Attention to detail gives Elkin Beauce crit win

This week seems to be a rough week for criteriums in North America. Weather complicated the opening criterium of the Nature Valley Grand Prix on Wednesday. At the Tour de Beauce today, the protocol for the criterium was the centre of the issue - specifically for the finish with a breakaway group up a lap on the field.
Unlike in the United States of America, where the field and break can reintegrate, the rest of the world approaches it treating the two groups as still separate. The organization briefed the managers before the race that in this case the peloton would sprint with two laps to go, allowing the break to then have two laps on their own to decide the overall winner.
But confusion ensued between the lap cards and the bell signaling one lap to go. Evan Elkin (Jittery Joe's) kept his wits about him, remembering what his director had told him and keeping the laps in his head, sprinting two laps later for the solo win.
"We knew the rules before hand - our director was really clear with us, that if the break lapped the field they would sprint and we would have two laps," Elkin told Cyclingnews. "I thought it was really clear because we did two laps after that."

Elkin admitted that there was some confusion with taking a lap, but that by keeping the count in his head he was able to sprint on the correct lap. "It can be confusing because a rider in the break can be caught in the field," he said. "It's a huge field and guys in the break were just scurrying around the outside. I managed to find a hole pretty easily."
Elkin made sure he was near the front when the peloton sprinted, and went with an impromptu move on the tail end of it. "The last two laps there were a couple of guys in the break that were near the field's sprint, so I just made sure I was up there, and we just kept going," he added.
Irish champion David O'Loughlin (Pezula) was clearly upset after the race, pointing out that while the officials rang the bell for the peloton to signal one lap to go, the break never got a bell ring. The lap cards were not consistent with the official's car at the front of the race, according to O'Loughlin. "Evan sprinted with the main bunch I think, so he had a gap on us already," said the Irishman. "It was confusing, I went through and it was two laps on the board and no bell. I presumed there would be another lap, until we came around and I saw the flag."
Team Type 1 was also upset with Aussie Matt Wilson one of the strongest in the break. Director sportif Ed Beamon told Cyclingnews that the rules of this stage are confusing every year, with no consistency from year to year.
Dominique Perras (Eva-Devinci) was also a strong rider in the break, saying that Wilson and O'Loughlin almost got away about half-way through the race. "It was going pretty hard and then with 20 laps to go Matt Wilson and O'Loughlin hit it really hard up the hill, and I missed it because I was behind another rider," he said.

Elkin did make that move, but was not able to go with the two moments later when they attacked again. "That was hard," admitted Elkin. "I went with them but then they hit it again up the hill and I popped. For a second it was [a concern] but then I saw six guys working hard behind so I was confident we would bring it back."
Further complicating the race was a crash in the peloton as the break took its lap. "We lapped the field and it was chaos, because there was a huge crash," said Perras. "Then with two laps to go for the field it was four for us, but I was caught behind [the field.] Then it was apparently one lap to go [for us] but they didn't ring the bell.

"O'Loughlin was the fastest in the group, I am sure of that," he added. "I
am not a great sprinter but I can hold a wheel. I was hoping to mark him but
I guess he was confused too."
But everyone watched as Elkin added up the laps in his head and took off for
the win. "The guys in the break knew what was going on because they all came
and congratulated me," he said.
Back in the field Symmetrics had a pretty easy time, with no dangerous riders in the main break. "That was probably the easiest Beauce crit I've done in my life," said race leader Svein Tuft. "There was a little panic early on with Colex and Chadwick going off the front but we just remained calm and roll it back. It was sweet how it worked out because the guys didn't have to do too much work."
"We wanted them to take a lap so they would pull us early," he added. "We need to save everything we've got."
Indeed, as the next two stages are two tough circuit courses - first in Saint-Georges and then finishing Sunday in Ville de Québec.
