Giro d'Italia Femminile - 2.1 (W)Italy, July 5-13, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Stage 8 - July 13: Desio - Desio, 118.5 kmTeutenberg makes it fourColumbia super-sprinter dominates once more; Luperini takes fifth GiroBy Ben Atkins in Desio Ina Teutenberg (Columbia) has taken her fourth victory of this year's Giro d'Italia, making it a clean sweep of the flat stages for the German. Teutenberg's Columbia team had to work hard to setup the sprint for the German, with the squad forced to chase down an attack from Zulfia Zabirova (Bigla) and Julia Martisova (Gauss RDZ Ormu) - the champions of Kazakh and Russia respectively - in the closing stages. Despite the best efforts of the Kazakh powerhouse in the final two of seven laps, Teutenberg's Columbia team once again delivered her to the line, where once again she was unbeatable. Second and third places were taken by Kirsten Wild (AA Drink) and Giorgia Bronzini (Titanedi Freza Acca Due O) as they had done in the early stages of the race. Fourth was Grete Treier (Gauss RDZ Ormu) and fifth was a visibly disappointed Monica Holler (Bigla). "Oh yeah, Zula's always hard to get in a break; I mean she doesn't slow down," laughed Teutenberg. "So it was quite hard work from the girls to get her." Despite the strength of Zabirova though, there was never any serious doubt in Teutenberg's mind that they would be caught. "They were gradually closing it down and we weren't really losing anybody, so I was pretty confident they would get her." Teutenberg denied any thought that her rivals were getting nearer to beating her, but despite currently being in such a rich vein of form, the German refused to accept that she was unbeatable. "I had more than a bike length," she said. "I don't consider it close. I've just had a good week, Kirsten Wild and [Giorgia] Bronzini have beaten me often enough so it's not like I always go to bike races and beat them. "I guess I did have three victories under my belt so the confidence is probably higher than theirs, and they're under more pressure than me," she added. "So it makes a difference there in the end." With Columbia only stepping in as sponsor at the beginning of this week, it has seen wins from Teutenberg in the Giro d'Italia, Cavendish in the Tour de France, as well as Kirchen in the maiilot jaune), and with Griepel in the Tour of Austria. "We've done quite some victories since we wear this jersey, so that's pretty good. We'll see what the boys do today," she laughed. "It was fast!" said Wild. "The whole day was really, really fast! After 50km I thought it's only sprinting today, and the final was really fast - for me it was good. "We have a small team here," added the Omloop Het Volk winner. "So we said we'd look what is happening and if there's a possibility to attack we do our own thing. "I chose the wheel of Ina - and I stayed in the wheel!" she joked on her inability to come around the Columbia rider. With Zabirova so strong, there were some doubts in the Dutchwoman's mind about whether the Columbia team might not bring her back in time - in contrast to Teutenberg - but the power of the chase assured her that eventually they would. "I thought maybe they don't make it," she said. "But they [Columbia] were going really fast and I thought the front group could not go that fast, so they would make it." Third placed Bronzini had a fast finish, but found herself hampered by technical issues in the final stages. "My sprint was very [good]," she said. "But my bike - my bars have slipped and the [gears] don't work well, so when I go to the sprint: one down, one up, one down, one up, and so it was difficult today!" Despite this, the World Championship bronze medallist was pleased with her result, only losing to such powerful women as Teutenberg and Wild. "I am happy," she said. "Because the two sprinters in front of me are very strong." How it unfoldedThe peloton had arrived at the 13 km finishing circuit all together, but the remaining seven laps saw a number of attacks from riders like Marta Vilajosana Andreu (Cmax Dila) - who was joined by Charlotte Becker (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung), Judith Arndt (Columbia), Andrea Thürig (Bigla) and Silvia Valsecchi (Menikini-Selle Italia-Master Colors) - and from Linda Villumsen (Columbia), Grete Treier and Giorgia Bronzini. It wasn't until the penultimate lap though, when Zabirova and Martisova escaped the fast moving peloton than anyone looked like staying away and foiling the sprinters - the gap reached a maximum of around 41 seconds before the mostly-Columbia led peloton began to pull them back. "It was an attack, but it was taken," said Zabirova. "Judith Arndt, she is a good worker for Ina Teutenberg. "I was feeling good," she added. "But the other girl [Martisova] did not work so much. I work too much and maybe it was too early; too early an attack for me." Despite the disappointment of being denied a trademark breakaway victory, the Kazakh champion was philosophical and optimistic about the fact that she was feeling so good just a few weeks before the Beijing games. Zabirova she will represent her country in both the time trial and road race. "It's no problem," she said. "It's important to feel good before the Olympics." One member of that Columbia team, charged with the task of reeling in the flying Kazakh, was former Australian World points race champion Kate Bates. "Oh good Lord!" she said. "I went with her when she first attacked and it was absolutely everything I had just too even hold her wheel, my God! "I even had to take risks through corners because you give her half a length and you never get back on," she added. "We worked together for a little while and then she attacked again, and I'm afraid on the last day I didn't have it in me to stay with her so it meant a bit of hard work for the team because we then had to get her back again." Bates' sister Natalie - while not involved at the front of the race in the closing stages today - once again found herself a member of a successful Tour-winning Menikini-Selle Italia-Master Colors team after Susanne Ljungskog's victory in the Tour de l'Aude in May. "What a year, hey!" said the Commonwealth champion. "I never would have thought this at the start, it's very good to be a part of. "There's some really good leaders I think," she added, on the secret of the team's success. "The team coming together after these girls being able to work their magic, then being able to support them. You really need someone like that in the first place, it's been a really good environment and being able to control the races when they had that GC lead and it's been very, very satisfying." Italian Champion Fabiana Luperini (Menikini-Selle Italia-Master Colors) wins her fifth Giro - 10 years after the last of her four consecutive victories - by a final margin of 2' 37" over American Amber Neben (Flexpoint) and 2' 40" over Claudia Hausler (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung). Teutenberg's four stage victories gave her a comfortable win in the points competition, Luperini herself won the mountain's jersey and Hausler won the white jersey for young riders.
