Nature Valley Grand Prix - NEMinnesota, USA, June 11-15, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - June 13: St. Paul Riverfront Time Trial,Bissell's Jacques-Maynes claims stage win, race leadBy Kirsten Robbins in St Paul, Minnesota Bissell time trialist Ben Jacques-Maynes stormed up the final one-kilometre climb on this morning's St. Paul Riverfront Time Trial, stealing a stage win and the race lead on his way up. Clocking in at a 12.32, Jacques-Maynes came home ahead of Rory Sutherland (Health Net-Maxxis) and team-mate John Murphy. "Little one kilometre climbs on a time trial have my name written all over them," said Jacques-Maynes. "I think the hill aided in blowing the general classification time gaps wide open. Likewise, options opened up for tactics in the next couple of races." Jacques-Maynes took a nine second advantage over Sutherland on the time trial and now leads the general classification by seven seconds over third placed Murphey. Both Sutherland and Murphy were docked nine seconds in the previous Stage 2 finish in Cannon Falls by race officials, something that Sutherland said he doesn't understand. "For some reason I was cut nine seconds on GC yesterday - which I don't agree with - but there isn't anything I can do about it," said Sutherland. "This puts me 17 seconds behind Ben instead of nine, which definitely changes things for us. "We have a great group of guys that can get over the shorter climbs and who can sprint," he added. "This puts us in a good position for tomorrow where the responsibility won't be so hard for us." Jacques-Maynes took advantage of the gusty winds with his new aerodynamic time trial position that proved to be a success when put to the test on the 10 kilometer stage. "I did some wind tunnel testing this winter that really helped me out," said Jacques-Maynes. "It taught me how far down and out of the wind I could position my body to decrease the frontal area. So I think having a slightly different position paid off today. I can't say that I didn't feel the wind but I felt really fast going into a block headwind so I can't complain." Armstrong impresses with blistering timeAfter a tumultuous start to the Nature Valley Grand Prix, former world time trial champion Kristin Armstrong did not disappoint her fans on this morning's time trial. Armstrong clocked in at a time of 13.44, taking the stage win and the general classification lead by 42 seconds. The current United States Time Trial Champion flew in with a healthy advantage over her nearest competitors - Canadian time trial champion Anne Samplonius (Cheerwine) and Katharine Carroll (Aaron's). "I wanted to give it everything I had today," said Armstrong who has made it no secret that she is under full throttle preparations for the Beijing Olympic Games held this August. "I really loved this course last year, it was super flat and the girls were giving me a hard time this morning saying that I didn't need a further advantage with the climb included. "I said 'hey, we could go with out the hill and I would still really love the course'." continued Armstrong who attributes her time trailing success to a positive 2008 environment. "And, everything I can do to practice for Beijing is great." Armstrong said the race has been chaotic after ace officials neutralized the first stage's criterium results due to unsafe weather conditions. Armstrong in particular was disappointed with the outcome, after she had lapped the majority of the field in a rather epic stage victory. "It's been a roller coaster here and I'm only here with one other team-mate," said Armstrong. "The first night was a complete bummer but you can only dwell on it until the next morning and then you have to put it behind you and continue with a great week of racing." Samplonius admitted that Cervelo-Lifeforce will have its hands full holding onto the lead. With only two riders the team may be outnumbered compared to the American teams who field eight riders a piece. "We are not just going to sit back," said Samplonius. "Our goal needs to be to make Armstrong work a lot in the next three stages. We need to keep sending people up the road because she only has one other teammate." After this evening's Stage 4 criterium, where time bonuses are up for grabs, there are two of the more difficult stages. Those stages incorporate the Mankato finishing circuit climbs and the notorious Stillwater climbs. "We can't just sit back and bring her onto the finishing circuits tomorrow or the game will be over," said Samplonius. "Some one at her level and her class, we are never going to out climb her. It's a simple strategy and everyone knows it and it's a matter of being able to execute it. The only way to reduce the time gap to Armstrong is by a team effort, not just by Cheerwine - by all the teams."
