24th Tour de l'Aude - 2.2France, May 16-25, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 1 - May 17: Rieux Minervois – Rieux Minervois , 107 kmShe's Back! Cooke storms to Aude victoryBriton wins stage; Ljungskog takes yellowBy Ben Atkins in Rieux Minervois Nicole Cooke (Great Britain) has taken her first victory of 2008 in magnificent style by winning the sprint from a group of five on the slightly downhill finish into Rieux Minervois. Just five kilometres from the line the British champion was in a group 30 seconds behind the leading four, consisting of the 2007 top three: Susanne Ljungskog (Menikini-Selle Italia), Trixi Worrack (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung) and Judith Arndt (High Road), and Cooke's Great Britain team-mate Sharon Laws. An attack from that second group saw Cooke catch the leaders with less than two kilometres to go and Laws successfully led her captain out for the sprint. "It was teamwork! Really good!" exclaimed an ecstatic Cooke to Cyclingnews. "You saw the style of how I did it: bridge from the bunch... I think it was thirty seconds or something and I bridged it. We told Sharon [Laws] to stop working and I think that disrupted the leaders a little bit, and Sharon still had the go to lead it out." "All I had to do was think about the sprint," she added. In answer to the question on whether or not this victory means that her form is beginning to arrive, Cooke was far more circumspect. "It's a win," she replied candidly. "You don't ever knock a win do you?" she added laughing. As for her attack, in the closing stages, Cooke revealed that the intention had never been to go solo, merely to start to add her own efforts to the chase."I didn't mean to attack the little break, I thought: 'Okay I'll help you guys now'. I got to the front and I was like: 'I'm alone!'" "I went to the front because we'd told Sharon to stop working, and I just left them. Then I bridged and Sharon led it out." Second placed Trixie Worrack was happy with the way the stage had turned out: "It was pretty hard," she told Cyclingnews on her way to the podium. "I wanted the group to stay away because otherwise the work would be for nothing – then we can go up the mountain slow, and then stay in the group and not go fast! "I was surprised that she came back," Worrack said of Cooke's bridging across. "She's fast, so it's okay that she won the sprint, but I was surprised that she came back and then won the sprint. But she's strong," she added. Fourth placed Judith Arndt was also philosophical about her race: "Actually good, she said, "except the finish." "It was a little bit too fast – the sprint – for me," she continued. "I think I would have needed an 11 today because it was a little bit downhill and I usually use a bigger gear in the sprint, so that was not good for me." The pace of the front group had been strong, but – Arndt revealed – it was not due to equal shares of the work. "Actually," she said, "Trixie Worrack was mainly working, and the other three – sometimes we worked – but most of the work Trixie did. "All of a sudden Cooke was there, and then all of a sudden it was the finish already. It was surprising that she came and also won. It looks like we were not really good enough for her," she added with a laugh. With her third place on the stage Susanne Ljungskog has taken the yellow leaders jersey that she is defending from last year's race. It was a deliberate tactic for the Swedish two-time World champion. "This stage was a really hard one," said Ljungskog, "and I thought I had a good chance to take this jersey. And I did it and I'm really happy – good job!" Earlier in the stage a break containing Sigrid Corneo (Menikini-Selle-Italia), Monica Holler (Bigla), Agne Bagdonaviciute (Lithuania) and Helen Wyman (Team Swift managed to build a lead of more than four minutes. The main climb of the day though, put paid to their efforts and they were reeled in a long way before the top. An attack from Ljungskog caused the front of the race to split and those two groups formed ahead of the main peloton. Monica Holler didn't manage to stay away from the main peloton, and finished some way behind the winner, but is consoled with her main target for the race this year: the Red sprints jersey. "For sure, we saw that there was a gap behind and we thought that we would continue and maybe get a big gap enough before the mountain and stay in the front group," the young Swede told Cyclingnews. Unfortunately they caught us and we all got a little bit tired!" "I'm the sprinter in the team. I cannot go on the attack in the mountains so I'm trying to go for the sprint jersey." British cyclo-cross champion Helen Wyman – also part of the break – was also pleased with her efforts of the day, and also realistic about the chances of them staying away once the climb started. "We were losing 20 seconds a kilometre on the climb!" she laughed. "But you saw the break, only one of them was a climber apart from me..." Well, an attack went and sometimes they let stuff go in this [race]," she continued, "so I thought if I can get across to it – and ten seconds and I was on it – and by the time we'd got four and a half minutes I was thinking this could stay away... but it didn't quite work out, but it was fun all the same!" Ljungskog now takes her yellow jersey into tomorrow's team time trial, where her Menikini-Selle Italia squad will come under pressure from teams like High Road – who won it last year as T-Mobile – and Nürnberger Versicherung. How it unfolded106 riders from 18 teams took the start under slightly cloudy skies in the village of Rieux Minervois with the wind that so dominated yesterday's Prologue having dropped significantly. The first sprint of the day at Laure Minervois after just six kilometres in saw Sigrid Corneo (Menikini-Selle-Italia), Monica Holler (Bigla) and Agne Bagdonaviciute (Lithuania) break clear. Recognising the potential of the move, Helen Wyman (Team Swift) left the peloton to join them. The four worked together well building a lead of over four minutes by the time they reached the base of the main obstacle of the day: the hors category Col de la Croix de Sous. As the climb went on the four riders saw their lead reduced steadily as the peloton gradually increased it speed, and at around six kilometres to the top the escape was over as they were caught. With the peloton together the favourites began sending their team-mates forward to increase the pace, and with around 2 km. to the summit Susanne Ljungskog (Menikini-Selle Italia) attacked and the bunch began to split into pieces. Ahead of the main peloton, two groups formed. The front one consisted of Ljungskog, Trixi Worrack (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung), Judith Arndt (High Road) and Sharon Laws (Great Britain). Behind them another small group containing Amber Neben (United States), Christine Thorburn (Webcor Builders) Laws' team-mate Nicole Cooke, Worrack's team-mate Claudia Hausler, Arndt's team-mate Luise Keller and Carla Ryan (Australia). Because most of the following group had team-mates in the lead, the majority of the work was being done by Thorburn, Neben and Ryan. They were making little progress however in bringing back the leading quartet, led mostly by the impetus of Worrack. Just outside the final five kilometres, Laws stopped working and Cooke launched herself off the front of the chasing group and managed to bridge across to the leaders on her own with two kilometres to go. As they approached the finish, Laws began to lead Cooke out and the Welshwoman won a close sprint over Worrack, Ljungskog and Arndt. Laws – job done – came in fifth. Hausler led in Keller from the chasers with Ryan coming in ahead of the two Americans Thorburn and Neben. With no sign of prologue winner Katie Mactier (Australia) or second placed Ellen Van Dijk (Netherlands), Ljungskog takes the leader's yellow jersey into tomorrow's team time trial.
