23rd Tour de Beauce - 2.2Canada, June 10-15, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 6 - June 15: Circuit Urbain Ville de Québec, 125kmTuft finally conquers Beauce, Wilson nets first win of seasonBy Mark Zalewski in Ville de Québec The final stage of the Tour de Beauce was held in the provincial capital of Québec in conjunction with the city's 400th anniversary. As only one of the only 'fortified' cities remaining in North America, it was only fitting that it played host to a huge battle. This time, though, the battle was waged on bicycles over a challenging circuit. The course featured a river front stretch into a headwind, followed by a two kilometre climb that twisted through the old city then the main city wall up to the finish. Race leader Svein Tuft and his Symmetrics team rode in the crosshairs of Team Type 1 all day, but were able to repel the onslaught of attacks to secure overall victory for Canadian - the first time since Eric Wohlberg won the race in 1996. For Team Type 1, all was not lost as Aussie Matt Wilson escaped out of the main break of the day to claim a solo stage win - his first in North America. "The way the guys rode, there was no way I was letting them down," said Tuft, who has been runner-up at Beauce twice in his career. "It's been our goal since the beginning. We are all Canadians and this is our big race. "We have all done it for so many years, pounding away at Beauce and have been so close many times," he added. "We have all wanted the overall and it's huge for us. It's all for the guys more than for future results or sponsors - we all committed to it and it finally panned out." Tuft said that the pressure was on the entire day, but that staying calm and sticking to the plan paid off. "We were getting attacked like crazy but my guys were so strong that we could let guys go up there and fry," he said. "It's a hard wind along the bottom that guys would get the gap and would just fry out there. "I was a little worried because we were getting hit on the climb so many times, but it was just the strong guys who were doing it - and you end up in a headwind section for the next five kilometres," he added. "We have all our guys coming back on over the top, settling back into the pace. If it's two guys, they might shred us over the top but then we regain out momentum [on the bottom.]" Then in the final lap Tecos-Trek's Bernardo Colex, sitting just six seconds behind Tuft in the overall, made his attempt. But Symmetrics was ready with plenty of bullets left to cover the attacks. "We came into the final lap and we had five guys left!" said Tuft. "That just shows the depth of our team." "We were hoping we could open up a gap on the last lap," said Colex. "My team brought me to the climb but I couldn't open up and gaps - Symmetrics was so organised that we knew we wouldn't be able to get away until the end. But they were too strong." While not able to overcome the six second deficit, the Tecos-Trek team is quite happy with the strong second place result. Colex was all smiles after today's race. "It was the most beautiful course I have ever raced on," he said. "All the people and the fans... it was very special." One of Tuft's strongest assets all week, Canadian champion Cam Evans, said the goal from the start was always Tuft. "Everyone came here with one goal, to see Svein win the overall," he said. "We all had absolute confidence in him. "The race was hard every time up the hill but we were never really worried," added Evans. "A few like [Glen] Chadwick rolled away but we knew we had enough horsepower to get them back. We were more worried about getting isolated in a small group." Team Type 1 had multiple general classification cards to play today, and was doing so when the plans changed. "I wanted to put Symmetrics under a bit of pressure," said KOM winner Glen Chadwick, who attacked on the climb multiple times. "But I think one of the times when they brought me back is when Jonesy went and got across to Matt. When the break was out to over three minutes we stopped to see if it could roll away." At one point the break had nearly four minutes and Team Type 1 thought maybe it could work the general classification angle with Wilson and Chris Jones. But Symmetrics caught on and brought the gap down to under three minutes. As the break rolled to the bottom of the climb on the second-to-last lap, Jones jumped away from the group. "With one to go Matt said, 'Why don't you hit it up the climb and see if you can break it up?' I went and no one came," said Jones. "So...this is going to be a long 10km!" Jones kept his lead up over the finish line and out towards the main descent. "When I hit the [bottom] it was still 30 seconds so I thought maybe I could hold it," he added. "Then it was down to 10 seconds and I just kept going to get Matt as close as possible to the bottom of the climb." Back in the break Wilson tagged onto the end, saving valuable energy while the rest dug deep to pull Jones back. "I couldn't have thought it would have worked as perfectly as it did," said Wilson. "He went all the way from the bottom of the climb and he was so strong to stay out there as long as he did. Five guys working full gas to bring him back in the last 10km!" Finally the group caught Jones near the old city. Of course counter attacks ensued and almost spoiled Type 1's plan, forcing Wilson to make his move before the actual climb started. "I went before because the Colombian guy attacked and everyone was looking at me since I had been sitting on," explained Wilson. "It was earlier than I really wanted to - I had a bad moment with about 750 [metres] to go and I turned around to look and saw the gap. I knew that if I somehow just kept pedaling the momentum would carry me." Philipp Mamos (Sparkasse) and Matt Shriver (Jittery Joe's) were closing the gap but not enough, taking second and third. Despite not winning the overall battle, Team Type 1 took home just about everything else. The outfit won the team classification, KOM jersey and sprint jersey with Moises Aldape. The best young rider of the race was Johann Rabie (U23 South Africa.) For Tuft and Symmetrics the win could be a little bitter-sweet, as the team's financial situation remains dire. Tuft said the next big goal for him and his team-mates will be the Canadian national championships, held on the same course as Saturday's circuit race. The Tour de Beauce was also the final race before the Canadian Cycling Association picks its Olympic squad. When asked what he thinks his chances are for making the team, Tuft smiled and replied: "It can't hurt it!"
