continued to increase her advantage and reeled in the lone Carrigan who was by this time over minute clear of the rest. With Carrigan and Ljungskog in front, the main group of pursuers consisted of: Trixie Worrack and Claudia Hausler (both Nürnberger Versicherung), Judith Arndt and Linda Villumsen (both High Road), Virginia Hennig (Germany), Tina Liebig (DSB Bank), Mirjam Melchers-Van Poppel (Netherlands), Noemi Cantele (Bigla), Alison Powers and Amber Neben (both United States), Emma Johansson and Irene Van Den Broek (both AA Drink), Lorain Graham, Nicki Egyed and Carla Ryan (all Australia), Julia Martisova (Gauss RDZ Ormu), Nicole Cooke, Sharon Laws and Emma Pooley (all Great Britain), Christine Thorburn, Erinne Willock and Alexandra Wrubleski (all Webcor Builders), Maryline Salvetat (France), Lieselot Decroix and Sophie Goor (Lotto Belisol) and Tatiana Antoshina (Fenixs). On the slopes of the hors category Col de Creu - the final categorised climb - Ljungskog caught Carrigan and the two of them rode together briefly before the Swedish two-time world champion continued alone. No longer in the lead, Carrigan drifted back to the main group. In the group behind, work from riders like Trixie Worrack and attacks from the likes of Sharon Laws failed to make any impression on the flying Ljungskog and her lead grew steadily to over three minutes by the top. Over the final part of the stage, featuring a long drag and a long descent back down to the valley and Osseja, the effort went out of the chase and Ljungskog continued alone, increasing her advantage slightly. In the final kilometres - especially the final drag to the finish line - the group began to attack one another and Alison Powers managed to escape. Ljungskog was untouchable by this stage and finished over two minutes clear. Powers came in next followed by Emma Johansson, Nicki Egyed and Sharon Laws. The rest of the main favourites followed in ones and twos. With this victory Ljungskog takes the yellow Jersey from Arndt, who finished with the rest of the favourites, and now holds a commanding lead going into the second half of the race.
