24th Tour de l'Aude - 2.2France, May 16-25, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 7 - May 23: Castelnaudary – Castelnaudary , 108 kmZabiriva sees double in the windKazakh takes second stage; Van Den Broek on to podiumBy Ben Atkins in Castelnaudary Zulfia Zabirova (Bigla) has taken her second stage in this year's Tour de l'Aude after escaping the rest of her breakaway companions with 15km remaining. After repeated attacks by herself and team-mate Jennifer Hohl, she finally managed to get clear and time trialled to the finish to take her second solo victory. Katherine Carroll (United States) - who had initiated the break in the stage's early kilometres - finished second ahead of Martine Bras (Netherlands). The stage was dominated by a breakaway of eleven riders who were allowed to escape by maillot jaune Susanne Ljungskog's Menikini-Selle Italia team as none of its members posed any immediate threat in the overall classification. The best placed rider was Irene Van Den Broek (AA Drink), who sat in 20th place 8'16" back. At the end of the day the Dutchwoman moved into third place overall by virtue of the breakaway riders finishing more than four minutes ahead of the overall leaders. "It was a good day and a good job," said the Kazakh champion to Cyclingnews. With the team, we were three girls from Bigla, and we worked and we thought about the win today. But it's true, before the start I thought about the win, because my director said to me: 'today is good for you'." Coming in to the final stages of the race, Bigla was one of two teams with more than one rider in the break (the others being Irene Van Den Broek and Irene Werner from AA Drink), and between them Zabirova and Swiss team-mate Jennifer Hohl made that numerical superiority count. "We make it work," continued Zabirova, "on the last climb Jennifer Hohl - she attacked - and I try. It was good tactic because Jennifer worked a lot for me. I feel good today." Had the group arrived together at the finish the overwhelming favourite for the victory would have been High Road sprinter Ina Teutenberg. This was someone that no one would want to take to the finish with them, but Zabirova almost found herself doing just that. "Before there was one time in one moment we were together in the front," she explained, "and they [took] us [back] - the girls - and I tried again. But before, the first attack, I was with Teutenberg." It wasn't just Teutenberg that Zabirova wanted to avoid though and, as with her first win on stage 3, she preferred to do things solo to be sure of victory. "You know me; I'm alone, or I'm last!" she laughed. "If I feel good I try, if I don't feel good I stay in the group. "I think it's a good test for me, because last year I didn't win anything. This year I was unlucky. Last year: [I had] many crashes, four crashes. This year: one crash, in Holland. But now, I'm beginning to feel good." Taking another victory while wearing the national colours of her country means a lot for Zabirova, and with victories like this she hopes to inspire more of her countrywomen to participate. "For Kazakhstan this is a good victory because we need this," she explained. "[There's] only me from Kazakhstan in women's cycling and I want to win something for this country, because this country is a good country but not big in sport, and they need sport." Part of the reason for Zabirova managing to escape was having a strong team-mate in the move in Jennifer Hohl. The pair of them were able to take turns attacking the rest of the breakaway until one of them managed to escape. "We attacked in the finish," she explained. "First I [went], and then she [went], and she [could] go away and behind is attack and attack and I [went] behind a wheel. It was so windy, but she is so good in the time trial." Coming in second, 31 seconds behind the Kazakh champion was Katherine Carroll (United States), the woman that had instigated the move at the very beginning of the stage. "Happy for the day," she told Cyclingnews. "Cory had driven the course this morning and so we knew it was going to be tight, and as we were driving in we saw the wind and I was thinking I'll give it a go early and see what happens. "It was in the first five minutes of the race," she continued, "when we started to get out on to the narrower roads, I just pushed it a little bit to see who would want to come and the right mix kind of formed pretty early." As the stage entered its final phase, the decisive moves began to be made: "Attacks started happening - with Bigla having two riders - in the last 20k, she explained. "Around 15k, Zabirova countered and got a ten second gap that quickly grew to 45 - it seemed - and then the rest of us kind of kept attacking until we came in." "It doesn't surprise me that Zula won," said High Road sprinter Ina Teutenberg, "she pretty much was the strongest in that group - and they [Bigla] had the numbers." "They kind of attacked in the end," she continued, "and when Zula does her second attack we were already dead, and the girls tried to go individually after her, but there's no way you close the gap by yourself to Zula Zabirova." Despite being the obvious favourite for the win had the group arrived at the finish line together, Teutenberg was in no doubt that the Kazakh champion had the confidence to win. "I don't think Zula was too nervous," she laughed, "I think she was pretty sure she could drop us all." Eva Lutz (Nürnberger Versicherung) had a hard day working for her team in yesterday's tough hilly stage, and found herself too tired to fight for the win when it mattered today. "After yesterday, with two [Bigla riders] in the group it was hard. The sprint is not so good for me; I wanted to attack, but I felt that my legs weren't good enough. I tried it but it didn't work." "It wasn't only the hills," she added with a smile, "but it was the wind. I felt this from yesterday that my legs were still tired." The big winner on the day - besides Zabirova - was Irene Van Den Broek. Starting the day 20th overall, she managed to gain enough time to rise to third and push Trixie Worrack (Nürnberger Versicherung) off the podium. "The intention was to go for the stage," she said, "and I was eight minutes behind and I knew that maybe with a good breakaway I could close in some time, so both plans. The first plan for the team was to go for the stage win. "For me it was good that the group kept turning while Zabirova was away, so I could take some more minutes," she laughed. For Susanne Ljungskog (Menikini-Selle Italia) it turned out to be one of her quieter days in the race so far. Deciding that the break contained nobody immediately threatening, she allowed it to go and was able to let her team control the rest of the peloton. "It was good," she told Cyclingnews. "It was good that the group went away and then it was easier for my team to keep on rolling. "It was only Irene Van Den Broek on eight minutes so it was a good group," she added. "[There were a lot of attacks] in the beginning before the group went away, but then it was good, it was only after the second climb. Then Cooke and Laws tried to attack me, but I took them right away so it was no problem. I feel good, so it feels good. Enjoy!" For probably the first time in the race the Menikini-Selle Italia team was able to ride tempo on the head of the peloton and control things from the front, something that Ljungskog could really appreciate. "My team was really, really strong today, I'm thankful for that. They were great." "Tomorrow will be hard," she added. Tomorrow's stage will be a tough 119km circuit from the town of Bram, just to the west of Carcassonne, the Aude departmental capital. The course takes in one first category and one second category climb and may well be the final opportunity for the rest to try to take time from Ljungskog. How it unfolded95 riders from 18 teams took the start in the town of Castelnaudary on the banks of the Canal du Midi - the canal that links the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. The skies were slightly cloudy, but more of a concern was the strong wind, which has once again returned to the race. Lorian Graham (Australia) didn't start the race due to some issues with her knee that was damaged in that infamous accident in Germany two years ago. Almost as soon as the flag was dropped, Katherine Carroll (United States) launched an attack off the front of the peloton, she was quickly joined by ten others and they were allowed to escape. The group of eleven riders was made up of: Eva Lutz (Nürnberger Versicherung), Ina Teutenberg (High Road), Adrie Visser (DSB Bank), Martine Bras (Netherlands), Jennifer Hohl, Monica Holler and Zulfia Zabirova (all Bigla), Katherine Carroll (United States) Irene Van Den Broek and Laure Werner (both AA Drink), and Elodie Touffet (Gauss RDZ Ormu). The break worked together well and steadily built a lead over the peloton as they climbed the second category Côte de Labécède Lauragais. The bunch was being led by Susanne Ljungskog's Menikini- Selle Italia team. As the break crossed the second climb, the Col de la Pierre Levée with less than 40km remaining, Holler - wearing the sprints jersey - was dropped by the breakaway, but Bigla still had two riders in Hohl and Zabirova. As the main favourites crossed the climb there were some attacks from the overall contenders, notably 4th placed Sharon Laws and 5th placed Nicole Cooke (both Great Britain), but all were neutralised by Ljungskog. With around 20km remaining the two Bigla riders began to attack their breakaway companions, taking advantage of their numerical advantage over all but the AA Drink team. Hohl attacked, and when she was caught Zabirova would go, and when the others reeled in the Kazakh champion Hohl would go again. On her third attempt, Zabirova managed to escape and with her time trialling strength quickly built a commanding lead - as she had done on stage three at Lézignan-Corbières. A series of counter-attacks from the rest of the breakaway caused the group to split, but there was no cohesive chase and Zabirova continued to build her lead to finish 31 seconds clear. Katherine Carroll led home the rest from Martine Bras, slightly ahead of Irene Van Den Broek and Elodie Touffet. The main field was led home by Diana Ziliute (Lithuania) 4'58" behind Zabirova meaning that Van Den Broek climbs from 20th to 3rd overall, pushing Trixie Worrack off the podium.
