24th Tour de l'Aude - 2.2France, May 16-25, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - May 19: Lezignan Corbières – Lezignan Corbières, 111 kmZabirova breezes to solo victoryKazakh wins stage; Arndt keeps yellowBy Ben Atkins in Lezignan Corbières Kazakhstan road and time trial champion Zulfia Zabirova (Bigla Cycling Team) won stage three of the Tour de l'Aude after an attack in the final 15km saw her bridge up to leader Angela Brodtka (DSB Bank) and drop her to win alone. Zabirova used her experience and strength as a time triallist to first escape, and the hold off a fast bunch on a very windy afternoon in southern France. Brodtka successfully escaped with around 35km to go, not long after a crash had brought down pre-race favourite Amber Neben (United States) and Luise Keller (High Road). The German managed to pull out a gap of over a minute before the bunch cut it to just 15 seconds. Her persistence, and good blocking by her team-mates saw the gap rise back up to over a minute with around 15km to go, but she was no match for the rampaging Kazakh who caught and dropped her in the closing stages. As in yesterday's team time trial, the wind proved to be a major factor in the stage, which zigged and zagged across the wine growing countryside of the Corbières region. On a day that was once again pronounced a good one for the Dutch, it was a German on a Dutch team that finally made a decisive break, but a Kazakh on a Swiss squad that took victory. "Yesterday with the wind, I decided that this stage was good for me because I like the wind," said a delighted Zabirova to Cyclingnews at the finish. "I attacked with 15km to go and [Brodtka and I] rode together for maybe seven kilometres," explained the Kazakh champion. "But my director told me on the radio that she is stronger than [me] in the sprint so be careful to arrive in the finish with her because she is faster than you. So I tried two times to leave her, and the third time I was successful." Dropping Brodtka close to the finish may have been a sensible move in terms of the sprint finish but with the wind as strong as it was, many riders would prefer some company to share the work. Not Zabirova though, as the Bigla rider preferred to go it alone, and was confident that she could make it to the finish "When I was alone I knew that I could win because I like to be alone," she continued, "with a few riders it is good, but I like to ride alone. It is good training for the time trial!" she added with a smile. Behind Zabirova and Brodtka, the peloton was led in by a sprinting Diana Ziliute (Lihuania) ahead of Canadian Gina Grain (Webcor Builders) and Suzanne De Goede (Nürnberger Versicherung). All of the favourites finished in the main group and so the overall classification remained unchanged with Judith Arndt (High Road) leading Trixie Worrack (Nürnberger Versicherung) by 12 seconds and Nicole Cooke (Great Britain) by 40. "Yes it was [very stressful], because of the wind," Arndt told Cyclingnews after the stage as she rushed to set off on the three-hour drive to tomorrow's stage start in Osseja. More stressful still will be the worry about the condition of team-mate Keller who should be a valuable supporter in tomorrow's stage, but crashed onto her knee this afternoon. Team High Road will be sincerely hoping that the German champion has not done any damage there. Tomorrow's Osseja stage will be the first of two to take place outside the Aude department, situated as it is in the Pyrénées-Orientales department close to the border with Spain. This will be the queen stage of this year's Tour de l'Aude, taking in two hors category and one first category climbs in 101km. How it unfolded105 Riders from 18 teams took the start on a hot, sunny but blustery afternoon in Lézignan Corbieres. The only abandon being Luxembourgoise Suzie Godart of Fenixs who failed to finish yesterday's team time trial, cutting the team down to three after just two stages. From the start it was obvious that the wind that had been such a factor in yesterday's team time trial would play its part again. The consensus was that this would once again be a good stage for the teams from the Netherlands. The first attack of the day came with in the first 5km as Kazakh champion Zulfia Zabirova (Bigla) and former World cyclo-cross champion Maryline Salvetat (France) tried to escape the clutches of the fast moving peloton. The move was not to last long though and they were reeled in by an attentive Menikini-Selle Italia team. The next attempt was made by Nicki Egyed (Australia) after 24km, but once again the speed of the peloton was such that the DSB Bank team was able to pull her back without too much trouble. In the next kilometre French favourite Elodie Touffet (Gauss RDZ Ormu) tried her luck, but she was unable to get more than a few seconds before being pulled in once more. After 40km Vicki Whitelaw (Australia) tried to do what her team-mate Egyed had failed to do earlier, but the French national team came to the front of the bunch and pulled her back in. 6km later Touffet once again tried her luck, but once again DSB Bank pulled her back. The first sprint came at 58km and was won by the current jersey holder Monica Holler (Bigla) from Touffet and Whitelaw. Touffet's team-mate Julia Martisova tried to use this to her advantage but the combined strength of the Bigla and Great Britain teams prevented her from getting anywhere. A few kilometres further on Touffet tried yet again, but once again it came to nothing. The second sprint at 67km was taken by Touffet as she made yet another move, she was followed over the line by Emma Mackie (Lotto-Belisol) and Brooke Millar (United States). At 72km Adrie Visser (DSB Bank) managed to get away and carve out a gap of up to 7 seconds, but she too was soon picked up by a fast moving and attentive peloton. A few kilometres later a crash in the bunch brought down a number of riders including Amber Neben and Katherine Carrol (both United States), Sharon Van Essen (DSB Bank) and Luise Keller (High Road). All managed to rejoin, although Van Essen was forced to chase alone for a while. Soon afterwards Touffet tried to escape yet again, but it came to nothing. As she was reeled back in though, Angela Brodtka (DSB Bank) put in a move that finally proved successful and she quickly pulled out a gap. Brodtka's gap grew quickly to over a minute by kilometre 83, but with 20km to the finish the combined impetus of the fast peloton and the swirling winds brought it down to just over 30 seconds. By the final sprint with 21km to go Brodka's lead was just 15 seconds, but good blocking from her team-mates – Visser took third behind the inevitable Touffet – saw it increase once again. With 15km remaining – and with Brodtka's lead approaching a minute and a half – Zabirova launched another attack. The Kazakh quickly caught the still strong German and the pair worked together for a few kilometres. Fearing the superior sprint of the DSB Bank rider, Zabirova put in several digs to try and drop her, the third of which worked and she quickly pulled away. Zabirova continued to build her lead over Brodtka and the peloton and finally crossed the line alone 46 seconds ahead. Brodtka hung on to her second place and the peloton was led home by a fast finishing Diana Ziliute (Lithunia). Judith Arndt (High Road) and all the other overall contenders finished safely inside the peloton, and so the German former World champion keeps the maiilot jaune for a second day as the race heads into the Pyrenees.
