23rd Tour de Beauce - 2.2Canada, June 10-15, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - June 11: Vallée-Jonction / Vallée-Jonction, 166kmMetlushenko leaves field behind in sprint, Tecos-Trek in controlBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Vallée-Jonction, Québec Yuri Metlushenko (Amore & Vita-McDonalds) already showed the North American field that he is a fast sprinter, taking out the first race of Philly week in Allentown by sprinting solo around the entire pack. The win was important for the European team as their bike sponsor and second sponsor are both based in the U.S. Coming into the Tour de Beauce the team was hoping to continue its good fortune, and Metlushenko did just that personally in the second stage, jumping out of the field sprint in the final 300 meters so quickly it seemed the rest of the riders were stuck in their small rings. "The win in Allentown was a blessing and this is icing on the cake," a clearly excited Metlushenko said after yelling all the way across the line. "Fifteen times I found myself in front and fifteen times I found myself in back! But the team managed to always bring me to the front. With 300 metres to go I just went." "This win was important for the team for morale," the Ukranian told Cyclingnews, explaining that the death of team-mate Valentino Fois in March put a damper on the team's spring. "We lost a team-mate earlier in the year. He was a good friend, so it was very tough for all the team. This is perfect as we are coming back on form - the team is starting to show its colours!" Team-mate Phil Cortes, a native Canadian, was able to inform his sprinter about the tough run-in to the finish line - a hard left turn into a downhill followed by a rough level crossing and hard right turn, all within 100 meters and just inside of 1km to go. "Being Canadian I told him about the tracks in the last kilometre so he had a good briefing," said Cortes. The field sprint was a result of the Tecos-Trek team of race leader Bernardo Colex controlling the day, not wanting to let any attacks stay away to insure the yellow jersey stays with the team another day before the all-important queen stage, finishing on top of Mont Mégantic. Last year's winner in this stage and atop Québec's highest point, Glen Chadwick (Team Type 1), was rather quiet today. "I was just hiding from the camera, I'm just camera shy!" the Cyclingnews diarist joked. "No, there wasn't much for me to do today. We just looked after ourselves and not do any solo attacking. Sometimes the field would split but that would only get rid of the guys who are not even in contention. We asked a few other teams if they wanted to keep it hard and nobody wanted to." Chadwick said the Tecos-Trek team was clearly trying to keep the jersey for at least another day before tomorrow's difficult stage. "People were attacking and Tecos was asking, 'Why not just wait and race tomorrow?' Why not race today? I guess they are a bit worried about tomorrow and they controlled it all the way to the finish line." When asked about his chances for a repeat performance, Chadwick kept his cards close to the vest. "Tomorrow is definitely a tough stage but we'll see how it goes." Tecos-Trek's director sportif Amaro Negrete said that the team did just want to control things today in looking ahead to tomorrow. He said two riders were dedicated to keeping things under control today. "Florencio Ramos Torres and Omar Cerventes Diaz were the two workers today," he said. The team's assistant director John Gohl said they brought a climbing-focused team to Beauce. "They are climbers so they are really excited," he told Cyclingnews. "Tomorrow the key with be to control it and set Colex up for the climb. We'll try to get at least one of the guys to help Colex in the first part of the climb and then let him do his thing." The most aggressive rider of the day was an easy choice. Young Frenchman Sébastien Fournet-Fayard (A-Style/Stomn) just did not like riding in a pack, as he attacked early and rode solo for about 60km before being caught - then attacked again in the final 20km and lasted until 1.5km to go with Pezula's Martyn Irvine. "I was tired, sure, but I felt strong today," he said. "My director said to ride the front and after I saw 20km to the finish I attacked. I just could not last the final 1.5km to the finish." Tomorrow's stage is a 153km point-to-point race with tough KOM climbs before the big finale - a tough and at times very steep climb up to Mont Mégantic.
