Nature Valley Grand Prix - NEMinnesota, USA, June 11-15, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - June 14: Mankato Road RaceSutherland dedicates victory to familyBy Kirsten Robbins in Minnesota Australian all rounder Rory Sutherland (HealthNet-Maxxis) nipped Anthony Colby (Colavita/Sutter Home) at the line to claim an emotion-charged stage victory. Sutherland dedicated the win to his family back home in Canberra, where his grandmother is dying. "Today is an extra special day because I got a call from home last night and my grandmother is on her deathbed," said Sutherland. "My mom asked me to go win the race for her, which put some stress on my shoulders and got me nervous. "Today is by far, first and foremost for my family - it's very important for them," he added. "Also, for my team because they gave it everything they had today and rode really well." Sutherland and Colby had joined forces off the front of a late-race four man break over the four challenging finishing circuits. Andrew Bajadali (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast) out sprinted a small chase group round out the podium. "The guys have been riding so well today on a wave of confidence and camaraderie with in the team," said Sutherland. In a similar fashion to the previous year, Colby danced up and over the first of four grueling ascents of the finishing circuit's 600 metre climb. Colby found himself without followers until a chase group that contained Sutherland bridged across. "The effort was to test the waters and see how people were riding," said Colby.
"I came through first around the corner and Rory still beat me," he added. "He's strong all-round and I knew it would be difficult to get the win against him." Sutherland's victory confirmed him as the Mankato race favourite after winning the stage for the second consecutive year. The win brought Sutherland the overall leader's jersey, ahead of team-mate John Murphy and the 2007 Nature Valley Grand Prix winner Ivan Stevic (Toyota-United). "I think Bissell rode really well today and under the conditions they kept coming back," said Sutherland of the former race leading team. "It has been great to see a really good group of guys race for a cause and for a leader - I think that's fantastic. "We had a small gap on Ben Jacques-Maynes in the last lap, but I also had to shake Ivan Stevic off my wheel to gain some time back on him," said Sutherland. "So I went on the climb with Colby and I know the race is won by keeping the pressure on after the climb. We worked together but it was my responsibility to do most of the work because I was in a much more beneficial position at the finish. I think we not only have to keep our eye on Stevic but everyone in the top ten." How it unfoldedThe professional men lined up in Mankato, Minnesota to start the lengthy 145-kilometre stage. Once again the stage was struck by typical gusting cross winds. An early break away of five riders slipped off the front of the field, 25 kilometers into the stage. The group included Christian Valenzuela (Successfulliving), Davide Frattini (Colavita/Sutter Home), Jared Gruber (Time Pro Cycling), Doug Ollerenshaw (Rock Racing) and Sam Johnson (Hagens Berman). The early break away was caught several miles after the second intermediate sprint. A combination of efforts from Health Net-Maxxis, Toyota-United and Kelly benefit Strategies-Medifast reduced the field during patches of strong cross winds. Bissell continued to regain control of the front to protect race leader Ben Jacques-Maynes. The strong winds helped to ease the strain of pulling back attacks, according to Bissell director Glen Mitchell. "I think guys were happy to sit in a bit during the cross and head winds today," said Mitchell. Jared Gruber opened up a gap on the field by mid-race, only this time it was his solo effort for 40 kilometres that earned him the most aggressive rider's jersey. A field of some 30 riders entered onto the finishing circuits in Mankato, a group that included Jacques-Maynes. Despite the group's size, one swift effort imposed by Colby caused irreparable damage. Doug Ollerenshaw (Rock Racing), Shawn Milne (Team Type 1) and David Veilleux (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast) joined Colby at the start of the third lap. The four riders gained a large enough lead to qualify the event's best young rider, Veilleux, as the virtual overall leader. Sensing the tired legs of Jacques-Maynes, Sutherland launched himself from the chase group and straight into the break away. Stevic was in tow, while Andrew Bajadali (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast) dangled just off the back. "On the second lap I waited a little for the other three riders," said Colby, who rounded the first lap solo. "I saw another group of guys coming so I was waiting to have to attack again, but it was Rory who jumped the gun on that. It was good enough. We worked together to get as much time as we could on the others." Sutherland had used his efforts wisely when jumping across to the break away. The Aussie's efforts left Jacques-Maynes back in the chase group, watching his leader's jersey ride off into the distance. "I couldn't dig too deep and I had to ride a solid tempo to limit my losses," said Jacques-Maynes. "I know I can't jump with Rory, it's more of a matter of whether the group he jumps into will work with him. I kind of held him for the second to last lap, but after that it was damage control." Sutherland and Colby crested Mankato with a 10 second advantage on the chase group on the final ascent. Much like the previous year, Colby flew through the final corner in first position, where Sutherland came around him for the victory. The reunited chase group rounded the final corner some 10 seconds later, with Bajadali claiming third place ahead of team-mate Veilleux. Stevic was present in the chase group, gaining enough time to jump into second place overall. Outnumbered Armstrong triumphsKristin Armstrong (Cervelo-Lifeforce) proved to be an uncontainable force, riding away from the peloton to a solo victory after entering the Mankato finishing circuits. Armstrong showed off her climbing prowess on Mankato for her third consecutive victory on the stage, while further increasing her race lead. "Mankato didn't feel the same as last year, I felt ganged up on this time," said Armstrong, who only has one team-mate - Emma Rickards - contesting the event. "Last year I had my whole team here, this year poor Emma Rickards has done so much work. "It was nice winning here in Mankato, it was very gratifying to win this race for the third year in a row and under such circumstances," continued Armstrong. "The fans here come out and they remember me. That's the coolest thing. I see all the same people each year along the course drinking beer and having a party. I feel like I know them because I see them in the same spots each year." The battle for second place was much more dramatic, with Lauren Franges (Tibco) jumping her competition on the final climb to further demonstrated her all around talent. Franges' departure left Katharine Carroll (Aaron's) to win the bunch sprint for third place. "I knew exactly how she was going to win the race today," said Franges, a former team-mate of Armstrong on the 2007 Lipton squad. "Joanne tried to stay with her over the first climb but she feel off pace on the second lap so I decided to give it a try. But, Kristin's in a class of her own here, especially on the climbs, so the rest of us just need to give it everything we had." Armstrong continued to build her race lead, while Carroll's third place time bonus held pad her advantage over third placed outright Anne Samplonius (Cheerwine). How it unfoldedKatheryn Curi-Mattis (Webcor Builders) set sail eight kilometers into the women's 146-kilometre stage. The strong showing from Curi-Mattis proved she is recovering well from a double broken collarbone on separate occasions early this year. "My goal for this race was to get fitness," said Curi-Mattis, who remained off the front for more than 100-kilometres. "After my two accidents early this season, I'm definitely not at par with these women. "I had to re-adjust my goals in terms of what I wanted to get out of this race," she added. "I didn't think I would be out there for as long as I was and, holy moly, I'm tired. It gets lonely out there by yourself. The head wind was just horrible." The race behind Curi-Mattis intensified at the intermediate point sprints, won by classification leader Joanne Kiesanowski (Tibco). With the sprint competition complete, the general classification battle took centre stage, with the main act being the peloton's efforts to wear down Armstrong. Aaron's organised its riders at the front to reduce Curi-Mattis' advantage to 15 seconds. Kristin Sanders (Aaron's) bridged across to the breakaway in its final 15 kilometre stretch, to keep a check on things. "I wasn't too worried about that break," said Armstrong. "There were still two hours left of the race. With those head winds and cross winds today it would have been really hard for them to stay out there like that." Upon the return of Curi-Mattis and Sanders to the peloton, with 30 kilometres remaining, a well represented break - importantly without Armstrong - of eight riders gained 25 seconds on the main field. Value Act Capital, Cheerwine, Aaron's, ProMan amongst others pushed the speeds to try to reach the finishing circuits without Armstrong. "My team-mate Emma got into a break of about eight riders and sat on," recalled Armstrong. "It had Tina Pic and Meredith Miller and a lot of other really strong riders." With the danger of the break down the road, Armstrong went to the head of the peloton and started dragging the two groups break back together. The Cervelo-Lifeforce pair continued to fight the flurry of attacks with help from Kate Bates (High Road) that kept the speeds high approaching the finishing circuits. "I got to Mankato and I initially though, maybe I'll wait a couple of laps but then I though, no way, I'm done being attacked," said Armstrong, who gave one strong attack at the base of Mankato to rid everyone but Kiesanowski. "I knew I didn't have a team-mate and to have a team of eight going after me, even on a climb, no way. By me taking control it is a lot easier than some one else taking control of me." Armstrong shed Kiesanowski on the second ascent, which marked the beginning of her solo victory. Meredith Miller (Aaron's), Stacey Marple (Cheerwine) and Lauren Franges broke away from the chase group, but by the final lap Franges was alone and riding to the finish line for second place. Carroll noted the importance of gaining the third place time bonus over her group companions Samplonius and Kiesanowski, all separated by a second on the general classification. "The three of us came to the last corner side by side and it was a drag to the line," said Carroll. "Luckily it was a short drag because I was pretty tired."
